Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, political commentator, social justice activist, and anarcho-syndicalist advocate. Sometimes described as the "father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy. He has spent most of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is currently Professor Emeritus, and has authored over 100 books. He has been described as a prominent cultural figure, and was voted the "world's top public intellectual" in a 2005 poll.
This talk was recorded in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 14, 1997.

Impressive. Chomsky, not being a catholic, is teaching Catholics to better honor the legacy of some of the best of their own priests. We, as humans, from many regions, backgrounds, religions, or cultures, are really fortunate to have his words to educate and inspire ourselves.

Responsibility of intellectuals is personified by Sanders, who displayed a brand of courage, like no others. Pointing out reforms that might need more time than he has. Yet he does not shy away to emphasize regulated capitalism (business, banking etc,) need for democratic socialism, equitable distribution of wealth (that eluded mankind since Sumeria), and the naked truth of our extinction, if climate change issue is ignored.

Please, allow the automatic generation of closed captions. That would make it more accessible for those whose English is not their native language.

I wonder if Chomsky can be rightly seen as a "major figure in analytic philosophy." He seems to identify with a Cartesian, which would imply a rationalist standpoint rather than the empiricism of analytic philosophy.

You can easily find a copy of the Churchhill text online I beileve. Pete Seeger mentioned a news article Churchhill wrote in the Fall of 1920 in Harold Sunday Newspaper worth reading the Title is Zionism it refers to his thoughts upon the recent rise of Russia under Lenin. He cites Webster Nester as a source and her book Revoultion she was a supporter of Hitler later.

5:20 This was true in Chomsky's time, it is no longer so. Class, defined by wealth and influence is strongly correlated with education quality. I don't believe that Chomsky would dispute this today, so think of this as a sort of update on facts.

So, I just finished this lecture and realised I am screwed. Noam Chomsky basically said, there's no room for truth tellers in the democratic systems we have cultivated until 2022. Old Fairies Help Us. Love you Mr Chomsky!

Slightly odd and melodramatic conclusion to draw (with due respect). I'd suggest assessing Chomsky's views/positions for yourself, and then form an independent conclusion

Great lecture, but correction : slavery is alive and well, human trafficking and sweat shop labor . Trafficking is organized child and adult rape. I understand he speaks on specific form . But slavery in its most heinous form is all pervasive .

He may have many merits but nobody could be called "father of modern linguistics" without starting to study the Real Science of Linguistics which start with Petro Zheji work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petro_Zheji ...those who are interested to learn the truth... which N. Chomsky advice... should start learning Albanian history and language!
@gamerknown

Phrase structure branches started with Chomsky in 1957 and are still utilised by linguists, whereas I don't believe Zheji's work has gained much purchase (as elucidating as it may be).

@@gamerknown , "Modern" Civilizations want to give importance to pseudo-intellectuals and hidden ancient civilizations are cover up with strong Censorship! So, they hurt or frighten any Academic who does study in Albanian history and linguistics. For instance, check out what happens to the Croatian Academic Milan Sufflay: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan_%C5%A0ufflay

So you think Petro should be the Father of Modern Linguistics because Petro studied the Albanian language? Okay. So what? Albanian is one language in the entire field of Linguistics.

The essence of Hegelian dialectics is hierarchical, emphasizing what modern American ideal of exclusiveness (benefactor per excellence) and Russel and Chomsky's label of 'terrorist of the world', is universal. When we eat vegetable,gray part of the brain, increasing our intelligence, yet on we eat good food values and toxins unavoidably, when we eat meat we increase our intelligence, but also endanger our lives with the threat of heart attacks or liver or kidney problems. American support for Israel (which act as their mercenaries) is not without reason. If we aspire to achieve globalization (which is indispensable) we need free market economy, cultural uniformity and unanimity. Israel is the scapegoat for America to establish modern beliefs and values, even among the diverse shades of Christianity, Islam, and other cultures (even though the Jews themselves need change) in line with the unwritten code of the 'leader of evolutionary change, called the alpha male [or female]', according to the universal knowledge of DIALECTICS, that made Marx the most read intellectual in history, and what Sanders' Doctrine of regulated capitalism (banking, business, social security etc.). equitable distribution of wealth, that eluded humanity since Sumeria, along with awareness of climate change (ignored by most) provides the responsibility.
