I like to think that both the “Chara is the narrator, not the one who commits the genocide” theory and the “Chara is the one possessing Frisk and causing them to murder” theory can be true under different circumstances. If we consider the player as being as much of a character in Undertale’s universe as Sans, or Alphys, or anyone else in the colorful cast, then yes, it is the player who is committing the genocide. Chara is not possessing Frisk. Even in a universe where the player is not a character, it’s plausible that Frisk themself is the one committing the murder and that Chara is just following along. However, there’s nothing wrong with assuming that in the game’s universe, in the event that the player is not part of the cast but rather a player, Chara is what caused Frisk to kill. Be it to obtain a soul, or from pure sadism, Chara could have influenced Frisk. In the end, whether you think that Chara or the player is the monster, it’s just a game. It doesn’t matter what people theorize about the characters. We’re all just here to have fun in the end.

We can see that because when he throws away the soul in the cage and we try to move around the should does that too which means WE are his soul. They really do care about people and if they were evil wouldn't they kill one of the dremurrs, absorb all their souls which are boss monster souls and use their souls to kill the humans. Plus remember when Undyne transformed and they said "The Heroine appears!" They were excited that Undyne had a chance at actually stopping you! The player pushed Chara into believing that Killing all the monsters in the underground would actually "free" the monsters from their prison. And Chara was hesitant to kill Asgore and flowey. Because if they weren't they would have killed them before they even spoke.
