Yeah, the main issue here is just transparency. Art's done a lot to help promote the scene over the years, and I don't think most people would've really minded if he always said outright that he was taking a cut to cover expenses/time spent. Doing it without saying anything is for sure going to rub people the wrong way though if that's what happened. I wanna give him the benefit of the doubt 'cause he's always been a good dude anytime I've interacted with him, but the loss of community trust is something that's gonna be hard for him to get back whether he's guilty or not.

i think it was publicly stated (at least in some tournaments) that art was being paid for his work via a fraction of the matcherino. certainly TOs knew about that and acquiesced. but i agree it wasn't publicly, clearly, obviously stated enough. but it was at least stated to some extent at certain points in time. i think the contrast can be seen in the clarity over the percentage of the matcherino from NLBC online being used to keep Next Level open-because spooky always made it 100% clear, several times throughout every tournament, that a percentage of the funds generated was going to keeping Next Level alive during the pandemic. i believe art is innocent of stealing, but perhaps guilty of having poor communication skills.

The whole point of Matcherino was to prevent things like this from happening. Regardless of whatever Art's reasons for not paying on time, it's not a justification for breaking the agreement that the players are entitled to those payments in the timeframe outlined. Those prize pools are not an interest-free emergency fund loan to the TO. If he used them to get through a tough time with his family's health, that's a mismanagement of funds at the very least. There was no agreement between the players that Art would be allowed to skim whatever he deemed fit as an expense to take off the top. I get that Art is a legend, but considering how a 1st-year TO would be treated, he is abusing that status to fuck with other people's money. He is not the only person in the FGC with problems and family that could use those funds.

As others have stated it's mostly an issue of transparency. Arturo deserves to get paid for his work, just needs to be done above board. Matcherino is NOT innocent here. Within the FGC itself people mostly acknowledged that people within Matcherino had to be aware of what was going on. It looks extremely shady how hard they went after him specifically. Almost to draw attention away from them.

I have never been wanting off of it. As I said, I don't fault anyone wanting to get it right than get it fast. One thing to be careful of is this. Fighting games are VERY social games, part of the comminty's embrace of twitter (and facebook/Gram, Tiktok) is to the need to communicate but NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING, replaces showing up at a local and giving it your all. You can be an online monster all you want but these locals and regional's, they are VERY important... do try to get out to one.

Basically Matcherino mismanaged finances and we're paying players through Arts personal PayPal which they knew they shouldn't have done but are so incompetent they had to. While not paying him and striking some vague agreement that he would get a percentage of the pots. Basically agreements that should never be made without rules and contracts and exact bookkeeping done not by a tournament organizer who's a competer himself. Basically they wanted him to do all this work, keep track of his own pay, and keep track of the payouts to players. There is literally no one person can do all that without any discrepancies. Matcherino should never have even put money in his personal account expecting him to do literally what they are supposed to do.

As being a member of the FGC before the FGC existed. I've known Art for almost 30 years, he's a great guy. Putting that aside, There is an entire history about fighting game tournaments and the whole issue with prize pools and how they would be divvied. There were no Venue fees when we first started gaming here on the EC (mid-ish 90's) ( I cannot speak for the WC and how they ran things-sunnyvale golfland). Out here we would usually hit 8 on the break arcade in North Jersey and flood the facility and have fun. The owner would freely let us use their arcade and allow us to keep the prize pools for ourselves to be divided amongst all winning participants; Usually a 70/20/10 split. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this ( but I'm fairly certain I'm not). One particular tournament the Arcade Owner felt a need to take a portion of the entries as a "FEE" for using their facilities, justifiable so (in hindsight only), but at that time the entire WC delegate was ready to walk out and leave the tournament. At that time the WC dominated the EC, so it was in their best interest to fight for the right to 100% of the entry fees. There was a meeting behind closed doors that resolved it ( I do not know the specifics of the agreement but the WC team decided to stay.). Shortly after this Venue fees slowly started to pop up. That was the beginning of the Venue fees, or the end of "free" tournaments. Just another FYI, NJ was the location for top SF players then. NY had a very small contingent during the SF infancy (early-mid 90s-- pre Eddie Lee days). Virginia was also pretty strong probably in A2 and 1st in ST. But NJ had the numbers, Philly did as well but it was not competitive on an organized front. A few of the New England states had a scattering of players as well. Like mentioned here, transparency is the key! We have to remember its not your money, their money, its "NOT our" money, and we must treat it as such. I was audited once by a lawyer at my business, he asked for receipts, I gave them to him no questions asked, my books matched. I had to be as up front as I possibly could. There needs to be a very up front way to handle other peoples funds. There should be no ambiguity with other peoples money. Going forward we need to learn a lesson from this. Keep track of everything you spend! Keep Receipts! Its the digital age, it should be easy, but also keep a paper trail, it may just come in handy!

