Here is a southern boy tip on catching gar. Take a piece of white nylon rope, about 1/4" in diameter. Burn one end so it will not ravel. Now cut it about 6" long, but do not burn the cut end. Now comb out the nylon rope about 4" down from the burnt end. Once you have it combed out really good, take a short 12" piece of wire leader and run it through the rope just under the burn end and make a small loop and add a crimp lock, completing the loop. Now at the other end of the wire leader, add a strong swivel and a loop with a crimp lock. NO HOOK NEEDED. Tie the swivel to your line and cast it in the river, pulling it erratic thru the water. If a gar hits it, he will get his teeth hung in the combed out nylon rope and will not come off. Good luck.

Haven’t done that in years. Last time I did that with a couple of buddies, we are all very experienced anglers , but we grabbed a six pack and went down to the river. We had the same kind of a mixed bag. We filleted up those into nice sized chunks and fried them up with different dipping sauces. So we had a nice feed for 6 adults. All the wives loved the meal, and I was just dead simple like fishing when we were kids. Pearch, crappies, catfish, walleye and they were all excellent.

The secret to hooking a gar is understanding a gar. I use minnows for bait. Live or dead does not matter. When they take the minnow, it lies across their jaws. If you try to set the hook, you'll only pull the hook out of your minnow and the gar gets a free meal. You have to wait until they rise to the surface to flip the minnow around head-first and then swallow. Sometimes they will swim for a hundred yards before they'll swallow it. You will see them stick their snouts above the water. I float them towards the gar and if they take the bait and your cork goes under, give them free line until you either see them swallow the bait or the cork surfaces, and you see their snouts snapping above the water. Wait as they swim off until you can't wait anymore. Then, wait a few more seconds. And then hit them hard! Enjoy your 5-foot gar! ; )

Interesting, Spencer! I have eaten all except the White bass, it is not wide spread here in Michigan. Channel Cats are, as well as Drum (at least in the Great Lakes). Gar are wide spread, but very rarely caught. I prefer Flathead over Channels as far as catfish go, and drum is very good smoked. Have you ever eaten the Asian Bighead or Silver carp? I would think either would be excellent canned up like we do salmon and spring White and Longnose Suckers.

I noticed that you breaded with corn meal. If you want the best breading ever for anything to be fried: 3 cups flour, 3 tablespoons each of the following: black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, your favorite seasoning salt. If you want to you can also add 1 or 2 tablespoons salt. Place in a gallon plastic bag and use it to bread your fish. Try this dry batter mix and you'll love it.

Those little catfish, we called them Horned Pout in New England, are so delicate and sweet! Back in the day we'd never imagined breading and frying them. We sautéed them in a little butter, maybe a little white wine just until they turned opaque.
@wildwillie5408 Жыл бұрын
what are called horned pout in the northeast are actually bullhead catfish, at least in most cases. they don't grow nearly as big as channel, blue and flathead cats, in my home state they are considered panfish. they are a nuisance fish to many. they often overpopulate, become stunted and are even undesirable due to very small size. you'll notice the "horned pout" do not have a forked tail like the cats he is catching.

Live in Michigan. Growing up we fished smaller lakes by boat, or bank fished millponds and rivers. We would catch bass, pike, bluegill, perch, and crappie. Never cared for bass, because they tasted muddy. You might call it gamey. My favorite of the other 4 was crappie. My father wouldn't fish the bigger rivers and lakes, so we didn't get much trout, whitefish, walleye, or salmon. Those all very tasty. He wouldn't do smelt dipping either, but we had a neighbor that would share once in awhile. Nothing better than a good smelt fry. Got to try dipping when I went off to college. Had a dorm mate that was from the Upper Peninsula, and he always seemed to find the best spots. A bunch of us piled in cars and filled a few coolers. Rented the sportmans den in the dorm and had a smelt fry. The whole dorm house and everyones friends who heard about it or helped clean them ate well that night. If I remember right it was over 50 people showed up to eat. Good times. Needless to say, I enjoyed your video. And you should do more cooking sections. Suggestion for those that find your video and are inexperienced in the finer points of fishing you might do a video that shows all the prep. IE. - bleeding the fish, cleaning and fileting, prepping for whatever way you are cooking them. Differences wheather you are frying, grilling, baking, or chowder. It's easy to figure out a basic rod, reel, and hook setup. But then if they are lucky enough to catch a fish they have no clue what to do. Just a thought. Thank you for the video.

