You know, this line has a nice double-meaning to it. It could mean: “I would have killed you the second you walked out that door.” OR “You wouldn’t survive a second out here without me watching over you.” Depending on the route(s) you took in-game, you can see both. But most people see it as a threat, understandably.

@jerral moore I think he only *genuinely* hates you if you kill Papyrus. Otherwise it’s various degrees of not really trusting you and altogether not caring what you do. (He’s just fulfilling that promise he made.) He knows a lot… Possibly more than even Asriel knows when it comes to how everything in the timeline works. With that in mind, I can only really see this line as a warning. (If it weren’t for that promise I made, you’d never make it past the bridge to Snowdin, no matter how many times I’d have to kill you.) Not out of hate, but because he realises the potential threat that the player represents to their existence.

I am fairly late, but I personally say it’s not the 1st one due to Sans being the weakest character in the game (raw power) and the only reason why he does so much damage is KR. At the start of the game when you meet Sans genocide or not, you do not have enough KR for Sans to fight you as he will be very weak in this state.

You know... I don't think Sans would have killed the player himself even if he didn't make that promise. He's got only 1 HP so he's probably very careful about getting into fights (Plus he'd probably be too lazy lol). I think he protected the player in other ways. Maybe he was the one who broke the tile puzzle. Maybe he caused Papyrus's "Gauntlet of deadly terror" to not work. Maybe he chose to not remind Papyrus about the electricity orb. He could easily have chosen to not explain blue attacks. This is how I think Sans protected the player.

The reason the gauntlet of deadly terror didn't work was because Papyrus never actually activated it, had nothing to do with Sans. The puzzle was most likely deactivated by Alphys. But as you can see with the genocide route Sans isn't afraid to fight.

I meant that Sans probably only fights in extreme circumstances. And it said that the puzzle was BROKEN, not deactivated. There's no way that Alphys could have somehow run all the way to Snowdin and break the machine before the human comes. Also, I don't think Alphys thought of helping the human in the beginning, as it is stated that she became interested in and inspired by the human as she watched them go through the underground.

It was this scene that made it click with me that there's a reason he's the one tasked with facing a human if one was to come down, seeing how all monsters are very frankly aware of the power difference. Sans was the sentry for humans for a reason. And obviously we know why by the end of the game. Amazing scene, definitely one of my favorites.

I just finished the Neutral Route today. Me and my brother were sitting through this dialogue. When he said “...buddy,” I knew something was about to happen. It was then that I knew what he was going to say I’d be dead. However, I DID NOT expect him to get so grim about it. He stopped used comic sans, used capitalization, and had soulless eyesockets. I nearly freaked out as I read the words, and my brother was just shocked. This game NEVER fails to surprise me.

Unfortunately Sans' threat is utterly meaningless. If he had been the boss immediately after Toriel, yes, he would have been tough, but he still could have been defeated eventually. The Human determination overrides his. Even if he cheated, he could still be tired out. His biggest weakness is his own low stamina, and, yeah, he still would lose. Even if we got Megalovania after leaving the ruins, he'd eventually be beaten. Players would find out how to do so, pass on the information to others, and Sans would lose. Or, worse, the player simply runs away from the fight, and kills Papyrus while Sans is sleeping. Sans would never forgive himself for that. His threat there means nothing to someone who would want the genocide ending, to someone who wants to 100% the game. He can threaten you during the neutral/pacifist route like that, but when he actually tries to take you down in the genocide, he'll fail eventually.
