This is WHY I THINK nodes are better than layers. I tried my very best to show how convenient these guys are. I hope it helps. When it's all said and done it comes down to preference, but the more I work with Nodes, the more I like 'em.

The most efficient thing is that everything is done in Resolve. You don't have to port stuff out to other programs and port it back. You want to work on monographs, you do it on the Fusion page. You want to edit your sound design, you do it in on the Fairlight page. No need to port to After Effects or Audition. You have the edit and cut page to make other adjustments to your clips. This ability to do everything inside one program is a major time saver. Nodes are much easier to follow than layers. One look and you what is going on.

I bought a brand new computer a few months ago because Premier was crashing on my other computer and kept seeing that having a 1050Ti with only 16gb of ram was my issue with Premier. So I bought a new laptop with a 2080, 64GB of ram, and i9th gen and Premier STILL crashed. I swear Premier started crashing more in the last 1.5 years than it had ever crashed on me before. Downloaded Resolve, ended up liking it and bought the Studio and cancelled all of my Adobe subs. I really like that Resolve also utilizes my GPU a LOT more than Premier ever did. Keeps play back really smooth.

Resolve is basically Adobe premiere pro, after effects and audition all in one software.

One thing to add is that you can also group nodes together and collapse them to hide a lot of the complexity when looking at your full node graph. Just like you have 10 layers visible with all of the effects hidden in the layers, you could also put everything into 10 groups (or even less if you want) and hide all of the effects. Then you'd expand the groups as you need to work on something specific.

4:40 But at the beginning, we can use an adjustment layer and make two sliders, one for color and one for thickness. We parent the first ellipse layer's thickness and color property to this adjustment layer so that when we duplicate it, all the copies get their property value from the adjustment layer. Same here right about the time I was getting heavy into AE I made the switch to Fusion mainly because I'm a 3D animator and it handled multi pass rendering compositing better than AE. I still considered Fusion for 3D comps and AE for motion graphics but the more I learned Fusion in its entirety the more I realized I didn't need AE Fusion can do it all. I am so glad I don't have to deal with pre comps and the whole logic behind them anymore! Once you grasp nodes there's no turning back its so much simpler and more flexible

To be honest, there are ways to make changes automatic in layers too... for example, you can link a property to another layer... In this way, the thickness of the duplicated lines is the same as the original. Said so... Nodes are a lot cooler and once you understand the logic behind, flexible, than layers. Also, nodes can be reused forever as they are a bunch of instructions rather than an alteration of the original footage. I started using DaVinci resolve two days ago, and thanks to your tutorials I already managed to create a full animation with custom titles, colour correction and audio. Love it! Also... coming from Blender, the knowledge is extremely transferrable, and I like so much the fact that the two software work so well together.

In AE I can create a pre-comp and use that pre-comp in many other comps. Say I have text that needs to change across six comps - I change it the pre-comp and it changes in the six comps that contain that pre-comp. I don't see a way to do that in Fusion. What am I missing? I tried dragging a Fusion Composition into another Fusion Composition and it won't let me.

What I'm getting from your video is that, if one is comfortable with the Object Oriented concepts of _inheritance_ and _propagation,_ nodes allow for not only quick modification of base attributes, but the potential *reuse* of part or all of a comp in a completely different context, with a minimum of fuss.

You can do colors more efficient in after effects, the way you show in the video is most simple method, the problem is as you mentioned is that it is a pain in the ass to change something. Experienced ae user probably will take other routes to do this, like expression control to link multiple layers' color property to a single null object plays as a controller. Same thing applies to the matte applied to multiple layers, you can use advance techniques to achieve it, so it would be easier to change afterwards. For complicated MG animation I still recommend layer system over node system, it would be a nightmare for node system to do some of my big MG projects. Both system have their pros and cons, otherwise After Effects with its outdated layer system should be long gone.For compositing 3D animation though, I highly recommend node system.

