Townes was one of the best songwriters in America.

This sounds like Townes' voice. Clear and plain. Love it.

Townes was an inspiration for many, many country/folk songwriters over the years. I'd say Nirvana unplugged was a tribute to the singers like Townes. It's worth listening to Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Steve Earle as well. (hint - they were all friends, shared music and more than a little alcohol).

Agreed. Great song. The Heartworn Highways version is a beaut.

Oh dear........"Both fiddle & violin...."? Please tell us you know that they are exactly the same instrument. It's the genre of music that determines what the instrument is called. The song is a story about a larger-than-life character, Pancho who was betrayed by a lesser man for money. And the federales are obviously lying about why they never caught him before. Yeah, sure, we coulda but...........

Merle Haggard and Willy Nelson do a much better version of this in my opinion. If you like this song, I'd recommend checking out their version.
