I confess my decision is entirely political: I won't be buying the new rules for the simple reason that I have no interest in giving my money to WotC, after all of their recent shenanigans. Someone over there genuinely seems to have no idea how customer relations works, and I'd much rather give my money to independent publishers than a company that threatens copyright notices against people they've asked to reveiw their product, and that sends literal hired thugs around people's houses. My group's currently getting stuck into 'Avatar Legends', and next up will likely be 'Pendragon'; after that, there are so many options there's simply no point planning too far ahead 😅. Thanks as usual for the insight, Stephen 👍

I haven't bought a WotC product in many years at this point. Not because of any ideological reason or anything like that, my group has just moved on. PF2e for a d20 system, and other systems when we're looking for something more focused on narrative. But now? Just like you said - WotC has been outright hostile to its own customers and the world at large. I am not going to give my money to someone who hates me. And it's a bit of a shame, really. I grew up on D&D 2nd Edition. Dark Sun, Planescape, Council of Wyrms, Greyhawk, Ravenloft, Forgotten Realms, the list of amazing content is very deep. The days of TSR were wonderful. There was so much imagination. When WotC bought everything up things were fine for a while, but then... So disappointing. But we don't need them. We have better options - and MANY of them - at our fingertips.

I always say "Friends Don't Let Friends Buy WOTC." There are so many awesome games out there which can be bought and played. The corporate model is to pen you into only using their product via endless upgrades. I kind of like to switch it up. Maybe do some horror for a few sessions, then do some sci fi. Or even get out some of the old Tunnels and Trolls solo dungeons because they are so cheap on Drive Through as PDFs.

I purchased every single WotC published 5e book, both physical and digital on D&DB, until I stopped after the new Planescape. I have not purchased any official products since, and I will continue that practice. I have enough amazing and beautiful (including 3rd party) content for 5e to last a lifetime. I'm getting into Dungeon Crawl Classics as an equally favorite game, and I'll occasionally try out other systems at a bi-weekly RPG game night that's hosted at my LGS.

I came to RPGs with D&D 5E in 2019 with D&DBeyond as the tool to use, so I never learnt how to make a character on paper. It’s only recently where I’ve regressed from digital to physical (OGL helped), as I usually DM I don’t build characters but did get to play a decent one shot so decided to finally teach myself how to properly build a character. I built characters manually in 3.5, switched to 4e where I became reliant on the builder and switched back to manual for 5e because I couldn't justify rebuying all the hard copies of books in digital so Beyond would let me build the characters I wanted to play. I find there is something rewarding about flipping through the books and constructing the character old-school.

That's a really good point. It's a really difficult thing to switch over to a new system - even one so close as 5.5 may be. It makes more sense to avoid slow down of any campaign nearing it's end, by switching rules set. If you just started, a campaign, maybe a switch is more likely. But until then, probably not. There's also the fact that the core books are staggered so much, that many will wait until they have ALL the books, so they know monsters vs players will play out.
@badmojo0777

its NOt a new system lol, the changes are largely cosmetic, rebalancing, rules clarification etc.. the core game works the same, although anyone who cant be bothered to level their character without D&DByond , dont bother, i could care less lol i miss the days , when the RPG community was 90% inteligent no life nerds. Dont get me wrong i love that the game s popular but that also means a large % of the new players are short attention span, lazy, and/or not as smart as the target audience this game was made for.

@@badmojo0777 I do agree that the new PHB is largely the old one, plus some very welcome and needed changes, such as origin feats and heroic inspiration (raise your hand if you've ever got more than one inspiration per campaign from your DM), and it seems like the monk might actually be playable! I don't get what's so hard about leveling your character by pen and paper either. I mean, it's not rocket science, you gain a few spells and spell slots and/or you get a cool new ability. Sometimes you pick a subclass but it's all in the book!

