First he pissed and moaned because he didn't want to play center... then he pissed and moaned because he wanted to play more center and get more post ups. Then he pissed and moaned because he "never wanted to play center" Look... I get it. People say things when they're frustrated... but Dallas did right by Porzingis. He wasn't his old self for a couple years there. Unfortunately, Dallas was there to help him get healthy, but traded him the moment he was healthy. Just dumb. There better be a good interpersonal reason for letting him go, because as far as basketball goes, there is no justification.

Can you explain why he didn’t work in Dallas? He was injured initially, but he was healthy for some time. I think it’s due to the coach’s decision to not give KP enough calls and Luka’s inability to play off ball.
@ltmon
@ltmon Жыл бұрын
He was great in stretches, and worked well with Luka during those stretches (e.g. bubble playoffs until he got injured). But he always lost a lot of foot speed after any injuries, and had long times getting fit again where he had comparably limited mobility. Dallas sent him off because of his injury-prone history, not because of how good he can be when fully fit, nor because he and Luka didn't mesh. The extended run without major injuries last season has brought him back to that "bubble KP" fitness level by the looks of it -- I hope it lasts as he's too good a player to be confined to a limited role.

Do I call this a "stupid" comment? People think I'm abrasive but how else do I combat such a lack of understanding of the NBA game? A "championship" season is ONE HUNDRED AND TEN GAMES, not 70. You don't understand the game and you can't do math. This is why Celtic "fans" are always "disappointed" the Celts haven't won a championship lately, when they have had a team that OBVIOUSLY is not championship material.
@UnconventionalReasoning

@@qt3dot14ish Sure, call it a "stupid" comment. Or call yourself simple-minded, because you can only think of one way to see a particular situation. Yes, the Celtics need Porzingis to stay healthy throughout the playoffs. But when we talk about games played, we generally use regular season games.

@@qt3dot14ish Well that's quite a bit too far The Celtics are capable of a deep playoffs run or a championship with or without him. There are many players who are on teams with better Championship/Playoffs hopes who would be out of the playoffs without that player. Jokic, Giannis, Durant/Booker, possibly Curry, Possibly Lebron... and that's just on teams presumed to be contenders. If you move it to ANY team who's season heavily pivots on a single player, you can add Embiid, Doncic', and maybe even Wemby. Don't get me wrong, I love what Porzingis brings to the Celtics, but he's not the most important player in the league. I'll give him this though... there's some possibility that he might be more important to the Celtics' success this year than Tatum. The Celtics can replace somewhat what Tatum gives them... but what Porzingis gives the Celtics cannot be replaced... particularly on Defense.
@qt3dot14ish

@@runthenumbers9698 Without Zing the Celtics have ZERO chance at a title and with Zing they are at least co-favorites, along with Denver, and they are possibly the only team that can beat the Spurs if Wemby jells this season. The biggest functioning team wins the championship. Without Zing, we are again too small to survive the playoffs.
@runthenumbers9698
@runthenumbers9698 Жыл бұрын
@@qt3dot14ish Calm down on Wemby. LOL! I'm not hating on Wemby. He's fantastic and he's going to get better. The problem is though, he's not an Offensive engine, and the Spurs have a fairly low ceiling at the moment. Yeah, they can make the playoffs... but in 4 rounds of the top half of the league, there WILL be a team who has a way to take Wemby out of the offense. I get it... he's a unicorn, and that's a great thing to have. But when it comes down to it, the league hasn't had a chance to figure out how to make him uncomfortable... but they will. For example, the 1 4 zone seems to take Wemby out of the offense, not because Wemby sucks, but because the Spurs don't have the tools they need around him... yet. So far, the formula for Wemby is to put your worst defender on him at the 3 and overcommit, and put a 2nd small on help duty to draw the charge or force him to take a midrange or give up the ball... and then commit the small to boxing him out 15 feet from the basket to keep him off the offensive boards. And anyone that draws a double, that's a good thing for sure... but with Wemby, he still hasn't managed to make it great. You can double him with your two worst/smallest defenders, and leave him with the choice of a 3 pointer, a long-2, or giving up the ball to a teammate... and all 3 are low-efficiency options. So while Wemby can at times look utterly impossible to guard, there are schemes that stop him with relatively little help. Compare that to a guy like Luka (I know... not fair... but I';m illustrating a point). With Luka, if you put a small on him, he's going to get past him or he's going to get a clean step-back. A small isn't going to bother him 1 on 1. Let's say he draws a second small... Luka is almost better when being doubled. He'll not only find a way to get into the paint anyway and often find a way to use his body to clear enough space for a mid-range shot... which he actually IS efficient at... but he also is excellent at finding the open man in a 4 on 3, and he's arguably EVEN BETTER at finding the help defense, faking them into rotation, and passing 1 pass ahead to the man who wasn't even open yet. Luka will body smalls, dice up bigs. He REQUIRES 2 of your best 6'7" defenders to guard him, and that means, everyone else's job is super easy. The more you guard Luka. In other words, there is a threshold for Luka where if you dedicate more resources to guarding him, you make his job easier. The same is not true of Wemby, and you don't need bigs to guard Wemby. If Wemby were to become a 40% 3 pt shooter and at least get a hot spot in the midrange where he shoots 60%, that could change a lot for him, but until then, and until the Spurs get a chance to truly build around Wemby, they aren't in Ring contention.

