A thought-provoking talk by technology ethicist Tristan Harris, on the race between technology creators and our regulation on AI and our ever-increasing addiction to social media. Harris proposes that when we are creating this technology, we need to look further than blaming big tech on providing platforms for disinformation but balance the power of creation of technologies with our responsibility to govern and understand it.

While I‘m not as pessimistic, I‘d like to add that we need to reevaluate the so far useful construct of capitalism that helped us overcome hardship and other obstacles. I absolutely love and resonate with your opening statement. I am an AI scientist and humanist and environmentalist and spiritual being. For me, it has been important to integrate all of these aspects of myself in a healthy ethics-centered way. I don't believe that these parts of ourselves are unbridgeable if we engage wisdom in how we address them within ourselves and in a connected way with others. But, we need to work hard to develop our atrophied wisdom muscles. Towards that end, for myself, I've become an ICF coach. And I've conducted wisdom circles and listening sessions as well as engaged in personal and organizational coaching and conservation work along with AI research to grow my wisdom along with those I work with in all those activities. We all have a responsibility to meditate on what challenges us, work to understand others, and put humanity and the planet before our egos and fears. And work towards developing our wisdom from a place of understanding, compassion, awareness, and love.

A common refrain in institutions towards early adopters is 'deal with your people (cultural) issues before adopting tools to confront issues.' institutions are not the most dynamic adopters because each technology requires a new data reframing in a way that effectively constitutes paradigm shift for those used to institutional adoption pace. Progress is a myth. This talk represents a palatable presentation of the inevitable control mechanisms that will only serve to dehumanize further. It all truly sounds great, but the questions we pose must be deeper. What is progress and should we be pursuing these things at all?

I think it’s a good talk, in particular with respects the challenges that social media has created. I got interested when he started with the human brain context, but didn’t get to really embraced that challenge in the talk. He highlighted effectively that we abuse our brain with negative reinforcements with AI, but not how we can turn that into an advantage. The brain has an uncanny ability to rise to a challenge and overcome ‘suffering’. It’s how we learn. Like the body, society can organise itself towards a complex goal or state, take moonshots for example; ie going to the moon. Problem is, there seems to be a tendency of capitalism to think that fear makes more money. Fear of missing out, fear of hacking, fear of losing money, name it. The component of control and regulation is challenging. Genie is out of the box so to say. Not only that any one anywhere can build it to some extent. It’s not like the construction of a nuclear bomb that we could to some extent control. Digital tech by its nature drives scale, not productivity. He is right that it will grow beyond our ability to grasp it. While we should try to control and minimise negative impact, it’s rise will be inevitable. And since it’s learning from our ‘first contact’, it knows we crave fear….Not how we can turn that around, but should try nonetheless

The opening quote from E O Wilson is stunning and elegant at the same time. Mr. Harris earnestly weaved the idea that we need to mediate our past with our present in order to navigate our increasing technological future. The "cultural climate change" is great term for the strange tides of the past few years, especially of the tribalism influenced by media. If anything I've witnessed more and more people become less and less like themselves. I believe that EO Wilson, while being able to frame the problem with such few words, he also has a similar pattern of simplicity to address the solution. That is.... Go outside.... Well he kind of wrote the book on going outside "Biophilia", which pulled at the heart strings of other talented individuals that stirred into the "Biophilic Hypothesis". Creating a consilience, if you will, of brilliant minds across the globe to try and address the issue of the genetic component of why a natural environment has such a profound positive impact on people. With a quick google search of " the average time people spend indoors" what you find is a staggering amount of 90%. But what is more alarming is that the first site that appears for me is a statistic for air quality not anything to do with environmental psychology/ wellness etc. If our paleolithic emotions and brains are dependent on getting some good quality outdoor time and we as humans are spending over 90% of our time indoors, than shouldn't we go outside more and take a friend or two?

I’ve always thought that these social media ideas, strategies, executions, etc. they r not some difficult things to come up with. All these educated people who study and research a lot already know about how to get general public interests in certain things. The academic people don’t put these crazy addictive idea in execution or into business models because they know that it’s not gonna be a good idea for civilization. Academic people know what’s good and bad-it’s the moral self judgement already knows that what should be publicized or not to the general public population. Different universities have different teaching standard and mentality. Such as Harvard has a good reputation because they way classes are taught aren’t just for knowledge per se, it’s also about raising a group of the future leaders who are going to do good to the world instead of coming up ideas to benefit themselves and get rich. Picking good colleges are to learn the values they pass on to the kids. What kids can learn and pass on to the world. Not just for the dollar sign sake.