The group I play in to this day we are still using the Evermore AD&D character builder, the one that came on the CD rom that is rules for 2nd edition or 2.5. We still favor 2.5. We have gotten rather good and customizing the rule in the program, and finding ways to break them. Keeping that legacy software usable on computers today is a challenge though. Sure we do know how to level a character though, but having the pre printed not our scrawl for character sheets are nice in our advanced age.

I agree, most groups probably won't switch over right away. There might be a few groups that might try to blend books together, like in the case a PC dies and the player wants to try a 2024 class. This could lead to issues with mixed classes from different books, not even mentioning spell changes and how the GM is going to rule the differences between 2014 and 2024
@daikatarokamegawa542
@daikatarokamegawa542 2 ай бұрын
As a DM, I would rule it as an all or nothing. Wizards says you can play a 2024 character in a 2014 setting no issues and from what I've seen, it holds true. Therefore, I'd rule that if you're going to switch to 2024 rules, you accept ALL changes to your class(es), not just mix and match. The spells are actually pretty easy to explain, with magic users having their own twist on spells such as Jim's magic missile, so you cast with the 2024 rules and abide by those.

I'll definitely be playing my campaigns out fully in 5.0, it removes a painpoint of converting a character that may not end up working the same in the new book, but it also allows me to wait and see how the "functional" reception of the 5.5 book will be.

I started DMing D&D in 1974, pre first edition. I was elated when first edition came out with actual rules and tables I could use. I was still early in my world building, so I was able to incorporate new rules right away. When second edition came about, I was wondering how I would have to change my world and DMing as we transitioned to the new books. Again, I was surprised that it wasn't hard to do. We played that edition quite a long time, so it became the game we all knew and loved. Third edition came out and we were wondering how that would change things. Fortunately for me, we were able to start a third edition game quite soon after it came out. I had a harder time with my world since the new rules gave me actual tables instead of just making things up. I ran quite a few games, but got frustrated with all the supplementary books, added classes, races, and such that my world didn't have. I solved this by using almost none of the extra rules and never incorporated 3.5 very much. We didn't play fourth edition and my books are in fine condition unlike previous editions. I have enjoyed fifth edition very much as it returned to more of a feel of earlier editions. From the little that I know of 5.5, I probably will not make the change, and, at 75 now, I don't like the way the game has changed from a gritty game to a game of pixies and spacemen mindflayers. It has been quite an adventure.

I got back in to TTRPG after like, 20 years, just a few years ago. Initially, I joined a D&D Beyond based game, and loved it for the hyperlinked data, and the easy character creation, and levelling up. When I joined my second campaign, it wasn't computer-based, and I found that I love doing those things manually. There's so much fun in doing the research, watching videos about builds and themes, and it made character building more fun that ticking boxes. I am someone who thinks about my characters between games. The simplified character stuff in the online platforms might actually be taking away from the fun of gaming, especially _between_ sessions.

@@DanielZahra I have to disagree here. They know that initial sales will be good because players want to see what they changed so for now as long as you are dealing with beyond and accepting the desired goal of digital transition, they don't care what you use. Once they have you locked into beyond and digital they will change it to where you have no choice or worse yet clone beyond and have the story books shared but have two sites for Beyond the 5e version and the 2024 ruleset that I refer to as 5e Renerfed. that way they can charge more by having two subscriptions for each one and a new tier, let's call it the Vecna tier where you have access to both rulesets. in the end they don't care what rules you use as long as you still give them their money that the universe, inconveniently, placed in your stewardship.

Great review of where D&D is being pushed. Back in the days of Yore, I sharpened my teeth on AD&D. Back in 2021 like a large mass of individuals did I re-invested in this wonderful game. Sitting around the table again, laughing, crying, sharing time and stories with likeminded individuals. Mostly now playing as a DM, I find it hard to contemplate this newest movement of D&D to online. I find it better to be together to share in the experience, which in my opinion is more difficult to engage online. I’m always interested in seeking new ideas and game mechanics, but pretty sure not going to support 2024 versions with my financial resources, rather look for older versions or support kickstarters to improve my social game nights.

