This is common for Jagex, myself and a handful of other player moderators have lost our crowns due to Jagex's lack of care for the players. Myself and a few others were targeted by a group of people who used photoshop to put our accounts for sale on 3rd party websites. We were all demodded even though we all still maintain control of our accounts. A dozen emails later, they just brushed me off as if 8 years serving as a forum / in-game p mod meant nothing. Seriously heart breaking.

They're a player moderator, saying anything to them could've fucked them over given they didn't really have power to silence them and they weren't an employee, their loyalty stretched to Jagex giving them mod. If they had told them what would stop the mod from making a video about that? I don't think you guys get how companies, especially major MMO companies have to deal with stuff like this. With employees they wouldn't leak anything because they have a contract and would get fired, but a mod that is not related to jagex in that he's just a mod isn't enough trust to tell them about anything like this. That and they wouldn't be able to do anything about it legally, since mods don't have to sign contracts and aren't employees. And a mod making the community mad is never a good look, and they don't deserve to be a mod
@Heeroneko2 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of examples where there is a true need to remove a community moderator's privileges....this is not one of them. You're not an employee for the company. You're a trusted voice for the community that's volunteering your time to help moderate the game and bring issues to swift resolutions. It is a community mods duty, to criticize the developers in a respectful manner and bring stuff like this to their attention. Removing someone's mod status for this, is essentially firing someone for doing their job.

Did you not pay attention to the video? He literally only caused hate and boycotting when the solution was almost done. You ignore your customers at your own peril. Responding to valid criticism with a tone-deaf threat like "we think it's in your best interest to take this video down" just heaps fuel on the dumpster fire your customers think your business is becoming.... you're not going to engender any loyalty in your dwindling player base (or retain your revenue figures) by openly demoting the people they see as their spokespeople when they raise _valid player concerns._

It might sound odd but I think the fact that the nuke had been long-planned (but kept secret) casts Jagex's actions at the time in an even *worse* light... Botters are essentially playtesters and keeping them (temporarily) out of the loop is comparable with not running QA on a product because you expect it to fail. If a leak would render the project ineffective, then releasing it will have the same effect within a few weeks. Anti-bot measures should never rely on surprise, because that strategy implies that all you're gunning for is a temporary reprieve before better automation software hits the market. Botting needs to be a constant (and therefore budgeted) day-to-day concern which you never stop working (and spending) on. But yeah sick video I love this shit
@rswillmissit2 жыл бұрын
You're very correct! The bot buke was actually ineffective after a few weeks. I believe color-dependent bots were also unaffected by the nuke, but luckily their numbers were few. Jacmob, the owner of RSBuddy, was the only bot dev who managed to beat the nuke in very short time, and was hired for that reason. He made an entirely new anti-bot system, the one we have today, which was far more effective.

@johnpaulyoshida56902 жыл бұрын
As a relatively new player on osrs I don't really feel I have any sort of say in how this situation was handled. I only really have my general experience as a player and as a programmer. So honestly I can see both sides. As a player being I can totally see the way the PR was handled was a total crap shoot. Though I also can see that this isn't something a company would usually consider PR. Solving a boting issue isn't something you advertise and I can totally see Jagex seeing the issue as generally being non-disruptive to the general player base. Its an issue to be solved internally and swiftly. In a timeline video like this I you can easily see in hindsight how poorly it all culminated. What ultimately sprung this on was the award they were nominated for. Yes the boting problem was the main issue players took issue with but what pushed the creation of Jiblix's video and subsequently his loss of moderator privileges was the fact Runescape was nominated for a reward that they were unqualified to compete for. If I understand nominations for the award correctly its not the company or game that determines what category they are running for. Rather they are placed in categories by the award organizers. Its not as if Jagex proclaimed themselves the greatest Free to Play game, ofcourse when nominated they also can't proclaim themselves as a bad free to play game. Its only natural for a company to say "Hey vote for us if you like our game". Where it gets murky is the removal of Jiblix and their lack of transparency. The boting issue sounds like a sensitive technical issue. Honestly just saying "they are working on it" was a solid call. It's what most developers would say, Anything more and they are leaking information that could be used to counter or prepare against the incoming Bot Nuke. If they said they had a fix just around the corner bot accounts can preemptively unload their items and or be updated in such a way that evades whatever fix Jagex came up with. "Transparency can be damaging when it comes to fighting against malicious users" is a more technical way of putting it. Boters and nonboters can only be given the same level of information. Technically from this point of view player moderators are no different. They are not company employees and ultimately their allegiances are to the users themselves. They can't be trusted with more sensitive information than a regular user. It's too risky. This may sound cold but that's just basic security. Its very clear Jagex cares a lot about their security with how much they urge for their users to protect their accounts. Its regrettable that they decided they couldn't trust Jiblix with insider knowledge that the boting issue was on the cusp of being fixed but I can't really say that he was entitled to such privileges. Unfortunately this made Jiblix a martyr in the eyes of the player base thus causing a further PR disaster. I can't really see what else Jagex could have done from their perspective. If they caved and gave Jiblix information about the bot nuke they take added risk that he may leak information to the general player base. This may have curved the rioting against them but it would have also tipped off the boters. The nuke would have been effective but it would also open up the opportunity for more proactive boters to update their bots in an effort to combat against the nuke. The worst case scenario is that the boters off load their banks or take some bots offline, wait out the ban nuke, update the boting code, and come back in full force. The way the ban nuke went off unexpectedly made sure that the boters lost so much profit that sustaining their operations became unsustainable. Even if they developed new boting code the population of bots had been reduced enough that manual banning of bot accounts had become feasible. Its a difficult scenario. Even with all our foresight and knowledge of how Runescapes boting issue has progressed it still a difficult technical issue on the development side. From the moderation standpoint I can see how Joblix insighting a mob also doesn't look good on the team and on the playerbase. You can't have that sort of person representing you even if he has the best intentions at heart. I can almost garentee that if they had explained the situation to him he would have leaked all the information he had been given to the player base, especially because what he essentially had done was whistleblowing. Don't get me wrong whistleblowing is a good thing, but its less useful when the company is already fixing the issue. The only otherthing they could have said was "Please be patient" and honestly I think the player base would have taken offense to that type of plea as well. What I mean to say is that being a developer is difficult and fighting against malicious users is even harder. Developers are human (and conflating developers and soulless companies is a bit insensitive). This sounds like a difficult situation to balance and ultimately it resulted in a player mod being removed and huge PR hit against the company, however it also resulted in a shit ton of bots being banned, which from the development standpoint was the entire goal, and is also what the players wanted. Its hard not to say that if the rioting hadn't happened and if the matter was left to be worked on internally then this would have been a great triumph against the boting and the games moderation as a whole. But through the lack of trust between player mods and the developers on both sides as well as poor timing it became a PR nightmare.

