There is a book titled "Empire's Workshop" which details the unconscionable campaign by the USA to exert control over Central and South America by any means necessary, including the training and financing of death squads that would massacre entire villages if they were in favor of terrible things like labor unions. Even JFK was guilty of this, as Chomsky said here, and Ronald Reagan was probably the worst of all. The details in this book will make any decent person throw up in sheer disgust at what this country has done to its southern neighbors and continues to do around the world, all to maximize profits for the one percent who actually run things.

Today's climate is incredibly polarized in terms of politics, everything is either far-right, far-left this and that. If one expresses a worry or deals with a certain issue then they are most likely going to be thrown into a certain ideology/side and then have to deal with everything that side stands for, it's very extreme. Words are beginning to lose their meaning because of the irresponsible usage of it.

You're not wrong. Chomsky doesn't wear his atheism on his sleeve like certain other public intellectuals but he's always been open about it when asked. The best answer I ever heard him give, when asked whether he was an atheist, was to claim that he couldn't properly call himself one 'because it is not at all clear what I'm being asked to deny.' I don't think you can get any clearer than that.

I find it interesting that Chomsky opened with the attack on Jesuit priests on a Salvadoran university. My parents met on that very university (simply called "Central American University", plus the name of a historical Salvadoran figure) and were going through their studies back when the attack happened. They personally knew some of the priests, all of which were among the foremost intellectuals on the country. They were killed along with the housemaid and her daughter, who was also a student at the college (probably on scholarship, as this university has relatively expensive tuition fees and ranks as the best in the country) and completely unrelated to the "crime" the priests had committed - standing against oppression of the common people by the greedy oligarchy. I graduated from that very same university earlier this year, and it still shows its legacy through the promotion of social activism and understanding, though I do regret not being able to meet the priests in question, whose loss was certainly felt during the rebuild of the country following the end of the civil war.

Those movements were so marginal, particularly in South America. They were used by the Occidental powers and internal establishments as an excuse to suppress social justice causes and development. Mostly they repress groups that had little or nothing to do with communism... Por example, a disproportional number of union representatives were murdered or disappeared. There was never a chance for communism to get hold in Latin America. Even documents from American embassies confirm this, very early in, for example, the Argentinean coup. Those documents show how surprised officials were of the little resistance subversive forces put against the dictators.

He can remember anything on any Ford engine and how it works and is a very good mechanic as a result. I thought Chomsky's short treatise on Christianity as coopted by the state and the oppresses of mankind until the advent of Liberation Theology with its bloody demise was instructional, informative, and lucid. The problem is that Chomsky has the balls to speak with authority on issues he couldn't possibly know about, i.e. he didn't witness anything he talks about first hand. Most people have a sense of humility and refrain from talking about things so absolutely. And he has no wisdom. He ties everything into the same fictional story: "the poor are virtuous and abused, and the rich are evil and abusive." It's an appealing story, particularly for young, dumb people with no idea of what to do with themselves. Meanwhile, Chomsky is worth millions. He has a great business model.

I see “Christianity”’ more as an evolutionary process and that’s why we have sooooooooooo many different denominations (and non denominations) now. Each and every believer with their own beliefs. We know that from the beginning there were a few different denominations such as the gnostic sects with gospels like Thomas and more open sects that would become the orthodoxy churches like the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox etc. But from there, there were events like the First Council of Nicaea, Council of Chalcedon, (First, Second and Third) Council of Constantinople where theological questions such as “if there is only one God, then is Jesus a god?” It was a clumsy way to figure things out and you think an all powerful being could clarify what he meant! And then you have the likes of Martin Luther (not as Monty Python portrays him) and John Calvin breaking from the dominating Roman Catholic in Europe in and around the 1500s. Al, saying “wait one moment”...but in German and French respectively. From them, you have a schism of everyone making their own churches like Protestants, Church of England, Quakers, etc. Then in the early 1800s you have the Second Great Awakening with the Adventist, Mormons and others in the Americas. Which I agree with you, is evangelical nonsense. Now we have your liberation theology...it’s your belief and I’d never tell you what you think. But I will say this; everyone thinks they know God, a god, or gods and yet there is zero credible evidence for anything supernatural and that’s why I ridicule Christianity. It’s all in people’s heads. Ask the Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Catholic, or any of the 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of denominations and the millions and millions of nondenominational Christians, and they will tell you they have the capital “T” TRUTH and it is all different! But in fairness, I do understand why people reach beliefs; culture, communal pressures, confirmation biases, psychology, brain chemistry, and do I dare say “logic”? etc, etc...so you go on believing liberation theology is best and mock all the others. In the end, I’m just mocking one more denominations than you; and it’s yours. Stay safe my friend.

