The spinach roll scam.. good times. Two guys were buying and selling it on both sides of the varrock bank respectively. I checked to make sure the buyer was legit- spent my entire cash stack buying it and when i ran back to flip my newly acquired merchandise the buyer was gone.. Well played! Haha

Old school MMO scams are why all the Nigerian princes, Indians pretending to be IRS agents, and autodialers calling to reach you about your car's extended warranty are going to go out of business. We've seen it all, hell we've done it ourselves. If you grew up on free MMOs in the 00s you're immune to every single scam.

Very weird that this existed. I did not know about it either. But I always kinda felt that the spinach roll was not just a normal item. I guess this shows how RuneScape has developed till today. Incidents are bound to occur and are vital for designing the game to prevent bugs and abuse in the future. Keep revealing these oldest RuneScape tales, they are so interesting to watch and shows historic insight into this beautiful game! Your videos are amazing! :)

I think it shows well how there's so many things in the game we might simply not know about at this stage. Exploits through the history have shown how they've been in the game for months before anyone every found it, and this is similar. What I find way too funny, which I couldn't really express well in the video, is how the spinach roll was added as a drop to the green moss giants. Essentially dropping a part of their body :p

That does help explain why I remember it being so coveted and rare. One of my earliest osrs memories was watching someone do the dialogue to get it and being unable to replicate it. Imagine just being able to guzzle an entire inventory of overloads and go on to obliterate people. I think I started playing around that latter period where the str bonus exploit was patched but people still didn't know how to obtain them and still spread rumors that it was extremely valuable and tried to sell them for like 100k.

Same! I remember playing around 06/07, and I always thought the roll was some sort of rarity, which didn't really play well in my child mind seeing I had a few and thought they were rather easy to get. Figuring out the story in the video gave me a bit of a nostalgic eureka-moment :P

this is what i miss about runescape everything was so exploitable and unkown that you had to go out yourself and just try the things out for example even pre eoc had those times with things like staff of armadyl and virtus,divine the risks were crazy today you see at the max a bandos set

pretty crazy the rolls str bonus was in the game for almost a year, but it was really early game before the game exploded in popularity. There's been tons of game breaking bugs in the last few years lol, they even had to roll OSRS back 3 times.

This channel got me back into RuneScape, old school of course. I remember meeting my best friend in 2001. He showed me the original RuneScape. We’re still best buds to this day, but he won’t go back to RuneScape. He scrambled his password to his main account so he could break his addiction to the game. I still remember buying a spinach roll for 10k back in the day, which was a lot of money for me. My English wasn't good enough to translate it and the seller told me it was a rare item. It's still such a vivid memory in my mind. I will never forget the lesson I was taught that day.

I started at the beginning of RS2 and STILL remember some mystery about the spinach roll. You'd rarely see it being scammed by that time (well, kinda - it was used as a way to inflate bank sale values). Also, another great video! As always, of course :)

Back in like 2002-2005 era my sister and I used to run a really, in retrospect, nasty/cruel little scam somewhat similar to this, but, even worse, really, since the item in question was Fish Food, the quest item collected in Draynor Manor for Ernest The Chicken. At least the Spinach Roll did *something* when you used it. Fish Food couldn't be eaten or used in any way aside from this one specific quest action. But Fish Food was tradeable, for some reason. So one of us would stock up on Fish Food in our inventory and the other would basically empty their entire inventory out. We'd go to separate ends of a populated Varrock Bank and one would spam type, "Buying Fish Food 50k each," while over at the other end the second would do the same but say, "Selling Fish Food 20k." The "selling" party waited while the trades rolled in, accepting them and receiving 20k each time. The "buying" party just sat there, occasionally accepting a trade, leaving the trade window open for a few seconds, and then cancelling it. This was done until all supplies were exhausted, players stopped responding, or calls for reports started to be made. We never got in trouble for it but it was real shitty.

So people worked out if you had 1 att 1 def and 90+ str you could kill literally anyone even the highest level players and all the people who trained with controlled thought you were weak and then got 3 hit before they could exit combat to run.

I played RSC I remember people selling the roll for loads saying it was rare. Had no idea that it used to give a huge str bonus. People would have clocked on (in the end) and it would have become common knowledge if some dude was hitting huge dmg at a low level.

Funnily enough, I was _already_ going to comment, I was fairly sure that an item with a boost like that, even if only for a few days, _could_ have been what sparked a LOT of the scamming in RS1, based on nothing but speculation. Literally. Between stuff like that, and our ideas for construction & summoning, there were so many possibilities, and so many unknowns. Something like this could've been the reason for the 'rare black lobster' scams, or the 'transmuting armor' scam.

RSC was definitely a whole different game. I still remember killing zamorak monks for their 100% steel mace drops and selling them in falador for full rune, then getting skull tricked for said rune while I was in the wilderness picking up the dark warrior fortress rune spawns since RCing didn't exist.

Oh yeah! So you can get it from I think imps and maybe the mystery box from the quizmaster, but also by talking to the alchemist in Varrok and asking him for a free potion. He says it's "for removing spots" or something, and I don't think it really had any use, although later on I think they added an easter egg where you can give it to the people in Sophanem (since they're covered in spots from the plagues) and they thank you for it.

I lured noobs to giantmole in falador and made them trade me their tinderbox, and then I went to tile you spawn when you come down in the molehole, then i digd and logged out, so they think i got outside that way, so they tried obviosly it didnt work, then i said, "OHH you have to extinguish your candle first for it to work" so they did and 1 hit splats killed them and i just waited there for loot to spawn, pickd it up and laughed in my beard, ahh those good old days.

I spent most of my RSC years being one RuneScape Classic best merchants. I sold daily Dragon Meds/Dragon square shields/pumpkins/Easter eggs/certificates/Disks of returning/party hats. I had around about I believe 20 party hats or more aswell as many other items before rs2 came out. Stupidly/sadly I died with all my rares on me in rs2 🤣