Question: how would fusion handle this type of animation over 30 different compositions and 40 shots? Would this still work across a large mograph project? In AE, With one precomp or even master properties linked it’s one click to change color, or whatever. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around that for mograph work in fusion. Thanks Casey! ther is a node that is called Wirrles node that act as a node in a diffrent side of the node table. (you don't have to connect all of the nodes to a one mega giant graph, there are ways to make it more tidy) you just work on a diffrent side of the node table. you can group every composition so it collapses to one node untill you'll need it again. Or, while it is 'collapsed', you can put effects on it (connect to other nodes) as if it was one node.

I was sold on nodes the second I realized, after having dealt with AE comps with roughly 300 layers (most of which were duplicates of lower layers for effects like the circle in the video. Repeated lyrics, for example.), I could fit it all on my screen instead of having a scroll bar that goes for miles. I used to use pre-comps to save screen space so I could mentally keep track of dozens of layers for a short 10-15 second section of a video. I haven't had the chance to work with nodes and groups yet on my projects, but it feels like it will save me the mental capacity it cost me to keep track of layers over the duration of a video project.

The thing is, if you know what you want at the beginning, you wouldn't necessarily be going back and doing extra work, you could set up expressions or precomps as you go, or do a linked duplicate or point to a master control layer with controls effects. That comes with experience, for sure, but it's like you said with the nodes, a bit more work on the front end for more flexibility later. I understand the point and I think nodes are great once you know which effects to use to get the result, but I'm not sure you're giving AE a fair shake, here. Nice video, though!

But, management and clients change their minds. If you could always go into a project and never have to worry about changing anything, then layers wouldn't be as bad. But in my experience, the people requesting their projects want to change their minds quite a bit. I have also noticed Resolve renders all of my projects MUCH MUCH faster than Premiere or After Effects and is a decent bit smaller in file size but with the same quality. Premiere just doesn't seem to utilize GPU's very much. Resolve also has a MUCH smoother playback while scrubbing through timelines and watching playbacks during comps.

My day job is a software developer. UI work is never a give me the design, deliver it not changes. If you are working solo then yes. When you get into teams with feedback your workflow gets jacked in a hurry if it isn't designed to be changed. I can definitely respect from a programming aspect the superiority of nodes. Just starting to learn without the burden of knowledge you have I would much rather learn nodes as a beginners because I could follow what was going on. I was completely lost in layers of what was going on. Would be interesting to see if Davinci takes a lead with the hobbyists.

I never got far with After Effects. I'm totally sold on nodes. *SUGGESTION:* Make a video that shows us how to create node groups that are reusable. That would include how/where to store these building blocks, how to build this reusable block so it is easy to understand and how do document them so they are understandable to someone that has never used that block. As a retired programmer, I'm also interested in scripting for Resolve/Fusion, so anything about that would be helpful. Things like what kind of tasks are worth writing code to implement? Sometimes I find that node logic in fusion don't work as it needs. For example - why composition change size to foreground's resolution but not backgrounds? Why merge node a priori change resolution? This and other very weird and strange things stops me to say bye to layered composing system.