Our campaign will continue with the 2014 rules as we’re at level 10. However, we will use the revised rules for specific clarifications. But because we like to play with new toys, we’ll do some 2024 one shots when our DM needs a week off. As for dndbeyond, it’s going to be as simple as de-selecting the 2024 PHB on the character creation home page to continue leveling up via 2014 rule set (I don’t have inside information, just my opinion)

I don't personally play D&D anymore, but I have a relative that does and he's holding off until after all three books are released. He made an interesting point that the power levels of the 5.5 edition characters feel really out of control when it comes to 5.0 monsters. He talked to me about his using a third party way of making monsters that actually work with 5.0, and he's not sure what 5.5's character classes would do to encounter balance. He's definitely in the 'wait and see' for now, until all the books are out. (Oh, and please don't pick this comment for a free PHB. I don't play the game and would rather the book go to someone who does!)

Honestly when it comes to general rules, there are a lot of clean ups and clarity: surprise, shoves and grapples as part of unarmed strikes, search and study actions, etc. The issue is that some things particularly player focused are not all completed worked out as much as they are marketing. I think people will just take time and Honestly most even running campaigns can which the non combat rules and be fine. My DM decided that mid September we will all vote whether to change to 2024 or not. Even if we do, we will likely have to keep old stuff since not all of our character features are changing.

I mostly run Call of Cthulhu and DCC. I keep the 5e rules on hand for 3rd party adventures, settings and conversions of old modules, so I would use 2024 rules if needed for future releases of that nature. I do enjoy reading new rule sets for ideas and simply to see what has changed, so I will eventually pick up the 2024 rules. My players will use whatever system I choose, and prefer that I learn all the rules and disseminate only the necessary info to them. Without my guidance, I'm sure they would exclusively use online tools for character generation and leveling up. Not everyone has the level of interest, or time, to learn new game systems.

Greetings from México. My table (3 of my friends from the 90s, the son of one of them, my girlfriend, my girlfriend's son and his girlfriend) quit a year+ long campaign after beating a Mines of Phandelver/Dragon of Icespire Peak mix, they didn't care about following up with the adventure. Then we started a Basic Fantasy campaign online with old TSR modules I thought they would like better, but they hated it. No one was showing interest in the new core books because I told them about the test documents Wizards were releasing and they disliked the rules, specially the removal of half-orcs and half-elves, the debuffing of their sub-classes and new different types of feats. They feared it was going to become another Pathfinder. We have from a teenager to a grandmother in our group, they hardly had time to learn 5e, this 2024 thing (6e like my group calls it) seemed even more complicated to them. 2 weeks ago they told me they wanted to give it another try and start fresh with 5e from level 1, same characters, but playing Curse of Strahd this time. They believed it likely wasn't 5e rules that sucked, but the Pandelver adventures. I was about to session-zero them, when all these details about the new 2024 PHB started pouring down. Last sunday, I asked in our groupchat if someone wanted to update their character with the new 2024 rules, just out of curiosity. I searched the changes and described them to the two half-orcs (monk and druid) in our group, and also described weapon mastery, how new feats work from the backgrounds... They freaking loved it. They know as an old-school DM I complaint a lot about feats, and they liked they debuffed a little the most problematic ones, for my sake. My 49 years old girlfriend who had never played RPGs before 5e was dissapointed there were no more half-orcs, but I googled the mix species rules from the test documents and then she was 100% onboard with the new stuff. Now everyone is very excited about getting the new PHB and playing Curse of Strahd with their updated characters. They think this "6e" doesn't seem that complicated to learn, after all. I'm apalled. I tought all of them how to play D&D, I must have done something wrong LOL. I just wish I wasn't the forever DM of all of them and I could play old TSR modules with OSE, or Hackmaster, or the newer 5e adventures but with Dungeon World or Shadowdark rules, or something. I dislike this Disneylike version of D&D, but the family loves it. I'll do my goddamn best with what I got for them. They agreed to play a different game once every few sessions in consideration to my sanity, but otherwise we are becoming a "6e" group from now on.