A hallmark of true Christianity is the doctrine of individual sin. Jesus had plenty of opportunities to condemn systemic evil - such as the all-encompassing systemic evil of the Roman Empire - but he did not. Jesus condemned personal wrongdoing, such as pride, greed, unbelief. Confessing personal sin is the gateway in Christian theology to grace.

Constantine put a stop to 20,000 Gnostics in Rome killing and quarreling with one another, and the Movement died as all things do under the yoke of orthodoxy. What exists today as 'Christianity' in the pineal few Christians know anything about is anyone's guess.

Christianity began at a time of great illiteracy and ignorance; where record keeping was not a priority. It’s why scholarly efforts, at best, can date the gospel of Mark to @70 C.E.....which then was based on oral traditions like “Q”....decades after the alleged Jesus lived. But yes, many Christians are unaware of how their own beliefs came into existence. And there are cultural, epistemological, psychological (such as confirmation biases and brain chemistry), and dare I say, logical reasons why people have these beliefs....so I try not be to cynical about it. But fir me, religious beliefs fall apart when you look at them objectively. Cheers

Nicholas Dickens in my opinion the real tradition of Protestantism (Luther and Calvin) if taken seriously rest on several ideas. 1) individuals have moral responsibility 2) forgiving others (debts or sins) and asking for forgiveness from others and God 3) the idea that no man has authority over another man 4) that there is a greater moral intelligence, that is greater than yourself which every individual has access to. Cults can emerge and if you look at the work of psychologists Robert Jay Lifton you can see how cults work. Christian Cult like religions like many evangelical churches are about the individual surrendering their executive functions and moral reasoning to the group not to a “higher power” so it goes against both Luther and Calvin. In the early 20th century religious literalism was on its way out. Reading Joseph Campbell he described the 1920’s as being very secular and atheist. He expresses what I've been thinking since I was eighteen and I'm sixty four now. I was walking from my college campus to the bus stop on the way back home and some hippie guy got in conversation with me (Delhi, India, 1974). I mentioned radical revolution and Marxism and he said Jesus was the first world beating radical revolutionary of the poor and downtrodden and proposed a revolution based in God instead of without God such as Marx proposed. It immediately struck me how a Christian revolutionary socialism could overturn the empire of the oppressed, perhaps through Gandhian passive resistance and sabotage rather then violent revolution. If the military forces could be persuaded to turn on the elites. Persuasion could ultimately prove more powerful and enduring then force. Of course that never got tried. Socialist revolution following Lenin committed to violent takeoves and forcible changes and ultimately failed. In many places it was opposed precisely because it opposed God, such as in South Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. If following Chomsky the Christian leadership had indeed organised preferentially for the poor and the suffering, outlasting the U.S. crackdown via regional forces of statist coersion, Jesus might have become a force for positive political change and countered the world elitist hegemony that appears to be increasingly dominant and organised today.

One cannot love someone and simultaneously believe they deserve to be tortured forever. They ignore it because they recognize the ridiculous nature of a such a maxim "Do not resist evil." To submit to evil is to aid it, and therefore be responsible in part.

You just have understood the Bible a bit wrongly. The Bible says you can't judge no other, for you are human and you are as sinner as them, so you just can and have to follow Christ's first commandment: LOVE each other as He loved us. We are born with a sin than inhibits us to reach the Glory of God, so we can't go to heaven. Only through believing in Jesus death and resurrection by the power of the Father is that we can be saved. Therefore christianity, if practised to it's core, is a religion of love, empathy and humility. And the Word of God doesn't says you have to hate being in this world😆just says that you don't need to pursuit mundane treasures, for you are dust and you and everything in this world will returnt to dust, so it's better to make you treasures in heaven. 🤍🙌
