Townes died young as a recluse and addict. I believe there are people who are sent to the earth with such genius and heart that their body cannot withstand it. I lost my younger brother to suicide and he was a true angel on earth.

I’m sorry you experienced this loss. I understand what you’re talking about though, there are some truly beautiful souls out there that are simultaneously so troubled 😔

This was actually written by The Rolling Stones. It really sounds like a Townes song, though. Some other Townes song to check out: To Live Is To Fly, Pancho and Lefty, Rex's Blues, If i Needed You, Tecumseh Valley, and Mr. Mud and Mr Gold. Cheers....

Also "At My Window", "Flyin' Shoes", "You Are Not Needed Now" - the last about his time in a mental institution - all among his best imo.

As is mentioned, this song is a cover of a Rolling Stones song, released on their album Sticky Fingers in 1971. Great story on this cover version though...you may have heard it as it's played at the very end of the movie The Big Lebowski, after the famous "the Dude abides" line, and as the credits roll. The story goes, the producers of the film had this in the movie, but needed to obtain permission from the Stones to use it. When they asked the Stones' rep, he didn't want to mess with it and basically said "nah, find something else". The producers tried to convince him to let them use the song, said it was it was perfect, it was already to go, but they couldn't release the film without permission to use the song. They really wanted to work it out. So they arranged a screening of the film for the Stones' rep so he could see how the song fit. Earlier in the film, long before they use this song, there's a scene where the Dude is in the taxi, after having been roughed up by the Malibu police, and Peaceful Easy Feeling is playing on the radio. In the film the Dude says "I hate the F!@#ing Eagles, Man!". At that point, the Stones' rep jumps up and says "OK, you can have the song". I don't know if that's a true story or not, but it's a really good story.

This song was written by the illustrious Keith Richard/Mick Jagger. Townes cover is well known for its appearance in The Big Lebowski. You can just imagine Keith writing most of the song (guessing here) and Mick interpreting it in his own way.

You want to get a great sense of who Townes was, listen to those who knew him talk about him before covering one of his songs. Two examples Guy Clark talking about and singing"If I needed you" and Steve earle taking about and singing" Marie" both are great songs and just very insightful into who Townes was to his peers.

@@byrtoff Steve Earle thought so highly of Townes that he named his first born son after him. Steve wrote "Fort Worth Blues" for Townes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmW6gKypbNiKrLc. His son, Justin Townes Earle, who recently passed away was also a great song writer and singer, who would have made Townes proud to be his namesake. Here is an example of his work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmirZ5duiNd0na8.

A great, underrated song is If You’re Reading This by Tim McGraw, never actually released as a single, but he played it live at an awards show and it was so popular that the bootleg version from that charted on the radio.

To me this is along the same lines of Jimi Hendrix covering Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and it hitting so differently than the original.

Thanks for covering this. I like your analysis and style. What a pained life he lived. I think just after 3.00 you had to turn the volume up? That's a problem I find on a lot of reaction videos - the playback volume of the video they choose comes through too low to fully enjoy the song. I'll subscribe as if you like this you'll like what I like. Can I suggest you have a listen to Blaze Foley's version of Clay Pigeons? There are two versions on KZbin one short video and a longer vocals only one, if you haven't already heard it I know you'll like it.
