I'm a newcomer to watercolour, so I very much appreciated your comment about the importance of paper quality when it comes to applying multiple layers of washes. I also benefit from how you discuss the challenges you face while you're painting and how you address them. Thanks so much for posting!

I think it can be tough as a beginner looking at other artist's work and wondering why my paintings never turn out the same way, when the biggest difference is that they are using different materials! I'm glad you like my video, and thank you for your comment 😊

Thank you very much! I have trees like this outside my window so it is easy for me to look outside and paint what I see. I also think it depends on how much time you want to spend painting trees, because I'm pretty sure it took me the same amount of time to paint the trees than it did to paint the sky!

I LOVE the layered cloud effect! Can I ask, how do the blue and yellow not make green, especially in your first layer where you're merging the colours of the sky?
@noellecurtisart5 ай бұрын
I’m glad you like it! I find that if I choose a warmer yellow than leans orange (or simply just a diluted orange), I will get a transitional color that is more natural. A little green is okay, but I understand trying to avoid a bright green in sunsets.

Beautiful work! It's funny because I have the small version of the same metal meeden palette. Put a dab of poster tack (blue tack?) on the back of each pan and they won't slide around. Mine have stayed put even when getting bounced around in a backpack.

I'm still learning and I like being honest about my process. Not every part of my paintings is intentional, and sharing these thoughts in a KZbin video also forces me to reflect on my work (more than I would have otherwise, at least)!

Does the watercolor technique have to wet the background paper every time before painting?
@noellecurtisart6 ай бұрын
For me, wetting the paper is a technique I like to use to allow the paint to blend together. Being able to do this in separate layers gives me better control. When I want sharp, or hard edges, I do not wet the paper. Other artists will have different approaches, there is no “right” way to paint 😊
@laura3071934 Жыл бұрын
Hi Noelle, this is so beautiful ! I just wanted to ask you how did you avoid getting green when you got to where blue and yellow touch each other on the first watch?
@noellecurtisart Жыл бұрын
For me, it helps to pick a “yellow” color that leans on the orange side. Orange is complementary to blue and will produce a color closer to grey instead of green. A little green in a sunset is natural, but I understand if you don’t want a lime green sky haha. I recommend creating some swatches with your supplies to see what works and go from there 😊

Try looking at it again, it actually turns green between blue and yellow
@khansaamira276 ай бұрын
In the first layer, she uses light color of blue and yellow, hence the green color made is subtle.

I had read somewhere or perhaps from another video that it is the characteristic of Naples yellow that prevents it from turning green. I have not tried it myself.

@azmgbbb8 ай бұрын
She pronounced it correctly. It sounds like how Americans would say hockey. Some say it like the hake fish and it rhymes with rake. But the hake brush is not an English word. These brushes originated in Japan. Thus ha-keh.
