It’s such a good visual moment, after Yolanda asks Todd out. He says “I’m actually asexual” and she affirms it and treats it as normal- she’s ace too- and as the camera pans away we see everyone wearing Todd’s outfit. In the text because of the Sharc Jacob’s show, but metatextually because for the first time in Todd’s dating life he fits in, he’s “normal” he’s just a guy getting casually asked out at a diner. It’s such a good moment.

Something I didn’t realize till watching this. Once Todd is with Maude, he stops falling ass-backwards into things (like accidentally becoming president of sales at a major company), but started taking deliberate steps to progress his life, both personally and professionally. He may have already been a nanny, but with her support, he stopped couch surfing and got an apartment, and started a daycare center, then reconnected with his estranged mom. (While having wacky misadventures with her along the way). Truly a beautiful thing to watch.

What I appreciate about Todd as ace rep is that it isn't entirely played for laughs. Todd is established as a goofball first, and THEN we see him grow and discover himself. His orientation isn't a joke in and of itself. Sure there are gags that incorporate it, but it's overall treated fairly and respectfully, rather than being a running will-they-won't-they gag with various partners, which a less thoughtful series might have done to over-commit to Todd being comic relief. I also appreciate that, even if brief, the writing touches on both sex-positive and sex-averse aces, because it is its own little spectrum within the asexual identity.

Idk why, but I started crying at the scene Todd was trying to explain to Emily his sexuality, "I think I might be nothing." I love the ace representation in Bojack, and I love we got to go on Todd's ace journey with him.

Oh my friend, I hope you don't still see it that way. I'm an asexual guy, and I'm telling you -- we're the best out there. ;) We're pure and clear of thought. We don't get corrupted by sexual innuendo. We don't get persuaded by hook-up culture or any of that nonsense. We can see things for how they really are. We're really the special ones. My wife is ace too, and we give each other that amazing Disney PG romance they write stories and poems about. The kind of romance people sing about. Sexual urges don't distract from our devotions as partners. It doesn't distract from what we can accomplish as a team with our own adventures and ambitions. What you have to offer a partner and the world is your ambition. Your indomitable spirit! You're not distracted by sex, so you're free to focus on being creative. Being passionate. Building and sharing all the things that make you special with the world.

If the show had continued, I wonder what Emily would have thought of Maude. On the one hand, Emily would have been happy that her best friend is dating someone who is both ace and truly gets him. This is my personal experience so, anecdotally: I have a close guy friend who got married a bit over a year ago now. I understand and accepted that broadly speaking, his wife will have priority over me. He's in a new phase of his life after all. In a way, maybe she did 'replace me' - but I also kinda expected or assume your spouse IS your best friend. He's happy, so I'm happy for him. Our time together is a bit less than usual, but the QUALITY of the time we do have hasn't changed and I think that's what matters by the end of the day. I think Emily would feel similarly with how supportive she's been of Todd and how easy they've always been in-sync with each other.
@greekgeek8284Ай бұрын
Todd and Emily are overall very communicative, and even if there’s that particularly rough patch surrounding the Bojack situation, that’s not where Todd and Emily ultimately land (or Todd and Bojack for that matter, but that’s another topic) so while it’s not implausible Emily would have reservations at first, by that point in the story they would probably be able to talk through it fairly well