If really appreciate being one of the lucky winners. I plan on using the new book for the subclasses… well most of them. See that’s the beauty of the book situation. We can pick and choose what we want. I’m fine with them starting at 3rd level for two reasons. 1) first and second level can go pretty quickly if you want to and I’d guess that a number of campaigns just skip these levels. But that is a decision that leapfrogs the following… 2) you can use those two levels to develop the character with a bit of role play. Yes people will probably know what subclass they are going to choose but it’s an opportunity for fun as they develop their character in the field. Examples: The warlock is receiving power and communication of a sort and has made a deal but do they fully understand who and what they are dealing with? The sorcerer has erupted with power, they are discovering who and what they are. Like a superhero just learning to fly. The fighter has been training hard and working on their abilities and you get to watch as all of their training and efforts suddenly arrive! The cleric has been devoting their time and focus to their god and can do some small things but they haven’t yet been acknowledged or fully “seen” by their deity. Have they done what is required to stand out among the thousands of other worshippers?

I started playing when it was Advanced D&D, took a break for a while, and jumped back in during the pandemic at the height of 5e success. The way D&D has streamlined has been brilliant for playability and ease of use etc. Our TTRPG community is blessed to be living in a time of seemingly endless gaming options and opportunities. I am looking at 5.5 as just another evolution of D&D. Will I and my players use it? Maybe, maybe not. Not all of my players can afford buying all new books. My home brew world and campaign is based on all the 5e mechanics and rules etc. but I suspect that over time 5.5 will bleed into our game play - at least any bits we deem worthy. I am looking forward to seeing what works and what else my players and I can tweak to our own needs.

Great video! Thank you so much for bringing up the potential issue wit making characters on D&D Beyond! I am thinking that the may do what they have done with previous new releases, allowing those who own content, including legacy content, to use that when making a character. I am currently running a game that is 9th level. I am planning on taking a hard look a the potential of switching the rules over, and following the UA method of having the new override the old when there is a conflict, starting soon after the book release. I do have to say that, since they stated selling the books at Gen Con, I think they should start allowing those who purchase the book online in pre-orders to access the digital content immediately.

By the time my group hits the next level and spend a winter unable to adventure, they can spend their downtime leveling up and gaining a weapon mastery, any new Feat I like, etc. Additionally, I don’t believe that they are going to limit character, creation, and level up on D&D Beyond to only the new version of dungeons and dragons. They have mentioned many times continuing support for fifth edition.

I know that many people fall towards the extremes of the spectrum when discussing the revision; and I'm trying to avoid allowing myself to follow suit. That said, I just think its quite a shame that they didn't better use the time they had (2 years) to really address the revision in a strong way. I get they had layoffs and certainly other fires they had to put out from time to time. But a small team of developers guided by a strict framework could have done just fine. For instance, if I were in charge I would've focused on: - Cloudy rules wording that delivered more questions than answers. - Spells. -If they don't do what they say on the tin.. change the label (Detect Traps). -If they are among those rarely (if ever) taken... why? Address that. -If they remove creatures or PCs from the fight for a long period of time, simply get rid of them. You already have Conditions that effectively do the same thing, but at a lower consistency. -If you must keep force cage and resilient sphere, at least give the restraints an AC and hit points so that those trapped within have some determination of how to free themselves. -Change tiny hut to not allow the "pill box" utility that it does now. -Backgrounds. -As presented they just have too many pain points. Sure, you can "narrate" your character into any background, but prescribing feats to them in a hardwired manner just creates too many pain points that DMs then have to clean up or "stand on that hill". -Should've just gone with Tasha's "add +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1" to your ability scores.. it was simple and didn't require mental gymnastics Species/Races/Origins/ x. -To streamline some while maintaining the cultural differences of others is just plain confusing. -Taking away iconic mainstays such as Stonecunning for dwarves is removing flavor, not designing with it in mind. It wasn't amazingly mechanical, but with the right DM it added a good bit of flavor. You shouldn't remove flavor, you should ADD to it. -To increase dwarf, halfling and gnome movement speed to 30 feet so they would align with other races, then extend goliath's movement speed to 35 because "tall race"... again, that just smacks of confusion. -Not to mention the removal of "half" species. I just feel in the player facing tome of the flagship ttrpg system, perhaps we could've gotten a more nuanced character design system that embraced the mixing of species with options to choose between their various benefits in a balanced way Conditions. -As one of the most impactful systems codified for combat, these could've used a bit more cleaning up and trimming down. -They should be extremely intuitive to both the players and the DM; I'd bet they are one of the most googled topics for 5e. And while I'm no designer, I feel strongly that I could've accomplished the above list, on my own with no overhead, in about 8 months. I also feel strongly that it would've made a fair amount of the player base (and the DM side as well) happy. I have no delusion that some would've been unhappy. But that really can't be a reasonable goal in this space. I'd love to have a copy to look at, read thoroughly and perhaps change for my table's use. But I'm not overly convinced that I would put forth the hefty price for less options, less flavor and more issues that I'd have to resolve on my own. I'm sure the designers feel they did their upmost best, and I've no clue what internal struggles they had to contend with during this long drawn out process; but even when trimming the fat, you still keep an eye on the quality of the meat you leave behind. Hopefully they'll get it figured out. And also throw some effort into designing the other two pillars a bit more.