I have been using After Effects for over 15 years and I really want to learn how to use resolve/fusion so I can stop paying subscription fees and use a more stable program. I was very excited to see the title of this video because my brain does not understand nodes and I want to get a grasp on how they would work in a compositing setting. However less than 2 minutes into the video and you are explain how "this" node simply does "this" and "that" node simply does "that," and I already give up. I feel like I am so fast at after effects it will never be worth my time to become as proficient at another program. I am stuck. Thank's for trying, but as someone who creates art outside of the computer I don't think I will ever understand nodes. Layers just make sense. I can layer paint and different materials to create something in the real world, and I can do it in Adobe as well. If resolve could just create a workspace that uses layers but how they connect/work in the background is run by nodes and you could toggle the view back and forth I think they would get a lot of people migrating from Adobe. Hey@@CaseyFaris, I just watched that peanut butter jelly video, thanks for that explanation. I have always understood that nodes are a set of instructions. I've used your videos to help me colour correct in Resolve since you started posting videos and weren't on camera yet. For colour correcting, for me, it works fine, the flow chart aspect makes it easy to see what is happening to the shot and the order of effects. I think the problem for me is that when compositing I would rather just see the layers and carrot down on the effects to see what's going on. Having a huge flowchart looks kind of ugly to me and it feels like it was made by a computer programmer who wants to composite rather than a compositor telling a programmer what they want. It's like the difference between a Mac and a PC, most people are going to have a preference. I guess my preference is to have the layers. Which is a shame because I can see from your videos how the nodes can be powerful. But I rarely run into the scenarios where you show how nodes are "better." I know how powerful Resolve is for doing things like keying footage. I have even keyed entire 10 minute videos in Resolve and then re-imported the footage into After Effects for compositing when keylight crashed for a couple months. All programs use "nodes," a set of instructions to tell the program what to do. So like I said before, it would be so amazing if Resolve could create a interface that could toggle between the node flowchart and layers for someone like me. If someone was starting out now and asked me what program to use I would recommend Resolve, but I think am too far gone. Thanks Adobe ☹️. Anyhow... keep up the great work. I still watch your videos all the time even though I don't really use Resolve that much.

Casey, as a video editor/compositor as opposed to a motion graphics animator, I worked extensively with nodes back in the days of the Avid|DS (which had a node based workflow) and I loved the flexibility in which you could build composites and add effects to video layers using node trees. In DS though, the video still lived in tracks that could be shifted and manipulated on a layered timeline within the composite tool. Where I am having a lot of trouble making the shift from AFX to Resolve is there doesn't seem to be any easy way to edit video tracks within Fusion, say as you are adding more layers of video, and slipping, cutting and changing the timing of in and out points of said layers against one another. What's the best workflow for working with multiple layers video within Fusion? Does it all have to be done within the Edit page and then toggling back and forth? Thanks for your tutorials!

i love nodes in Houdini and i want to transfer some compositing stuff from Ae to Fusion. but in AE only junior animate and make motion graphics withuot PRECOMP. I'm not saying that the layers are better, surely you have to exit and enter the comp. but between precomp and script it is not the supreme evil :)

Ome question i was left with on the after effects side /yes I know komplitly missing the point of the video but og well) Cant yo define a vareaple for the stroke color and just reference that whenever you need that color, that would avoid you having to change tinges in multiple places. Ok it would also add another object (possibly hidden in a dialog somewhere), but at any rate the video llleft me with the feeling that either Adobe is missing an easy trick to make changes more manageable or that you purposely constructed the example to make nodes look easier (well in my brain they are bit other peoples mileage may vary). Or i might ofc be wrong on both accounts in which case I would appreciate a correction

Hey Casey, late to the party but I couldn’t bite my tongue here. As a long-time Fusion and Houdini user I completely agree with the power of nodes over layers on a myriad of occasions. BUT as an open-minded motion graphics artist who has been trying to ditch Adobe around three times in the past five years, I can also tell you that there are hundreds of standard setups that will take you hours in Fusion, while literally 30 minutes or less in After Effects. Anything from typographic effects to more complex 2.5D compositions and you’ll start to pull your hairs out, plus outside of the curve editor, Fusions way of arranging keyframes and visibility over time is incredibly clunky, so you’ll have a hell of a time (like not good) animating. And to address the elephant in the room, certain things are simply impossible to achieve in Fusion, like all the text animators you can add in After Effects or when you have to create something similar to those crazily complex motion graphics templates on Envato or Storyblocks, where you have to create global controls that ripple through every comp so you can procedurally change an entire project. Believe me, I tried, going deep into Fusion expressions and some crazy interlocking parameters - you can’t. So the bottom line is, I would love for Fusion to replace AE for good, but the way it’s designed I doubt that will ever be the case and I wonder whether we should strive for that. Nodes are great for a lot of things, but layers are too. Rant over and thanks for all the great videos 🙂

If you know what you are doing you can go about your circle example way easier in after effects than you showed. But then again you are right about node based editing software. You could for example parent the shapes to one shape and set editing parameters. But it does get very messy over time. Also doing what you are trying to accomplish is easier done with strokes in the sun menu of each shape. All in all listen I agree with you tho.