It’s so rare to see asexuality explored at all in media, but even rarer for that to be an ace who’s s3x repulsed. I can’t relate at all with ppl who can feel any sexual attraction so it was extremely helpful to me to see Todd’s story unravel. I relate heavily too him, and I wish there was a dating app for asexual ppl. The allosexual spectrum is so vast and wide, and finding another person with literally no sexuality is extremely difficult, I have yet to even meet another asexual person in my life. Many of those on the allo spectrum (demi, greys, etc) though but i cant relate to them..
@etherealgalaxies6Ай бұрын
I always find it so interesting that people cannot feel sexual attraction lol. Like not even self pleasure at all? Is it just the act of sex that repulses most aces? Biology would have you believe that humans are naturally sexual so when there are people who are not it's almost kind of...odd. No offense or anything 😊
@alchemistghost8329Ай бұрын
As an ace with absolutely 0 interest in ever having sex yeah its part of why I've been kind of reluctant to put myself out there for dating, I live in a rural community so my odds of finding another ace person or just someone who would be okay with me not being down for that kind of stuff who I would click with romantically feels low. But even with that idk having a character like Todd does help because I see parts of myself in him and he's helped people learn more about asexuality. I'm just really happy Todd exists and gets to be happy with a loving partner
@wildfire0123Ай бұрын
@@etherealgalaxies6well as somebody who is asexual it’s a spectrum. Asexuality is it’s own thing but it falls along a spectrum known as aspecs. These can be asexuality, demisexuality, cupiosexuality. Lithosexuality. Those all fall under aspec. But for asexual people themselves there’s also a spectrum. See asexuality just means lack of sexual feelings and not lack of pleasure since libido doesn’t equal pleasure since sexual pleasure is caused by a mix of hormones, chemicals and dopamine going off in your brain which asexual people do have. And asexual’s views on having sex themselves can differ greatly. Some aces just like to self pleasure themselves and be done with it, some are completely disgusted with the idea like the commenter above me, some enjoy having sex with others just because of the intimacy of it or just because of how it makes them feel. Personally i’m indifferent, it’s not something i would seek out for myself but if my partner wants to i’m open. So being ace is not really a one size fits all label, every ace person is different.
@nauscakes1868Ай бұрын
@@etherealgalaxies6 The best way I've ever described is like hunger. Just imagine you never feel hungry. Or you never have to pee. As an asexual person, it just feels like I dodged a bullet. I missed a shackle to some strange urge. Because if I'm being honest, if I could push a button, never feel hungry, never have to eat. I would push that button. Eating just feels like a waste of time, but I do it because it's the healthy thing to do. Asexuality can be complicated, because there's a lot of little sub genres within the group, and sometimes that gets confusing. For example, I'm a very simple asexual guy. I don't feel hungry. I don't get those sexual urges. But I'm not repulsed. And I'm not against romance. My wife and I have a very PG Disney romantic relationship. I've had a lot of people ask me "how can aces have a relationship? Isn't that just a friendship?" Like no man, it's like a Disney Romance. Think of the way Flynn Rider and Rapunzel interact with each other. It's not sexual, but it's not a 'friendship' either. That's romance. It's like a much deeper version of friendship, and both people are devoted to each other. So that's how I am, but there's also other types of aces. So you got non-sexual and non-romantic aces, which are called Aromantic Asexuals. They don't feel romance. The most common example of this in pop culture is Sheldon Cooper. But realistically you can use a lot of pop culture characters. Like maybe Chell from the Portal series or Chewbacca from Star Wars. There's a LOT of characters in media that just don't feel romance and don't feel sexual desire. I don't think they're written asexual. The writers just forget to flesh out their development, lol. But in practice -- it's basically the same thing. I think Ahsoka might fall into that too? I don't follow her lore. But I don't think she's romantic or sexual. And finally another big group of asexual people are the sex-repulsive people. Now this will be a controversial take, and don't repeat it to aces trying to fit in. They'll get mad, lol. And I'm only saying it, because I've spent so much time in the culture. A LOT of sex repulsed aces become that way from sexual trauma and abuse. So to explore sexuality for them is traumatic, and they become repulsed. But you would never want to mention that to someone, because it can come off as offending. But if it helps understand it better. Think of repulsion as a trauma response. Could they heal out of it? It's very possible, and some do. But that's not for us to figure out. That's their lives. They'll worry about it. NEVER date an asexual person thinking you can fix them. -- Oh, I forgot another group. Demisexual. Which is basically people who don't feel any sexual desires unless they form a strong emotional bond with the person first. The best way I can explain this from my perspective is think of how men can look at random women and think "she's hot." A demisexual person wouldn't recognize that feeling at all unless they had an emotional bond with the person, and only then could they recognize attraction. It's kinda like how if you look at random faces you might not feel anything, but if you think of a crush or beloved character, the emotional connection opens up deeper levels of attraction. Demisexual people literally cannot feel attraction unless they have an emotional connection. In practice, this can make them sexual within an emotionally secure relationship. The would never have sex for fun. But they could date for months, and if they really love someone, they can play ball. And I think it's ok for sexual people to date demisexual people, but you wouldn't get sex at all until you guys were basically ready to get married. The emotional connection and devotion has to be there. There is no casual sex for a demi.

Todd means the world to me as an ace aro, and I think his explanation of the fact that asexuality and aromanticism aren't mutually exclusive is not only the first time I've seen aromanticism mentioned in a show period, but a pretty good and simple one for people who may have never even heard these terms before. And I really liked that they talked about how some asexuals are sex favorable and sex repulsed, though there is also sex indifferent but they didn't exactly have time for that. I myself am sex repulsed like Todd, but it's nice to talk about the idea that some asexuals are indifferent to or even down for sex in their relationships. It's important to talk about different experiences in a label that's as fluid as asexuality and/or aromanticism because it helps people who may also be discovering themselves to know that this is normal and they're not broken, nor is there something wrong with them for feeling this way.

Honestly, it’s quite amazing how many attractions people feel that are not inherently sexual in nature. Like, I discussed this all with a friend who is bisexual (sexually attracted to men and women) but only romantically attracted to men. We both joke we are “functionally straight” to people on the outside, but it’s crazy how many nuances go into what pulls one to another.

