I'm 14. I'm planning on applying for a job at McDonald's later this summer. With McDonald's current pay, I would be making more money than my dad does. I asked him why he sticks with his current job instead of getting an easier, slightly better paying one and he said it's because the job he has allows him to take mental health days and if he tries to get a job somewhere else he'd probably lose it. We are at a point where people have to get by with low paying shitty jobs just so they have the ability to take days off to better our mental state. The people running the country and all these big corporations are so out of touch they don't see their workers as people with feelings, but instead as servants who make their money for them. I can only hope that this will be fixed in my lifetime, but it probably won't be

It should be "people don't want to be slaves anymore! " Instead of "people don't want to work anymore" Many people, particularly the younger generation, use a range of unconventional methods of earning a living these days. I worked in the retail for over 10 years, so l'm quite happy that this is taking place. For too long, retail bullied me and a lot of my employees/colleagues saying things like "if you don't like it,go; another like you is waiting to get into your position " since the COVID, I found a job that helps me grow, pays me more and Values Me Social media cleared the way for a rapidly expanding market, and it taught us a lot. 2020 was my turning point, and investment helped alot!

Last fall, there were a few times where I couldn't make it into work because of allergies and disease, and I didn't want to risk getting my coworkers or anyone else sick. So, I told my manager about the situation, and each time she responded telling me to bring a doctor's note. I explained that I couldn't bring a doctor's note because I can't get to a clinic. She told me to find someone to cover me, which I tried, but nobody could. Later the next week, I check my stubs and see I hadn't even been paid for the hours I had worked during the period. I confronted the manager about it, and it seemed like she basically just brushed it off. I don't care that I'm under 17, but this job isn't worth minimum wage

It all boils down to a tax haven loophole they've found, where they basically start a generic corporation in a lower tax country and transfer all profits they earn from the main business to said generic corporation under the guise of a "contracted payment", since they are officially completely different "entities" but still owned by the same executive. And since the main business can't be taxed without profits and don't have to make mandatory reports of their capital flow to the national tax agency, they get away scot-free. And they'll keep doing it indefinitely as long as nobody forces the rules to change, showing just how easily their unregulated capitalism can be exploited. It's a system designed by rich people for rich people.

I have a brother who is very pro child labor. His reasoning on why a 12-14 year old should be working is so they learn discipline, are "responsible with money", and can move out by the time they're 18. He firmly believes as long as a child isn't working in a factory or a coalmine, then the job is for them. This is why I hate the work culture in the USA. Kids should be kids, not underpaid farm hands, McDonald's workers, or meatpackers.

Maybe there should be a middle thing, where teens can have apprenticeships and get some experience with working, but not spend nearly as much time there as an adult would. Kids should have time to play, but I can see too abrupt transition to adulthood may be a problem too. The companies should still have to hire mostly adult people and pay them proper wages, as well as having reasonable work hours and working conditions. Especially if there are also many people going unemployed they should have to hire adult people first. Only time I think child labor (that takes up a good part of their time) is acceptable, would be if the overall society seriously lack workforce, and its not the fault of the employees for terrible worker treatment

I hate this subreddit because it just reaffirms my fears of going into the work business. I’m a 24 autistic woman with GAD and depression in NYC and I have spent the last 7 years mentally preparing to get a job. I’m only just NOW confident in getting one because I need the money… and even then, I’m only doing it because I HAVE to if I want to survive. I’ve talked extensively about this with my therapist, and she told me that in order to survive I have to adapt, and if I can’t adapt then I’ll get sicker. Despite this, I understand that this is for my own good, but I still absolutely abhor what capitalism is doing to this country. My older sister has gotten a plethora of jobs since I was what, 12? And I’ve been a witness to how cruel and demanding having an occupation is like. I told my therapist that I didn’t want to be another cog in the system. I still don’t. This isn’t work, it’s slavery. But it’s do or die at this point because without money I can’t even invite my friends over to watch a movie (subscription services cost money, btw!) and feed them snacks and lunch on my behalf. Like, I can’t even enjoy life without money. But with a job I still sort of can’t unless by some miracle I get an occupation that actually gives a shit about it’s workers. Call me lazy or “political”, I do not care. The work industry is absolutely garbage. And I’m in the USA… My heart breaks for third world countries where labor is costing them pennies or worse. Everything is fucked.