It’s interesting... after reading some of the comments, how some people seem to feel the need to “defend” one tool over the other. I don’t think that is necessary. I got the feeling that all that this video was doing was comparing and contrasting the two and showing the differences and strengths of the Nodes and just trying to take some of the “mystique” out of using nodes. I think it's ok to take a stance honestly. No way for a beginner solo editor just learning to pay Adobe their insane monthly prices for what Resolve can do almost all of for free. It's a fantastic tool that many people dont even know of because Adobe owns the thoughtsphere of editing. It's either premiere or final cut. I'm glad to see more Resolve things out there.

What I hate about this is I have to take what I'm making into another tab where its displayed in isolation over a checkerboard background, when I need to work with it on top of my other video in the edit tab. In premiere I could just drag things around on the video and apply keyframes to it right there and know how I want it to move and interact, but in here I have no idea because I cant see it.

I was trying to key a green screen but needed to see the video and time and place it would appear, even followed a tutorial and it just never appeared. Actually the green screen video got replaced by just a section of the video that was supposed to go beneath it and instead of my green screen insert, it was just the background video on top of the background video. I'm sure that didn't even make any sense, much like nodes don't make sense to me at all.

I mostly do agree with you, but in your exemple, in AE, you could have used "set matte" effect which could be described as "one layer to rule them all", plus "link/master properties" or/and expressions - a huge time savior when you're lazy - to get rid of some layers and/or steps needed to change your desired attributes.

I'm all for nodes but to be fair, you can make things a bit easier if you set up expressions so for example everything that needs to be a certain color is referenced from an expression. It takes some time to set up. While it beats not doing it at all especially if you have tons of layers, it doesn't beat nodes in general. You get that behavior by default with nodes.

I still think layers is faster in most scenario in term of MG, if you really want to change some settings together, you can link them . In node system , change the timing of each node is time consuming.

The one bit I do miss from AE is the keyframe editing. Press U and you see all the keyframed properties, and you can move them around all you want. Is there maybe an equivalent to the AE Uber key in Fusion? Otherwise, in most every other aspect. Nodes win everything once I wrap my head around it. Just a shame the keyframes are so hidden.

I know about it. But is there a "U" button I can remap? I mean. In AE. If I press U on the timeline, it shows all the keyframed properties if all the layers and their keyframes... It made timing things very easy. Same in the color tab. There is a keyframe editor.. but good luck actually finding the property you want to animate as it's not even sharing the node or properties name. And if you want to animate several things. Then there's a whole bunch of scrolling up and down through those nondescript names. There's probably a solution already that's as useful as the U key in AE. But I have yet to find it in the keyframe editors of Resolve.

@@CaseyFaris I love DaVinci Resolve . Adobe CC AE the cloud one has lot of issue and it relays completely on CPU for rendering and all of a sudden the application goes to not responding and some times crashes

I'm a dinosaur. I never understood AfterEffects, and, up till now, Fusion seemed just as confusing; but this tutorial has helped me see the benefits of using nodes as opposed to layers. So, thanks so much for this video! P.S. In my next life, I'm going to get more training in computer programing---but, at this stage of my life, I'd just as soon drink beer.

Perhaps Apple Motion is a different workflow even though it uses layers, but how I use Motion is nowhere as complex for this work you're doing in After Effects to achieve the same thing. I can see some benefits though in nodes. Great video though and thank you.

I see the pros and cons of both apps. If Fusion made their nodes a little more user friendly a bunch of people would switch. Visual Icons like Touch Designer could make it more clear.