The confusing feeling of everyone else having all these feelings so effortlessly while you don’t is really well captured with Todd. I’m on the demisexual side of the asexual spectrum so I technically can experience sexual attraction but the metrics to unlock it are so difficult to hit that for most of my life I’ve never had it. It’s incredibly frustrating to know that there is this feeling that people who like you want you to have that you don’t have and maybe can’t have because of something that is outside your control.

as an asexual person I really appreciate Todd and how they portrayed his sexuality! It was very similar to my journey as well and I've had quite a few people question whether my sexuality is "valid" or not. I'm asexual and not comfortable with anything sexual - just like Todd - and while I acknowledge that some ace people do enjoy intercourse that's just not me, again just like Todd. I've had to break up with people romantically because we didn't have the same needs or couldn't help the other meet those needs just like Todd and Emily - I'm actually still great friends with that same person I had to break up with due to our different needs and desires regarding our relationship. At first I thought something was wrong with me because I wasn't as "mature" as my friends and peers (really I just didn't wanna do the horizontal mambo or do anything beyond pecking kisses) but I'm so glad that, after much introspection and discussions, I have come to accept myself and I'm so happy Todd has too.

One thing about asexual characters in media is they often fall into two categories. Either they’re completely emotionless robots or they’re totally childish. I love the way Bojack Horseman subverts this stereotype by showing Todd’s self discovery as a catalyst for his growth and maturation. The more Todd finds himself, the more he matures. He’s still a fun and carefree guy, but he has a better grasp on himself and his direction in life. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s one of three in the main cast to end up in a healthy relationship at a stable point in his life, something he feared because of his sexuality that ultimately ended up becoming a reality when he embraced it and found someone that matched his needs. I think they easily could have played Todd’s asexuality for laughs or squeezed him into narrow boxes that stem from limited understanding about asexuality, but they didn’t. They made a genuine effort to present Todd’s struggles with his sexuality as equal to the various paths other characters take in their individual journeys. They share different perspectives, challenges, advantages, and experiences that asexuality offers. I also think Todd literally going to an asexual meetup and learning with the audience was the perfect way to do that, because it also broke the stereotype by having miscellaneous side characters who are completely normal non-wacky people also be asexual.

God, I'm sure this comment will get lost to the sea of other comments. I just needed to say that I absolutely enjoy watching these vids while I smoke. I love hearing what you have to say and it's usually about a topic I enjoyed/was obsessed with at some point. Great vid like usual, hope you're having a great day/night dude

Im actually glad they not only spoke about asexuality but also the different types because the hardest part of learning I was ace was the spectrum

I keep hoping I see a video on Bojack fall out with Hollyhock. The show barely touches on their sibling fallout but I'd like to see an in-depth analysis of it.

Regarding the situation where Emily and Todd almost attempted sex as teens and Jonny makes the point of how Todd making an attempt with someone he cares for and trusts might have helped, it’s also very clear that if they had tried and Todd was like “I don’t really like this actually?” Emily totally would have asked questions to understand and not to argue, and though it’s possible she didn’t have the terminology to give him as a teen like she would later on as an adult, she probably would have believed him when he said he liked and respected her as a person and enjoyed spending time with her, but didn’t enjoy sex itself, and not judged him for it. As useful as labels can sometimes be, I certainly think, as someone who uses labels, that something like that would have been more…”self-educational” for lack of a better term? Than having access to a specific label, and based on Todd’s initial reaction to being called asexual early on in his self-acceptance journey as an adult, I definitely think he would’ve found an attempt with Emily that ended in communication more helpful and grounding at that point in his life than just having a word

Also, just in general, if you’re unsure about your sexuality and there’s someone in your life who you really trust and respect and feel trusted and respected by in turn, then as long as you’re using protection and communicating before, during, AND after, experimenting with each other COULD potentially be a safe and enjoyable way to discover things about yourself* *look man no advice is gonna be universally applicable, context matters, talk to people and do research, but don’t be ashamed of your sexuality or refuse to engage with the concept altogether, I beg of you

As an asexual person, I really related to Todd's aspect of needing things spelled out for him cuz some things just doesn't click right away (I'm also neurodivergent though so that probably adds to it). Even now, I had a conversation with some friends about their Cyberpunk RED TTRPG game literally the other day and how one of them made a food idea called "Johnny Silvercakes" and my first thought was "oh, silver cupcakes!" No, it was pancake in the shape of Johnny's ass. Growing up, people often said i was a "innocent" or "sheltered" and I like that those things weren't ever said to Todd. He's not being brushed off or dismissed for being like this and I really liked seeing that. I also like that the show addressed that some asexuals do have sex (I'm one of them), which I think is great reflection of Emily as a character in terms of her dedication and thorough research and the show gets to address the fact it's a spectrum.

genuinely it's so good hearing a character say "i am asexual" rather than just being relegated to subtext. and it's so good to see other characters still treating him as 'todd'. it's so easy to feel broken or less-than when you're not allosexual or alloromantic- so much of many cultures is so heavily focused around "finding the one" but... that's just not something we all want or need to be happy
