Joe Manning returned from the Korean War a changed man and became a Bohemian artist, supported by his understanding mother and distrusted by others. On a drunken binge, Joe flirts with torch singer Irene Crescent, who is later found dead by the hand of the town's serial killer...and Joe's the prime suspect. No one will help Joe except carhop 'Slacks'. Can they find the real killer before he finds them?

Enjoyed this one from 1956. A good, believable storyline and well acted. John Bromfield did a good job of acting drunk early on, a nice cameo for Julie London. It all ends happily, as they always do in this type of film.

@@robtw88 Pretty good movie for five days shooting. I favor the 1940's thru the 1950's B&W oldies over any other decades. O really appreciate you providing many of them. B&W sets a particularly perfect ambience for films of the silver screen Especially in film noir and drama where light, darkness and shadows are well used for dramatic effect.

Depending on if the guys could come up with their 10 year old high school pin seemed to be a real shaky strategy. After 10 years...??? I graduated H.S. in 1970 and we didn't have any pins, we just had the H.S. ring. I didn't wear my ring for very long at all. I went to college in the Fall, and the next Spring, I volunteered for the Navy with a deferred active date of that August, 1971. I might have seen my H.S. ring a few times in my dresser somewhere, but it didn't mean anything to me. My H.S. years became another life that I lived; I moved on. Now, don't misunderstand me. I had a great H.S. experience: 1st string football every year, second fastest sprinter with 10.3 speed in the 100 yard dash, Senior Student Council president, Senior class president, speech contest winner for my county, and was in the choir every year. Yep, I was very active and did well. But it was just a step along the way in my life.

What happened to the sleepwalker ? It's sad that there will be probably in every highschool at least some guys who never find their soulmate before it's too late. I'm one of them. Pretty good film though for me there were two weak parts in the storyline - slacks not going straight to the police after the attempted hit and run. Yes, it turned out that wasn't the killer, but still. Then the real killer at the end giving dumber members of the audience and Joe, his full confession! But enjoyable and tense, nevertheless...

The 1945 graduation date lines up very well with the Korean War. The 1945 graduates wouldn't be likely to have seen combat in World War Two, but they would have been draftable in 1950 when the Korean War started, as was the case with my dad, a 1946 graduate.

Interesting enough movie for its day. Not sure Joe really loved Slacks or he would have made a play for her earlier and at the end just grateful for her love for him. Never thought London was beautiful. She always wore her hair in an odd way, pushed to a point in her face. It didn't add to her looks.
