Spoiler for those who want to know how the mask was able to hurt diablo The Mask was able to hurt Diablo or Black as he was known as at the time because the mask was indestructible it was only indestructible because it exists in a temporal paradox until it reached it's point of origin Black having realized this obsessively watched Shizu waiting so when Shizu met Rimuru the spirit Ifrit was able to break the mask because it was no longer indestructible. Black understood that this meant the mask originated from Rimuru. This is also why Black had wished to serve Rimuru.