Tristan's Non profit is a nice start. Our gut biome is severely affected by our poor soils etc. Teaching kids and families why and how the Asians made Kimchi and fermented foods is EXTREMELY vital to sustaining life on earth. Our gut biome affects our thinking , emotions and behavior and it is vitally important to keep it active. Sauerkraut is the highest food with Vit. C in it than any citrus fruit also...... With that said, his team needs to put their money where their mouth is. Literally, instead of paying people a salary at this Non -profit, buy a farm.or land and invite young people and their kids to live there in a tiny home for a week. It will be a 'check your cell phone here.....' type of thing .Showing them that they will still live without the phone will build security and confidence. It is not a huge amount of money. Elon Musk has already begun this by getting us off the grid, stopping depending upon oil to fuel all cars and trucks. Solar is the first choice right now.

I admire the talk, but the proposed solutions are insufficient. The problem existed long before social media. The example of the Mac Interface shows a clear misunderstanding of the root cause. It is what I call the "channeling of desire" by marketing which is more like a huge brainwashing machine. We have certain desires, e.g., togetherness, love, affirmation, and working on our projects and advertisements channels these desires into consumption. First, we have to educate ourselves about our desires (even the "bad" ones). Secondly, we have to build public/communal spaces (free from profit incentives) where we can satisfy these desires. This, however, will never happen because our economic system depends on mass consumption (be it physical or digital products) and such a world would be pretty dangerous for the ruling class because people would probably share a common consciousness about their struggle.

Here is the problem, their theory of society is wrong. Everyone’s underlying assumption is functionalist. They’re asking, how we get the new technologies to be ‘aligned’ with humanity? Or how we get our brains and institutions to match the speed and complexity of the evolutionary curve technology? The implicit goal is to functionally integrate, or match, the structures of society with new reality. They hope to restore social trust, and social fabric into a state of harmony. Except that trust and harmony has never existed. And this goal is naive idealism. The more realistic assumption, is to see society as conflict. Antagonism will occur where power relations are unequal. In turn, systems of domination are experienced as cleavages of conflict and disintegration. Technology, far from being neutral, is a system of power, it creates and amplifies inequalities. The task is to reveal how knowledge and technology are used for domination, subjugation and control. You ask, where is injustice, and who is being harmed? How is it justified or concealed? The struggle, is to reveal, how technology is used to concentrate power with particular groups, mediate values, and distort goals. Here, the alignment problem is the match of institutions and material resources with the dominant, or hegemonic, ideas and values. They need to be misaligned, and unmatched, only then can they be liberated, and ultimately remade.

I used to work in the AI arm of one of the biggest tech companies in the world. I have given talks on AI and creativity. I do not agree with his nor most people’s ‘doomsday’ picture of AI, social media, and technology. Or to be more precise, I would add, “Yes, sure, ok AND…” I am tired of the negative loops repeating (and thus reinforcing) the negative impact of these tools. Their powers need to be acknowledged, yes, but I also believe in human beings, and their ability to rediscover their true selves, find soul purpose, and to reach toward SQ -spiritual intelligence-(as the next stage of human evolution after IQ and EQ). Talks like this that promote the “dangers” of AI hugely underestimate the power of human beings, and demonstrate little hope in them. I believe these kinds of ideas (that spend disproportionate time and energy on identifying the ills) often do more harm than good, and create a negative climate of fear that engulfs human’s attitudes towards AI and technology, instead of accepting the reality of what has been created, and looking at possibility. In other words, it is a spirit of fear that is enabled, ironically, rather than a spirit of creation, which can create beauty out of dung. AI and social media and technology has *also* been used to give platforms to people without voices, share ideas and relate across cultures, improve the lives of the disabled (i.e. my son who relies on an iPad to speak) and help introverts find communities, help artists, dancers, comedians, singers, everyday people share their lives and talents and have their gifts affirmed, who would have never had this platform decades ago, it has equalized access to information and dissemination, and allow humans to connect with others around the world. I will never deny the negative effects it has also had. But to ignore how technology has improved human lives would be too easy. The truth is that all these things are tools, and now we have bigger and stronger and faster tools (but side note: machines are also incredibly dumb in ways people don’t seem to enjoy discussing these days as much as they’d rather peddle fear) - we have just been given an even greater responsibility as humans now to figure the best way forward.

Good comment! You say that the speaker emphasizes the negativity and unhopefulness about how technology will be our doom as opposed to the inspiration and hopefulness about the ways technology can help us spiritually evolve and how it has already helped us. Maybe negativity is more addictive... But I think it is also very necessary. We do need to change our institutions and that is something we can do right now. Changes in the way we organize our society is, at least at this point in time, more crucial than any inspiring message. Contradicting what I just said, remember that the reason Harris is speaking is because he believes people are willing to listen and change their mind and expand their scope of concern.