I think some people might use things like the small QOL changes early on, before using the full book. Mostly because, as you say, the DMG isnt out for a while. New monsters are less of an issue, the MOTM book already remastered a lot of monsters, and shows the direction the new monsters will take, so we might see "5.5e" campaigns before the new MM is out. Particularly, as you say, DNDBeyond is going to be updated to the new rules sooner rather than later.

If nothing else, they can be used in the same manner as the 4e books I got as a Convention volunteer (back when WOTCactually attended in person). They made a great doorstop to keep the bedroom door open for my cat. (the 4e books were so bad, my cat tried to bury them). Then again, I got those free. The new books are a bit expensive for doorstops. (And my cat passed away last year, so no D&D hate from him.) As for the new Pathfinder 2 Core books, all of our games immediately converted. We also play a lot of Pathfinder Society, so transition was seamless. Right now though, we're all shifting gears and going hot and heavy into the Starfinder 2e playtest. (which greatly outsold the new 5e books. They had to limit the number per person. Apparantly WOTC didn't feel the need to limit the 3,000 per day stock. It seems like several KZbinrs are also giving out free copies.)

That said, a lot of my favorite classes and subclasses got nerfed hard in the 2024 version, so I definitely will only be implementing bits and pieces of the 2024 version. As far as actually buying a copy of the 2024 book, honestly there are other 5E books that are much higher priorities for me, some of which are 3rd party and a some of which are wotc books. My bet is DnDB will force change to the new rules. They might allow if you have certain content to use that content in the old edition to use it in the new one, but they will likely default to the new rules as a way to trying to push people to change over. LIkely done in a 'see aren't we nice we are giving you the new stuff" but my bet is even if they give players that peacemeal, they WILL add stuff that only applies to the new books you won't have access to which will be made more and more prevelent as time goes on to try and force you to switch. A likely 'slowly boil the frog' approach so people don't immediately get mad at them, but eventually you will get hot and feel compelled to switch over due to 'inconveinences'

Yeah. I'm that sort of nostalgic nerd. But when I saw some of the video game-like monetization ideas I pulled back. Now I am a wait and see. If I could pick up the books second hand and not feel like I was contributing directly to Hasbro I'd jump on them in a heartbeat if only to peruse them and then have them look pretty on my RPG collection shelves.

I think the new version sounds like it is better enough to be worth switching to in a vacuum. It's mostly just a question of whether if you are going to switch anyway, it's better to move to an entirely new system, Pathfinder or whatever, that suits your group's needs better.

Everyone will be forced to use the new rulebook. How do I know? It happened to PF2e for FoundryVTT. The only way we could play the old rules was to not upgrade and be forced to use old modules that locked us out of what we have grown accustomed to using.
