We are starting this 2-day trip in West Melton and heading to Washpen Falls. This track is on private land and costs NZD 10 per person. Afterwards, we are stopping at the Dubliner pub in Methven before heading to the Hakatere Conservation Park. The park might be known through the Lord of the Rings, where they filmed Edoras. You can also find the Ashburton Lakes close by. We slept overnight in the Car park of Mount Sunday, where you can stay overnight in a self-contained vehicle. We woke early to attempt the Mt Sunday hike (around 45 minutes). Highly recommend

I was there a couple weeks ago! FYI the “castle” on the hill in the movie was not CGI, they actually built it up there. The only CGI buildings were the little huts down the hillside.

The Castle at Edoras wasn't done with FX, it was done with hammer and nails. It was actually built on top of the hill and then removed after. Some of the village on the lower slopes was FX but the castle hall was real.

Methven is very busy in winter, full of tourists who have come to ski at Mt Hutt which is just up the road and is one of the main skifields in NZ. They also have hot pools there.

Best way to have hot cross buns is to cut them in half, spread on the butter, and heat up in the microwave for a few seconds….they taste and smell amazing! (or you can toast them in the oven if you like them crispy 👌)

Lake Clearwater is a fishing village Camp. There's a number of them around the Canterbury and south Canterbury region. Methven is a great town. I suggest checking out the Methven hot pools if you get a chance. The swim up bar is fantastic.

Methven has awesome hot pools. Better than Hanmer because it's not overrun by tourists. No, that's not Mt Cook, it's Mt D'Archaic that you see straight up that valley. Mt Cook is much further left and obscured by the mountains on the other side of the river. It's not that hidden, Tour groups get taken there by the bus load.

Yo ya made it to clear water, beautiful place, especially when theirs abit of snow in the back ground may/june, we stayed where you had breakfast lake camp, its free, you can have open fires there, toilets, its so peaceful there, an yes most of the places on lake clear water are holiday homes, there's a handful of permanent residents there as well, always go there when down south, as said beautiful, cheers!

Hopefully you worked it out for yourselves but the hot cross bun(s) you had at the beginning are meant to be eaten hot - cut in half, place under the grill until they're hot and a little crispy/brown on the top, slather with butter and... yum! The heat helps bring out the spices... :)

Once NZ was colonised by the British and things had calmed a bit, they made it available for the lower classes to immigrate here to own a slice of land (likely stolen by them 1st) and many Scottish and Irish took advantage of it. They tended to settle on the south island more than the north. They, too, have always had a historical beef with Britain and likely jumped at the chance to get as far from them and actually be able to 'own' land. This is why you will see Irish pubs as many are very proud of their ancestry as they should be. I'm surprised we don't have Scottish pubs also, but that doesn't seem to be a thing, even with their drinking culture being similar.

As Sam Francis stated: The main building was NOT cgi. From memory, it took 6 months to build the Hall. They filmed for three weeks, then had to tear it down. The Government only allowed them to build on condition that, once filming was complete, the building would be torn down and all traces of building be removed. Such a shame because the Great Hall looked amazing.

Kia Ora. Another great vlog. Did Glen say $3 for one hot cross bun was cheap?! I can buy a pack of 6 hot cross buns for $3....in the UK that is. I'm originally from Aotearoa but I'm always shocked at how expensive food is when I visit. Food over here is going up up up too. I reckon though, given half a chance, I wouldn't mind paying 3 bucks for a hotcross bun just for the lifestyle & scenery. I do miss the odd meat pie & Boston buns too. I know you've eaten plenty of pies but have you eaten a Boston bun? it's a large spiced bun with a thick layer of coconut icing. It was also called a coffee bun back in the day. 👍

Yeah there dirt cheap back home in Ireland too 😂 sure your in a bakery so you pay a premium compared to the grocery store 😛 anyways yeah prices are much higher compared to back home but rent is cheaper here so it balances out I suppose. 😅