This is a great and insightful talk, but it is also quite ironic that he is also embracing or hinting at some of the biases/misinformation out there, such as using the example of Wuhan Insititute of virology to state that biosafety level 4 capabilities should come with biosafety level 4 safety practices, which just reminds the audience of the 'virus leak from Wuhan laboratory' claim that was never actually made official or proved. He didn't refer to the claim directly, but it still has a negative effect when this claim is also part of the 'fun house mirror' media he's talking about - it captures attention, it's 'extreme', and it gets spread all over the world's movie screen.

I disagree with the solution. Or at least, partially. Yes we need to match the complexity of the world with the complexity of our institutions, but institutions are made out of people. And to match institution to technology means becoming smarter people. There is no other way than learning to think for yourself. Individual emancipation is the only way out of an exponential increase in automotive processes.

This. There are a bunch of us in this thread who appear to be on the same page regarding humanity. There's nothing mystical about technology. @@alexcaminiti There is certainly nothing mystical about AI, but modern AI is _not_ programmed by humans. Neural networks are generated, not written. We can look directly at the internal weights and still have no idea why an AI behaves the way it does. They are black boxes. Worse than that, when we give such a system a goal, a set of unsolved problems (collectively called the Alignment Problem) cause the AI to pursue a goal that is either a misinterpretation of the intended goal, or is even completely unrelated. The more powerful these systems become, the more likely it becomes that someday some of them will do very, very bad things.

@@41-Haiku They can't self replicate. They can't reproduce. They can't make people provide them with the energy they need to answer questions we ask, or perform tasks we want them to do. I have a difficult time believing AI poses even close to as big of a threat to humanity as first world humans. The alignment problem with neural networks is just another form of blowback we will have to face. I don't believe we only get one shot. Maybe we do, maybe we don't. Maybe we'll all die, maybe we won't. Humans and all life are made of water and require water to live. I don't think we should fear something that we don't understand that isn't conscious. It gives it more power from the collective consciousness than it should have. We are in charge of it, and we will decide its and our fates. My two cents.

I want to like what he is saying.. but to be honest, I think he is advocating that someone more “qualified” describe what is good for the individual or humanity as a whole, and unfortunately, that is never turns out well.. it is just optimistic elitism. You have to allow communities to define success or health for themselves. That is the only way to actual be supportive.

Excellent point. But first you need to educate those communities so they are actually able to make good decisions for themselves. It points to a foundational problem with American culture: the population has been dumbed down and consequently large numbers of people do not have the tools for critical thinking and self reflection. And let's not fool ourselves, that's not something that happened by chance.

This guy seriously just did a talk called "I'm not afraid. You're afraid" and then went onto talking about all these things he was afraid of. Here are some excerpts of some of the nonsense in this talk. 1:58 These phrases about social media being "1st contact with humanity and AI" are inaccurate. First contact with AI was from developers who used the programs directly and not through social media. Also, some of the algorithms which determined which content to show do not require using AI technology but just usual programming as opposed to machine learning techniques. 3:15 "About to go into second contact with large language models", again it would seem that "contact" has already been established and is widely in use. It's already happened. 3:49 Actually people do pay for KZbin, including myself. It's called KZbin Premium. False. 9:10 He asserts that the US dollar could be easily devalued "like that" (in a snap) by creating fake photos of people standing in front of banks? Huh? He states that there isn't any "Department of Homeland Security or patriot missile defense system that can stop someone from doing something like that". Unproven assertion. It would appear that US federal agencies do have capabilities to stop cyber threats so it isn't as if there is no defense against such things. Also people have been doing things to try and influence currency values for foreign exchange for a while and society is still functioning. Fear mongering. 9:52 A faster evolutionary pace of a virus as compared to the immune system does not necessarily result in the immune system losing. As it has been shown that the immune system can respond to new pathogens and not lose by default. Consider that the human body has more atoms than the milky way galaxy has stars. That's a whole lot of complexity when you start adding up all that up for the entire world! Obviously these do not have to match and if anything choice making and regulation should be simpler than the extraordinary complexity of the world. 10:38 Isn't using this sort of term "god-like" just reinforcing the medieval institutions rather than upgrading them? Arguably, AI isn't "god-like" because it has actually been demonstrated to exist beyond the realms of fictional literature and people's imagination. 10:55 What is meant by "embracing our Paleolithic brains"? According to this dude, "confirmation bias, the social rewards that we get, belonging" is "embracing what it means to be human". First of all, many of the social rewards around today are not innate to homo sapiens which for the majority of their time on this planet on the evolutionary scale did not require. Actually Google amongst others have actually developed AI safety practices and analysis including those for analyzing the safety of large language models. Whoah whoah. Good presentation, but at the very end you took the Wrong turn there, sir. We don't want an overruling body of self-titled intelligence aristocracy to decide and limit what we can and can't do. Greed for money is at the core of what happened with social media. We need to replace it with longing for KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, outwards-pointed CONTRIBUTION etc. We need a better social system than capitalism. And for this we need to thoroughly rewire our paleolithic brains.
