The plants you were seeing are commonly called vegetable sheep (because they look like sheep in the distance) and belong to a mountain daisy group - probably Haastia or Raoulia species.

For the benefit of others contemplating hikes like this, this is really a situation where a Personal Locator Beacon would be well advised. If you take a fall and get injured, hours from any help, it allows you to signal your location to search and rescue services. They are not very expensive and could save your life. I carry one for sailing singlehanded.

It's fantastic on a good, calm day like you had, but when you get rain, it can be quite different. It's very exposed up there and people can be prone to hypothermia. Two people have died in separate incidents in recent years, sadly. That was in winter with snow. And there's no water until you get to the hut. Those rock-hopping parts for a few kilometres are fairly taxing if you aren't used to it. But it's one of the most popular hikes around so the hut is full most nights for much of the year. You need to pre-book if you want to spend the night and they usually have a hut warden to check your booking.

I did the track up Pinchgut and then along the ridge to Angelus in ‘96 in November. We had heavy snow along the ridge so it was hard going. Took us about four and a half hours with a group of 15 year olds (school trip) and we made good use of snow axes at points. We were carrying all our gear and food for 5 days, so big packs. We got snowed in at the Lake Angelus hut for three days, then walked out down the gorge to the head of Lake Rotoiti and back around to St Arnaud. On the second day at the hut two young guys showed up for breakfast. They had started from St. Arnaud (not driven to the car park at the base of Pinchgut as we did) about 4am and were heading around to do the entire circuit we were doing in one day! This was not unheard of back in the day. It was an epic experience.

Well done it must be harder walking and filming as usually you use your arms for balance. You have taken me places I didn't know existed and I have done some tramping mainly down in the South of the island. Great video of a fantastic hike, such a brilliant spot when there's no wind and cloud. Definately check the weather for that one, and you guys had such a wonderful day. I see you found the mountain sheep plant. That's a much easier walk with a lighter day pack, can be challenging with full overnight gear with those rock hopping sections. You definately need some emergency shelter and comms though just in case. Your NZ adventure has been amazing to follow, so nice to see people showcasing and enjoying our country.

Great video. Theres often been talk why the cafe and fish and chip shop there is often closed. It's mostly just holiday home around the lake. I suggest if you ever get another chance to check out the blue lakes walk. There is also a couple of other walks that go between the two lakes and ones that goes through part of rainbow station and into the next valley over. Unfortunately it's an area the experiences some pretty hursh winter storms with large rock slides and isn't part of the great walks. But personally I think that's what makes more special as there often alot less people around

That route is non-trivial in any weather condition. But if you are careful its ok. Long walk for a return if you are loaded up. But hey carry what you have to be safe. Thanks guys.

So now that you two have started your training and seem to really like the hikes... Maybe next time you come back to NZ you could document the Te Araroa Trail... The 3000km track from the north to the south... Only a three or four month hike... And well well worth every bit of pain and fortitude to experience the wonder and beauty of nature and to also understand yourself and what you are capable of... Much respect...

I think thoughs big mussels can make you hit the wall sooner ,you are both fit i thought Mado has some good endurance, I think taking some good snaks with you can realy help.You do have to be careful in nz the weather can change and get realy cold in no time. The New Zealand back country should never be taken lightly there may be no dangerous animals other than the two legged ones the weather can change very rapidly in the South Island the topography can be very steep and challenging it’s easy to get lost you can have a lot of fun but DONT take it lightly
