I think alot of people tend to forget the fact that in the true ending of shadow 05 shadow puts the past behind him, maria, the ark, gerald, he lets go of all of that. So in 06 when we see him working with G.U.N. to protect humanity, its a clear fact that hes doing it out of his own freewill and not cuz of a promise. Thats one of the many reasons 06 shadow is the best shadow, it shows where shadows heart truly is

But who is it for? Two associates whose objectives just happen to line up with each other? His strongest rival/doppelganger and _his_ social circle? The 50 billion random on Earth who make up the world population and culture? There's no way Shadow has _that_ for a bunch of complete strangers, especially after everything he went through, and the generally dismal reputation of everyday people in general. Would YOU be this open towards those who would greet you with general apathy (and some politeness) at best, and hostility/malice at worst? Oh, and crap like Heroes and 06 that people like to use as "legitimate proof" of their bond, always felt made up on the spot for the sake of those games' narratives. Rather than actually develop those bonds on-screen, SEGA pretends that they were always a thing, but then expect _you guys_ to forget with his flat edgelord depiction in the IDW comic, just because DBZ (the weakest franchise when it comes to character development for anyone who isn't Gohan) and Vegeta (proud race warrior guy who rivals Goku) are more popular and wide stream.

@NorthSutherland your completely disregarding all the development he went through as a character, granted the games don't really leave enough time to flesh it out properly but still. Shadow, rouge and omega went through an ark together in heroes and you can see that by the end their FRIENDS and so what if he threatened rouge in a past game? Yeah shadow can act tough and cold at times but that doesnt mean he cant make friends with her later down the line (I assume your talking about team dark when you mention sega wanting us to forget their bond) and games like sonic battle show that shadow has extreme sympathy for humanity, it's in the game clear as day. Shadow even says "it is my desire to bring hope to humanity" so yeah he DOES feel for all those random strangers.

Because all the focus is usually on the main character and namesake of the franchise, it just leaves the following questions: 1. At what point did Shadow start seeing Rouge as a close companion? 2. _Why_ would he ever see her this way, especially when he had closer ties with Maria, who was taken from him? Heck, Shadow even _threatened_ Rouge at one point, when he outed her as a double agent for the president. All I know is, if I were in Shadow's shoes, the last person I would trust (aside from the military organization that shot Maria in the first place) is a flirtatious vain (and sometimes comically exaggerated) jewel thief with ulterior motives to satisfy her own riches. BTW, this is actually the _best_ characterization of Rouge, complete with Lani Minella's voice delivery.

Rouge isn’t just a thieving spy. She’s someone who has trouble trusting people out of fear that they’ll stab her in the back so she works alone. Until she met Shadow and Omega(and Knuckles), people that she can trust and hang out with as a unit, a team, her friends. Even Shadow trusts her after saving her life in Sonic Heroes and how she has his back the same as he does

@@jamestolbert1856 Archie isn't canon, and I'm not about to canonize the IDW comics. Is Rivals (I assume Rivals 2) really the game that delves into Rouge's depths, the same games almost no one talks about plot-wise, the same game Garrulous64 couldn't be bothered to even finish reviewing?

@DaYapGuy also I been a fan of Shadow and I understand what they were going for to try and have new fans and old fans come back to the series but the arcs that he went through in previous games already solved some of the problems Shadow faces in this game. I liked it but I hope they don't fuck it up like in IDW again