God I feel you. Autistic with PDA here. Can't work, the stress actually kills me. I've gotten very good at stretching the resources I have out, but it's like I'm an animal in an ever-shrinking cage. I don't want to work in the same way people don't want to get stabbed, not for a single day much less the majority of my life until I'm too old and broken to enjoy my (supposed) savings. There was a point in my life where I became suicidal due to only being able to see misery in my future and present. However, knowing that there are indeed people out there who feel similarly - that it isn't all boomers clinging to their sunk cost fallacy and shaming others less fortunate than them - that gives me hope that eventually things will change and that I might get to see that change.

My stepmother hired a person to do a simple rather elegant white dress for her for about $400 since everything at the bridal shops was so expensive and too ornate for her tastes, and she's like 5'2" and 300lbs... plus size selection was just not there. My mother had us wear nice clothes when she remarried while we went to sign witness papers at city hall and they spent the money their "wedding" costs on the honeymoon instead. A weekend at a hotel down at the shore. (not more than an hour or two from home.) The idea of a wedding costing more than I make in a year is insane.

I started violently throwing up one time and asked to go home because I could barely stand. My boss handed me a trash can and told me to keep cleaning, and refused to let me get my phone to call for a ride (we weren't allowed to have phones on us). Boss told me once I was rude for being upset that my grandmother was in the hospital, with the possibility that she wouldn't be coming home. Worse, I was not assigned a permanent cube, I got a "mobility" slot... the "desk" was really a hutch, with my back to a main aisle (I was working on a government contract, which required a security clearance, so people could conveniently look over my shoulder and see classified materials). My station had two monitors - HP makes some nice monitors, but these were not those; 1600x900 screens, and one had a permanent purple tint. OK, what about keyboard and mouse? Well, no mouse (at least I did bring one), but what's this? A Wireless keyboard? Nope, it was a USB keyboard with the cord ripped out. Sigh.... I got myself another job a few more miles down the road, for a LOT more pay. My work from home office has dual 1440p monitors just for my work laptop. When the rich push things too far, one or more of three things happens: 1) The economy collapses and the rich become a lot less rich, 2) The government realizes things are out of hand and makes massive reforms, or 3) Violence. We don't just have to worry about working until we die. We also have to worry about being forced to retire when we can't afford to retire either. My dad got a new position as a manager of an airport radar control building around 10 or so years ago. We all moved as a family and after the second year my dad was forced to take an early retirement from his upper management or have his contract forcefully terminated. I was told that the company was removing lots of older people in management positions to make room for younger managers who could come up with "newer" innovations so to speak. My dad was only in his mid-50's when they forced him into retirement and due to a knee injury he received from his job (falling off the manual airlift ramps) and his age, no one else would hire him, thus my mother had to work far longer to make up the difference and I decided to double-down on going back to college to get a new career to help my family as we still had a fresh new mortgage to pay for on the house since we moved. I ended up both working part-time while studying, managed to graduate with honors and start working both a full time and part-time job (bouncing from about three new full-time jobs due to economy and my part-time job closing after 3 years due to upper management being found of embezzlement and owing money). In the end, my dad died at 60 before he could collect his old-age pension, my mom got injured after falling out of an uneven elevator and is too old to work while fighting the government for her old age pension plan and money my dad had left behind (he thought that far into the future so we aren't hurting as much), and I am now working at a job making less than living but slightly more than minimum wage while trying to pay off a mortgage on my own condo which I was only able get with the inheritance left behind by my father while wondering if I am going to have to work until my body no longer functions properly or if I will be forced into retirement once I hit a certain age... sometimes both.

For the foreigners who don’t know about the French people, it’s a people who refused to be governed by anybody, whoever is the President, whatever is the political party he/she is come from far-left to far-right and I give you an exemple why the French people refused to be governed, I know in Australia the retirement age have been pushed from 65 to 67 and there’s a very small amount of people who are against it but the majority of Australians are saying OK why not do to that for empowering and growing our country but when in France they decided to push it from 62 to 64, there’s 3 million people in streets who said NO and chanting “Macron démission” (eng: Macron resignation) in massives demonstrations.

Plus, the fact that the law was passed despite not having the required votes, through a antidemocratic process that was only meant to be used in war and terrorism contexts.

