@@mikegrant8490 I don't get how he's broke if he's been working for so long. I read an article on CNBC that the average American spends more and never saves. Yet prior to my first job, I never worked. So I worked for almost two years and my company closed months before COVID-19 due to financial troubles. So I got unemployment for first time and with the pandemic, I saved a ton of money from my job. Now got job opportunities since. Doing all I can but at least I started investing in CDs, Stock Market and Index Funds. I can work but I love math and numbers to make me rich. Not that I want to. I rather take an ok salary, or small paycut just to get 3-4 weeks of vacation + better benefits. At least I get better work/life balance.

"There's no upward mobility anymore." This is true. A study was done to evaluate upward mobility in each country. The top countries were what U.S. republicans would consider "socialist": Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland.... The United States was ranked 27th!!! In other words, 26 other countries are better at the "American Dream" than America. visualcapitalist.com/ranked-the-social-mobility-of-82-countries/

I've been having a horrible time trying to re-enter the workforce. Employers complain that nobody wants to work anymore and they so desperately need help, but they still want only the most magically perfect people possible, they still make applicants jump through all sorts of hoops to prove their worthiness, they refuse to return calls with questions about the qualifications or materials they want. "No one wants to work anymore" is starting to sound a lot like "why aren't unicorns magically appearing out of thin air to happily let us exploit them for their labor?"

Our government instituted increased wages for healthcare workers during the pandemic...and then they removed it. Some retailers /restaurants did it for their employees, but then they removed it. I have worked in the service industry, it was a joke before with shitty customers, scummy owners cutting corners or stealing tips and ZERO fucks given by local governments. I wish I could say I would be supporting local businesses, but I'm trying my damn near hardest NOT to. Buy local? How about they and the customers treat the workers with more respect. Working in the service industry before the pandemic I have told customers to fuck off before. If I had to work in it now (I'm a healthcare worker), I would tell them to fuck off at the slightest thing now.

had to explain to my mom how fucked it was that she was so upset about how people she knew weren't back at work because they got so much more money from stimulus checks and some of the extra unemployment or whatever. she was complaining that the stim checks were keeping people from returning to work because they made more money from those than their job... I told her that if the grand total of like $3,600 or whatever that her and her friends all got was such a significant amount of money that it was more than their wages, then that right there was the problem- being paid dogshit lol. if three grand over the course of like 18 months was such a big deal for somebody, there are bigger problems than people getting "handouts."

Correction. No one wants to work FOR YOU anymore. All those years being told that their jobs weren't important, and the pandemic gave a good opportunity for service workers to leave for something better. That is what happened with me and my coworkers, we got to the point where we all realized that we could finally make the jump to something that actually pays decent, so 90% of us just got up and left. The company panicked, but who cares. I mean isn't that what people have been complaining about for the last decade? "If you don't like your job, get a new one." Now the same people who used to bad mouth us and say we weren't important to the economy want to complain that we aren't there to make them burgers anymore. If they are so obsessed with somebody to cook their food for them, why don't they just automate everything with robots, just like they used to threaten us with when we asked for higher wages and better working conditions? Either that or you can get off your ass and go cook your own burger. It's remarkable how Americans don't understand that if they treat people like shit for long enough, there are consequences, and no one will want to help them out.

I am a small business owner. For the most part, even small business owners can afford to pay their employees livable wages. They may not be able to provide an upper middle class lifestyle, but they can provide a livable income. It depends on management of business finances and how much the business owners pay themselves. Either the owner can dramatically hike pay OR moderately increase pay and agree to cover 100% of health/dental/vision. Trust me, it's doable. Owners receive all types of deductions and allowances and credits for taking care of their employees. If my company experiences net profit (gross revenue - expenses - COGS), of say, $2,000,000 per year, I pay myself out of that. . . .usually 33%. That's $660,000 per year. I am more than fine with paying myself a salary of $660,000 per year. In fact, I'll take some of my salary and just hand cash or cut personal checks to my employees just because. How many mansions do I need? Why do I need more than one? Why do I even need one? Why do I need 10 cars and a private jet?

Cut grass. At least, you'll be your own boss, you'll be out in fresh air, get plenty of exercise, you'll provide a service to people who don't want to cut their own grass for any variety of reasons and if you hustle you can make an honest living. $50,000 a year is a reasonable expectation for a full service year around lawn business. Spring and fall cleanups, leaf removal, seeding, pruning and trimming shrubbery, whatever the customer wants and you feel you can do.. even mundane roof gutter cleaning is worth the extra charge for a happy client. Start small, get bigger as you build clientele. You'll stay busy. You'll learn skills. You'll learn how to maintain your equipment. You'll learn how to estimate to make the best money for fair work. It's an honest way to own a small business AND if you build it right, you can always sell it, the equipment and the clients, to someone else, take the money and start another one.

There was a major cultural shift once corporate takeover of local economies accelerated. Before you had store owners that were also members of the community, the system was in no way perfect, but there were social repercussions (remember walls of shame?) and owners would straight up just kick you out if you were psycho in many instances. Starbucks, Target, etc all changed that and customers caught on, to get what you want you act like a belligerent toddler and none of the employees have the power to do anything, if they did corporate will side with the customer and they will likely lose their jobs or face negative consequences. This drastically altered the social norms concerning the power dynamic between employee and customer.
