In Sweden it ended up as "den svenska lutan" . A lute-shaped flat-back ( or half-flat) instrument with free "teorb"-like bass-strings. Or just lute-shaped guitars, this actual instrument in it´s original set up could of course be called "lute-guitar" , but the shape+doublestrings makes it a "cittern" for me. Carl Michael Bellman (1700 singer/poet) played a small version he called "cittrinchen". Other members of the "family" is of course "english guitar" , "german guitar", "waldzither" .

The Cd is "Pipmakarns polska" by Faust/ Åkerlund. When I found this instrument it had three single bass-strings and three double top-strings. I added one string to make it to five pairs instead. With small or big variations, instrument of the cister/cittern-family seem to have been played and quite popular in Sweden at least since 1700- . It seems to be an instrument that never kept a standard form for a longer period but changing .

Hello, my cittern is an old vintage instrument. Probably Swedish or German made around 1900-1920 ( my guess) . The scale length is about a "normal guitar" , tuning from the base : DGdad , her with capo on the first fret.

I play quite improvised patterns and don´t use sheet music for this kind of playing. But if you use the same tuning, watch this , and listen to the CD I am sure you can figure it out. Good luck !

Both tunes are traditional tunes from Dalsland in Sweden. The first one has words to it and is called ”Ola och Anna”. We recorded this set on the album ”Pipmakarns polska” (with lots of music from the same area)

In different sizes and a bit different number of strings, still about the same idea, some of them more lute-like , mandolin-like or guitar-like....
