yes, and different vibes to the songs too.

They are different albums. The difference in sound is huge regardless of songs being written at same sessions. It sounds exactly like Hetfield said, Load was kind of warm up for Re-Load. Despite huge production on it , Load sounds like demo compared to Re-Load.
@garyv249812 күн бұрын
So, I'm at 14. I was ready to say the S&M albums were not "real" albums until you mentioned something I hadn't considered. A normal live album is just a recording of a live performance of material that exists on a regular album, with some minor variations. But the addition of the symphony is not a minor variation, and is a significant contribution to each song. Essentially different arrangements of existing songs, so they become unique pieces. And thus, I think that makes them actual albums. And my definition of an album does not require them material to be uniquely new creations. Covers count. Bands put covers in their albums all the time. So what if the album is entirely covers? Garage Inc still counts as an album. EPs like Garage Days Re-Revisited and Beyond Magnetic are too short to be an album. Load and Re-load may have started with the intent to be one album. But they have separate releases, so they are separate albums. And I agree with you, Lu Lu is a Lou Reed album that Metallica was featured on. It is not a Metallica album featuring Lou Reed.

No Leaf Clover and -Human were leftovers from the Load/ReLoad period that they couldn't get to work (having the orchestra there helped complete them). It's tracks like that and the Presidio stuff that makes me wonder how much unfinished stuff is around. I'd be surprised if there aren't a bunch of eighties songs that never got made, and I speculate that whilst writing the black album, lots of ideas got thrown away for sounding too much like the eighties stuff. With the Load era they had many riffs to jam on, and one of the reasons they chose to work with Bob Rock again is to have a professional ear decide which ideas work and which don't. I've always wanted to hear some of those riffs that never made it during that period. Bands don't like to go backwards, but I've always wanted an ep finishing off some of these old songs, particularly now that they have Rob who could add some of his own colour to the tracks

Their first 5 studio albums are what I listen to the most. I ignore the Loads and St Anger albums. I got the Loads (disappointment) and heard a little St Anger to not bother with it. I've gotten picky with their recent stuff. I'm not sure how many albums to really count for them. The original Garage Days album was good since Jason's bass is heard before they silenced him on Justice.

'LuLu' was a Lou Reid album with Metallica as a backing band. Were the 'Use Your Illusion' albums 1 or 2 albums? Same for 'Load' and 'Re-Load'. Does 'The Spaghetti Incident' count as a Guns N Roses album? Same for the 'Garage Days'. I like how Metallica makes every album with a different sound and different song structures, so that each album is like it's own sub-genre. Ever since the 80s there's been a repeating pattern, a million copycat bands emerge from their garages with the sound of the last Metallica album just in time to start hating on the newest Metallica album that has a completely different sound that influences the next crop of copycat garage bands.

This makes me think of a weird thing back in early 2003 (pre-St. Anger) where my girlfriend was convinced Metallica had, at minimum, 30 albums. She swore that her ex had all of their albums and there clearly were 30 or so. She refused to believe me that they only had 7 at the time (8 if you count Garage Inc. or 9 if you count S&M). I figured she was also counting Megadeth albums, but even then, at the time, that only adds another 9 albums. I even gave her that maybe she was also including singles and such, but no, she continued to insist that Metallica, for sure, without a doubt, had released a minimum of 30 full albums between 1983-2003. Even Prince only put out 21 albums in that time (granted, one was a 3-disc set and one was a 5-disc set that was technically 3 albums). We agreed to disagree.
