This turn out beautiful. I've tried to paint clouds in watercolor many times & used the method you showed here. Mine of course are near as beautiful as yours came out, but practice makes perfect. I sure hope so! Using 200 lb paper I realize must make a big difference, I've only used 140 lb. So now I'll try it with the 200 lb. Its very easy to destroy your paper very fast if not careful, or even if you are careful. This is the fourth video I've watched of yours & I've learned quite allot from them all, even though they weren't very long. So thanks very much for each one and the fun ideas I learned. I love your demo ! Very inspiring ! But, to my opinion, 200 pounds paper seems enormous , you probably meant 200 grams paper. All the best and thanks !
@peterwoolleyartist2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jean-Pierre - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. 200lbs is correct, and equates to roughly 425gsm. The advertised weight of a paper refers to a ream (500 sheets) of full-imperial-sized sheets - so, 500 full-sized sheets of this paper would weigh 200lbs... if that makes sense. I would recommend never using anything lighter than 140lbs paper - that's 300gsm in new money. I hope that helps.

Lovely clouds. There are so many ways to do them. I seem to go for the shadows first and leave the white like negative painting. Then I add blue if there is any but whilst still wet I try to make a bloom by wetting the edge of the white gently then drying my brush and absorbing water and the blue. It causes the tiny random veining seen on the edge of the white or light color clouds. One could paint them forever.

Can you tell me again exactly what sort of paper you're using? Would it help if I primed a 140lb paper with a white acrylic wash to slow down the absorbtion ? Glad I've found someone else who can only get a result with heavier paper. Most tutors seem to use 140lb Bockingford (including the great John Blockley) but when I do it it just goes blotchy and the paper starts to dissolve
@peterwoolleyartist4 жыл бұрын
I'm using Saunders Waterford 200lbs Rough. If you're having problems with it being too absorbent, then I recommend you try Fabriano, or Two Rivers (if you can get hold of it) - both are sized very differently. As for the acrylic wash priming... hm... not sure about that - if you try it and get the result you're after, let me know... Maybe you're just being a little too agressive with your brush - try easing up on the pressure when you're scrubbing, to limit any damage to the papers surface...
@splinterbyrd4 жыл бұрын
@@peterwoolleyartist Yeah just meant the acrylic wash idea as a temporary measure until I can get some Rough 200+. Will let you know how I get on with the acrylic ground idea. Cheerz. Declan.

I’m using Arches 300 lb cold pressed. Is that equivalent to Waterford? Is arches hard sized? I see it has a gelatin coating the same as Waterford, neither lists if they are soft or hard sized. Thanks Peter, love watching and listening to your tutorials.
@peterwoolleyartist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry... yes, Saunders Waterford and Arches share many of the same properties, including the way they are sized ('hard-sized' just means they are sized throughout, with the sizing added at the 'mulchy' stage, and not simply added as a final, external layer). Both are very robust papers that will take pretty much anything you throw at them (Waterford is quite a bit cheaper, though). Thanks for the comment - I'm pleased you enjoyed the demonstration.