Interesting approach. I think fusion is not completly ready for easy accessable motion design. It's a little overcomplicated in some spots for example there is no adjustable grid or guides to snap to and small things like the Text is not scaling pretty well in some cases and Stuff like that. But I think nodes are the Best for doing complex comps. I would love to see some of your work in fusion for motion Design! :) Cheers

Hi All, I recognize this is an aged video but want to to comment anyways. I recently purchased a 2021 MBP16 M1 Max with 32 Core GPU and 64 GB. Also, I made the switch from FCP/Motion to Resolve/Fusion. I recently completed a Fusion project that had 250 nodes--I had completed the same project in Motion. It took about 60 minutes to export the Fusion project. The same export in Motion took 13 minute. Motion was about 4.5 x faster at exporting than was Fusion. There was nothing I could do to the Fusion project to make it export faster, including break it up into smaller parallel components and/or TimeStretcher nodes. When I looked at resource usage only 80% of the GPU was utilized and only about 4 of the CPU cores. My impression is that Fusion is yet to be optimized on Apple Silicon. Are nodes better than layers? Not on Apple silicon. Maybe one day, but as of now Fusion requires some significant updates to take advantage of Apple Silicon.

Go to Preferences (in DaVinci Resolve), then Memory and GPU. See if DaVinci Resolve uses the maximum amount of memory.

Looks like..I have to go from A to B but I prefer to run through all alphabet before. Nothing against nodes but if you put under my nose an after effects comp I can tell you all the relations between layers, expressions included in a glance! Don't say it's better, they are different. :-)

Not defending AE here because layers can be a pain and I would like to try out a Nuke or Fusion type system, HOWEVER, in regards to changing an asset once and having it cascade through other places it’s being used you can do this with properly links. Let’s say you have a shape layer that is acting as a matte. Then you end up duplicating that matte or shape layer multiple times. Well if you go to edit / copy with property links and paste that new layer it would be linked to that original shape. Anything you do to the first one will happen to all others. Anyhow this doesn’t make layers superior or whatever but there are ways to get around tweaking each layer when wanting to change one at least.

so you don't know after effects ... how about using precomp, connecting attributes etc? for motion design layers, for vfx nodes, every tool is better in one area and weaker in others.

As a hardcore Motion Designer I really appreciate this video, but to be honest, its misleading. Fusion is not good for hardcore Motion Design, just as AE is not good for hardcore compositing. I am not a fan of After Effects and I have tried to switch to Nuke or Fusion, but those are not designed for Motion Graphics and even Apple's Motion is a far better choice for serious Motion Graphics than those. Why? ANIMATION. Try changing the animation in Fusion, try doing it for 55 nodes, then change it again and test it again, when push comes to shove, its gonna turn into a massive headache. It is much easier to change keyframes on a timeline than selecting a node, going to the graph editor, changing the parameters of a single node and.... Animation is a huge part of Motion Design, and nodes are not cutout for it. This 👆- same thing in AE, if you spend a little bit on the front end, master properties and expressions. The two programs offer great workflows. But it comes down to which do YOU work faster in. Learn Both for sure, Still a great video Casey, Learned so so much from you about CC in Resolve.

i Did All this in After Effects with Just 3 Layers with Extra Controls, this Video is Totally Misleading it should be a Fusion Tutorial not Node Vs Layer, am sure he has less knowledge in After Effects That is why, i Tried a Common Sky Replacement with 8K RED FOOTAGE IN RESOLVE/FUSION even with 2 Titan GPU's it Struggles But AE Plays it like Faster stand Stable and Made The Process Even Better utilizing only 1 GPU and i Will Chose Nuke Over FUSION Anytime

Why not you just place the cicle in a subcomp and use it all over the place. The you can adjust it very quickly in one place. Or link the settings from one copy to the other… there are many ways to work smarter in after effects.