He didn't have "the exact" role. He had the EXACT OPPOSITE ROLE (as noted in the comment by jeev). It just amazes me how people are literally clueless. With Dallas, Luka just stands at the top of the key and pounds the rock for 24 seconds. With Boston, the players are moving and cutting and the ball is rotating around the court looking for an open player. You "watch" these two teams play and you see the same thing? Yikes!
@supertenor10
@supertenor10 Жыл бұрын
@@qt3dot14ish so you really think he was told that he is not allowed to cut or set a screen?! That's just ridiculous! He wasn't satisfied with his role, because he wanted more Post-ups and didn't get them. On the other hand he was held back by his injuries. These two points led to him playing like he did. Had nothing to do with Luka. I can just advise you to look at the games from the bubble. They played very well together in that stretch. Porzingis was cutting and rolling and popping all over the place just as with the Celtics right now. But then he got hurt again... As it seems you are just one of these people who like to think Luka never shares the ball. He does when it is the best play. But with the teams he had until now more often than not it was the best and most efficient play to just do it himself.
@qt3dot14ish
@qt3dot14ish Жыл бұрын
@@supertenor10 First off, the NBA is a 100% contract driven league. Coaches have basically no input into a team's function. Luka is on a supermax contract so he is running the team. Luka sent Zing to "stand in the corner" just like LBJ does his teams and Kyrie Irving did to the Celtics players. (You can add basically any non-Steph or non-Stevens team's "superstars" to this list. And even Stevens couldn't stop Kyrie's ball hogging.) And to say Luka doesn't "share" the ball would be slightly inaccurate. With Luka, like MOST superstars, there is no team ball movement. They themselves don't move without the ball. Conversely, they just stand at the top o' the key and pound the rock. If they can get a good shot, then great. If not, they do a bail-out pass and if that player happens to score, the rock-pounder gets an "assist". That's how you jack up your pay check without risk. But that strategy marginalizes every other player on the team. Zing is in Boston now, (no rock pounders on the team) and he's playing great. Rock pounding = Luka no playoffs or early exit. Free-flow ball movement (WITHOUT A CENTER) = Celtics constantly in the ECF/Finals. That above analysis passes the eye-test, the statistical test, and the final results test. Some of these guys are SO GOOD, yet, because they don't play "true" basketball, it's virtually impossible to build a championship team around them. Luka will never win a championship because it's impossible to put a congruent championship team around such a rock-pounding player.

Man I feel like the warriors missed out trading for porzingis. They traded Poole to the wizards for cp3, but they probably could have gotten porzingis for that same price. A slight lead on one defender doesn't seem like a fast break compared to having two guys go up against one well placed defender - should not have tried it if he didn't have the lead to take the middle lane then front lay up it or switch to the side which the defender isn't going.

What's your point? Last season we had a 6.7, non-athletic, non-dynamic scorer/defender, in that role. Zing is a massive improvement even if he just stands there and does noting except be 7.3.

The way it works is that "superstars" actually suck the life out of their team. But since there are only five players per team on the court, ONE really physically dominant player can at the same time, suck the life out of the team but the team is still unbeatable because the other teams just can't compete with that one dominant player. Pozingis' style is identical to the way Stevens coached his team, and that is free-flow ball movement, everyone participates. But as we saw with Kyrie, (and every other star), the "stars" just hog the ball and take the "team movement" right out of the game. Zing, like most players, can't function while being told to stand in the corner and watch. If you're paying attention you would have noticed that EVERY SINGLE PLAYER that Stevens has brought in has been BIGGER than the player they replaced. But more to your point, Stevens is only bringing in players who's personalities are congruent to Stevens team build. With this in mind, Zing was the PERFECT acquisition for Stevens and the Celts. He will be terrific inside the Celtic's system.

What? He had no choice on "how to play". The NBA is a 100% contract driven league. In Dallas, Luka has the contract. As such he runs the team. He made Zing stand in the corner and watch just like Kyrie make Tatum/Brown/Smart/Rozier stand in the corner. That's how the game is played in the NBA. So Giannis/LBJ/Lillard/too many other to mention, all just hog the ball and drain the life out of their own team mates. How can you watch the games and not understand this? It's the business model of the NBA. It's EVERY SINGLE GAME, EVERY SINGLE SEASON. The only two "ball movement" teams in the NBA right now are the Warriors and the Celts. Every other team is a "pound the rock" superstar concentric "team" concept. Pre-NBA, a "team" player is taught to move the ball and then themselves to move without the ball. When you get to the NBA, being a "team" player means standing in the corner while your "superstar" dribbles out the clock and chucks up a last second stinker.