Those drum has bone segments in their skull/head that they can move back and forth against each other, to make the drumming sound you hear in the early evening. When I was a kid, and my dad was cleaning the drum we had caught, he would cut them out for me. They were between a bone and pearl like substance, and they were rounded on one side and they were rough/flatter on one side. The flatter sides rubbing against each other is what made the sound. It was amazing how loud it can be.

Try blackened channel cat! Best done outside due to smoking up the house. You can use this for most any fish. Make a slice in the thick meat above the ribs so your filets cook evenly. Black iron pot is best Real butter Paprika Other seasonings you make like. Melt the butter Season your fish filets how you like. Coat fairly heavy with paprika Get pot good & hot, Roll you seasoned fish in the butter & drop in the hot pot. Depending on the size of you filets, flip them after about 1 minute + if larger go longer.

Nice video Spencer. Yes, I would like to see more videos like this one. I think I got a quick look at Woody too. Also should be getting my river certified sun shirt soon. Got the notification it shipped today. Can't wait to wear it fishing.

Hey Spencer…. Went out this morning …. Did a lot of that standing up sitting down too… At least I caught one cat….. right when I was giving up. Thank you for the new video.

Before the days of gmo we used to crush up special k cereal and dip the fillet in a beat up egg , then fry it in peanut oil . Outstanding for catfish. Never ate gar. Can't tolerate carp. Good video bro ! Blessings ! 🎣

You eat deep fried food... and worry about GMO’s? Do you also smoke a pack... at the gym?

Have you ever fish for gar with a piece of fraid nylon rope. Works great!

I've used to love catching and eating drum. Never ate gar, but would like to try it.

I like the catch and cooks and love to eat garr too ! White bass is good but bleed it and ice it as quick as you catch it especially in summer time and get all the red meat out of your fillet much better tasting and makes a big difference!!!! Catfish is my least favorite of all the four but I like the flats and small blues better than channel cats and cut up very thin chunks for crisper texture! On the garr coat them with a yellow mustard base and Frank's pat them dry some and coat with flour the mustard will cook off and gives the flour a great base to stick too ! Very delicious!

Good video, fun to watch. Kind of curious, did you clean the gar, so it was boneless, if so how. I've eaten Drum before the nice thing about them is they fillet like a bass.

Agree with the order as well. I have eaten all of the species. White bass is actually very good but you must remove all the red meat. With gar, I remove all the gray and stringy stuff. I only eat the loin of drum and with catfish, all red is also removed. White bass and drum is best when gutted and goes straight to salted ice. It gets oily if not. Mix a cup of vinegar to a couple gallons of water and soak for a couple minutes to eliminate the slime on gar and catfish. It will rinse right off and make them much easier to clean and prevent sliming up the meat.

Exactly right on the white bass....red meats gotta go! I also soak mine in salt water overnight...same with bullheads. I know they're. Bait to most but I grew up eating them and it's purty good👍

Here in north central Oklahoma, I’ve tried channel cat, flatheads, white bass, crappie, bass, and bluegill. they all seem to taste the same, they all make a good dinner. White bass here taste like crappie. Frying them in normal fish fry seasoning. Never tried gar, Carp or drum. Enjoyed the video

Hey buddy. I watch all your videos. The catch & cook are really good and the tournament videos are good. The best for me though are when you go after the big uglys in your kayak but I'll be happy to watch any vides you put out. Keep up the good work

I've been in the kayak a decent amount this year with nothing to show for it. They're my favorite too man. I'm gonna keep trying.

Gars, the Bane of many a Fisher, it's Roe (eggs) is said to be Poisonous. You need a Chain Saw to clean one, clean many of these and you'll go thru some knives

I ain't gonna lie, people that say they love eating fish but don't want the fish to taste like fish, make me laugh lol. I'd love to cook some fish up for you Asian style and see if you'd like it. I gained allergies to eating fish just in the last five years but I used to love eating fish, God said I ate too many so he took away my privilege of eating it because I ate too many lol. Keep up the great vids sir, I enjoy watching all of your vids man.