Unfortunately, the topic of work is bittersweet for me. I managed to get a decent job that is rather flexible, with good managers who actually try and be better, and focus primarily on: “Did you meet the expectations? Yes, then good.” Any exceptional work they praise, and us coming in on days previously considered off is the exception, not the norm. Even then they reserve it just for emergencies (like another manager getting into a car crash, and me being the person with the 2nd most experience could hold down the fort) But then there is the bad: 14 dollars an hour, and the sales process makes me feel like a disposable person when my performance is based on how well I can drive up the price on people, which taints the actual fun part about taking the photos that the people would want. TL;DR, even me, who got lucky, still wind up with a bittersweet relationship with my job. Fun work and good bosses, but not good pay nor requirements. I hope y’all have a fantastic day by the ay

You want to know something crazy? The main indicator that is used for inflation is prices. Basically, there's these things called the Consumer Price Index and the Producer Price Index. These are how the government measures inflation, by measuring the cost to be a consumer and the cost to be a producer and running that through an equation that gives you inflation. The problem here is that CPI is going up faster than PPI, when they should be going up at proportional rate. This is price gouging. The Federal Reserve has a website where you can look at the CPI and PPI separately, along with basically every statistic known to man. Go look, the proof is there.
@Roxor128

Sounds like the real index should be CPI minus PPI, and the goal should be to keep the result at zero.

I worked for Staples once. During that time, I caught the flu, so stayed home for a couple of days. When I went back in, one of the newer managers there took me aside and sat me down, then said to me, 'Next time, when maybe you're feeling sick, just come in anyway.' I said, 'So, if I have a contagious sickness that I can spread easily, I should come in, get everyone sick, then *everyone* wants to stay at home? Maybe come in and throw up on the floor, or pass out and get hurt, then sue the company?' He paused for a moment, and it seemed like some extremely rusty gears were starting to turn again. Then he goes, slowly, '....nah. No, don't do that.' then after a bit more, 'Ok, well in that case yeah, stay home.' I swear that place was brainwashing it's managers. The one manager we had that stood up for the employees over the other managers got ousted, and this new guy, after I jogged his brain a bit, started reading about how all this stuff he was being told was wrong, and eventually quit as well because he finally saw how f'ed up everything was at that store. Later, it was found that the managers there were all part of a theft ring, stealing things and selling them, or giving them away to family and friends. I worked in the back, and a return I had packaged up got ripped open. Come to find out it was one of the managers, mad that I was actually doing my job, and was taking something he might have wanted to steal.

I had the same thing with the next to last one at my last job. I was one of 10 people working the front desk at a hotel, and sometimes we wouldn't get our schedule until the day before the work week. Luckily I was full time with a pretty routine schedule, but most of my coworkers were part time and it really messed with people not knowing if they would be working the next day

As for the concept of super rich people not wanting to pay taxes... I read recently about a rich lady... don't remember which one, think it was a Kardashian... who claimed she owned a penthouse in New York City that she paid for every year, had people working for her to clean and maintain it weekly and keep stocked with food and other things *just in case*. She hadn't been to the place in YEARS and had FORGOTTEN SHE WAS PAYING FOR IT OR OWNED IT. Imagine being so rich you could afford a penthouse in NYC, along with all the maintenance and people to do the work, pay for it all, and NOT USE IT OR REMEMBER IT because it didn't even register as a blip on your radar. What is likely millions a year, tossed into the void without even registering with you. And yes these people RUN from taxes in a great country.

My dad worked at a GameStop for 10 years, was the manager and everything and was super friendly. All of his coworkers loved him, and he loved working with customers. GameStop fired him so that they could put someone else in his position to do the exact same thing but pay them like $10 less. Know what their excuse was? They had to keep the garbage bags in the back room until it was the day they were picked up because they had to share a dumpster with a couple other stores and there wasn’t enough room for everyone to have their garbage in the dumpster. This had been going on for years, the higher ups knew about it and were fine with it, but that was what they tried to explain firing him for. Note, this behavior didn’t change after my dad left, they were all still perfectly fine with it.

Posting the schedule 40 mins before the shifts has a simple solution under most union contracts: any job/shift with less than 24-hours notice is considered "last minute" or "ASAP" and is automatically billed at overtime rate (time and a half).

Another problem that i have noticed in America as an outsider and never been to America is that is the adjustment of minimum wage itself is in the hands of the poiticians instead of an economic council that adjust the minimum wage to the current inflation rate once and sometimes even twice a year like the rest of the world, meaning it's subject to lobbying by giant Corporations to keep the minimum wage as low as possible!

The changing schedule at last minute is so annoying. I work in customer service and once they changed my virtual training schedule (which was initially set in a different day) during my lunch break (the training was right after the break). So, I missed it and I had to do it on my own time. The best part, if you do anything outside your schedule (eg, you deal with customers when you're scheduled for something else), it will affect your attendance score.