I think a lot of FGC heads like myself are staying quiet and reserving judgment. If anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, it's Art for putting the scene on his back for so long. This all does look sketchy, but given how poverty the FGC is, its VERY EASY to imagine scenarios where he would have to hold money to pay players. Foreign players come through all the time, domestic players that are too lazy to create a matcherino account before they win some money, running so many events you forget to post your cut on several pages, etc. FGC is so poverty in general that it is really easy to imagine there being regular scenarios where everyone involved doesn't have their ducks in a row on time and Art would have to to hold some of that money. Fighting game tournaments are a niche within a niche within a niche for Sony and a specific company that is facilitating that is an even smaller niche. I highly doubt that Matcherino is even on Sony's radar, let alone that Sony is actively pressuring Matcherino because of Art's PC tourneys. Sony only invested in Evo because its the one big fgc event that gets real sponsors and eyeballs. I doubt they would care at all if other tournaments shifted to PC. It's not even that big of an issue for tourney players. Just play on PS exclusively for a month or two running up to Evo to get used to the platform. I also only half agree with point 1. I think Arts hardship factored into it, but I'm guessing that they are trying to "clean house" because they are negotiating bigger deals with bigger companies. Art's role is clearly embarrassing for them since he is basically the face of their company while being an unpaid employee while also shifting money around. It doesn't matter if he is shifting that money to make up for their own poor functionality or out of necessity given the disorganized nature of the FGC. In fact if he really was only doing it for those reasons and not to steal money, it makes them look EVEN WORSE.

My concern here is that this is a nebulous situation that kicked off in the public eye with on Matcherino banning Arturo. If Matcherino does do an investigation now and finds him innocent, that could make them look bad. What I'm afraid of is that no matter what they find, the best course of action for them as a company seems to be to say Arturo is guilty, regardless of if it's true or not.

He was banned for not giving payouts on time, which he admitted he did. Matcherino was right in that judgement. I do agree that because of this ban, the social perception of Arturo worsened beyond the scope of the reason he was banned. However, that is a by product of a highly social community and not a factor that Matcherino could have controlled. They need to ban rule breakers or else they lose credibility, they also need to publicly declare non-affiliation as part of security.

Man Art has done sooooooooo much good for the FGC. He deserves mad respect. If he’s done wrong then hopefully he makes amends, says his apologizes and learns. Tournament organizers deserve a cut. When Art takes a cut he says so on stream. Maybe he missed one time? I doubt it. But it can happen, since it's been thousands of individual tournaments. We hadn't even heard any serious complaints till Matcherino "fired" him. This is more of a witch hunt where people are looking for a mistake, rather than an actual problem where things need to be fixed. Nobody was asking about all of the fine print, they were too busy playing fighting games and getting paid out. It's been what? 5 years now and now after all of this time, people want to know how things work behind the scenes? If Art didn't have to take a break to spend time in the hospital we wouldn't even be talking about this; that's some food for thought.

If people can set a cut they take via the Matcherino website, then there is no need to inform anyone because he "MENTIONED" it by adding his cut to the Matcherino settings. If he took a cut from someones "winning prize" then yes, it is stealing, if the money was taken based on the cut set in Matcherino then your logic is false. Sounds like the people need to TURN there ATENTION to MATCHERINO..... Companies like to stay quiet when they want people to get over the Situation, why ? because of Matcherino's Interest.