4:59 Pure Kq Pax / Magnus was the first lvl 3 skiller to max and the best skiller to ever play rs. I was a big fan of his manly because he was Danish ;)
@pcbangbros83502 жыл бұрын
How TF do you become "the best skiller". I'd say "What did he do? Click harder on the willow tree?" But, as we can see from Woox you can actually become the best skiller by learning how to tick manipulate, so having said that, that would mean Pure KQ Pax is NOT the best skiller to ever play RS. Until I see him tick manipulate 17 lobsters in a nano second.
@Disabled_fandom2 жыл бұрын
@@pcbangbros8350Lol he was Zezima for lvl 3 skillers or just for me. The key to become the "best skiller" is not tick manipulation it is 1. No life the game 2. Play efficient 3. Be rich Also he did tick manipulation before tick manipulation really was a thing, look at his hunting and woodcutting videos. Also think he did 3.5 tick cooking if I remember correctly.

it seems that the best reward from the new quest was actually the music 🙃. Loved the integration and as always great work.

It's a real shame Jagex hasn't changed. It been the same old song and dance for the past 11 years. I'm aware OSRS exists. But, it's still Jagex. They need to hit rock bottom. I've started playing christmas 2006. I remember hearing about the Jiblix incident so came to youtube and saw it. I agreed with him. I started playing less. When Squeal of Fortune came. I took a break. Took another break around eoc. Finally quit in 2021. Still have urges to log in but zero desire to play. Current problem is mtx and Jagex pretty much thinks it's player base is stupid.

When you realize just how much shit would have been avoided if they were just a little more transparent with him instead of being cryptic and just demoting him without a word

@ember35792 жыл бұрын
This would've all been avoided had Jagex been more responsive to their pmods when they brought up shit like this. If a pmod tips off the bot makers, then ban them and scream why from the mountaintops. Simple.

The f2p bot problem continues, though. Recently I started a new f2p acct to see how a player gets stated in the current state of the game (and made that acct a tribute to one of my fave musicians that I first encountered in the id-60s), and when I had said alt going to the mining guild to get runie ore or even luminite, the freaking runite rocks were totally surrounded by bots on the f2p worlds. Methinks Jagex nds to do another nuke TBH.

“This player moderator turned everyone against jagex” Reality: Not everyone it seems
@Aberrantly2 жыл бұрын
He didn't even really turn anyone against Jagex, he just made them aware of how big of a problem botting had become. Jagex on the other hand (as seems to be the same bloody tune every time) succesfully managed to make a fair few of their customers less than happy about them. There's actually a fairly simple solution for getting rid of bots and what not, but Jagex shared the same mindset on the matter as Valve does, and therefore leaves the doors right open for them to come in so that they can make a few extra quick bucks on it. I have yet to actually come across a player let alone a moderator who thinks that Jagex is doing a good job. Some of the things that I've heard them say really goes to show how little Jagex cares about them for essentially doing their job. If you for an example take a look at the game design, most of it was inspired by other players and other game developers. RS reminds suspiciously much about Sky12 (think it was called?) when it comes to stuff like armour and weapons, whereas stuff such as the elder gods were pretty much stolen from Howard Phillips Lovecraft's work (take a look at Mah, looks oddly familar doesn't she?) I mean we even have the eldritch terror running around. Then there's Camelot, and in general just not that much originality to the game. The Elves of Tirannwn are based on WoW I'm pretty sure (or something like that) it feels and looks as if Jagex just took popular concepts and implemented them into the game. And I get that part of RuneScape's soul is that of its many references, but when it comes to actually crediting those who made all of it possible?... Yeah, not really seeing much of that. I mean look at what gaming companies like Sony are doing for their customers. Otherworldly graphics, gigantic areas to explore, fully voice-overed content and you even get to pick how your hero should sound like I mean Jagex could learn a LOT from Sony. I'm fearing that if Hogwarts' Legacy is just half as good as it looks like, then Jagex might actually have to turn the key because Carlyle is all about investment and seeing how Sony keeps hitting the jackpot whereas Jagex keeps dissappointing people... I mean it's of course just speculation but I could personally see that happen sometime soon unless Jagex steps up and actually listens to their players again.
