ALL music in this video is 100% Arturia Synths and Drum Machines performed by ME
#1: Nobody gave me money to make this video, I wanted to review a bunch of synths in one video and I worked to get my hands on as many as I could. I've extensively used every single synth in this video over many years, so I thought I could give my thoughts on them all as I've played every one (except the Origin, but can you hold that against me, honestly)
IF YOU WANTED A NO TALKING VIDEO, ONCE AGAIN GO AWAY HAHAHA jk
TLDR: I thought it would be fun to gather a bunch of synths from one company and see what they all brought to the table.
Shoutout to Zzounds and Arturia for sending me over or letting me borrow a bunch of synthesizers and drum machines that I'd never used so that I could make a video that I felt would be fun. Sometimes there are synths that I just would never be able to buy because they're too expensive or just too random, over the years I missed out on reviewing so many of these cool pieces from Arturia, so this was a chance to do it all at once!

As someone who's not a musician but loves to play around with sound-generating electronics, I find the keyboard on the MicroFreak is a lot of fun to use. It won't help me learn how to play a piano, but the instant control it can give you over various functions is really fun to play around with. For people who complain about it, I usually tell them it's cheap and easy to get a MIDI controller if you want a normal keyboard, but it's way harder to get a keyboard like the MicroFreaks as an addon so I'm glad Arturia made that design choice.

MatrixBrute is the GOAT! Since it's been discontinued, I'm actually hoping they may work on an MKII version of it. With more digital implementation like wavetables, a large touch display instead of the matrix buttons - to draw complex LFO Step-sequencing stuff (like Xfer Serum or Massive), instant patch recall, easier diving, and maybe even customizing wavetables. That be an ultimate hybrid dream-synth with insane sonic possibilities ⚡⚡

I really like your reviews. You always separate the “subjectives” and the “objectives” and give very fair points for each product you talk about. Thanks for the overview. For me it is the Polybrute. The left side of the instrument appears to be crowded with controls because the designers included a separate knob for each individual function, I think. Less menu diving. In the beginning I overused those effects but know I learned that less is more. Raw sounds can be very effective in music production, as they have a natural and unprocessed quality that can add a sense of authenticity and raw energy to a track

I played an Origin a whiiiillleee back. I had a friend borrowing one from a studio in San Francisco. It was buggy due to age, and some sort of power supply issue. Very cool synth, although I wasn't familiar with architecture or as skilled with sound design and playing at that time, so I can't say I was able to really grasp the depth of the engine. That being said, a Polybrute is one of the only pieces of hardware that is interesting to me at the moment.

The minibrute 2s sequencer is amazing. The 2 CV mod tracks can be changed between different voltage ranges an envelope mode that turns them into decay envelopes with per step decay control and an lfo with sin, square, saw up, saw down and s&h. Its one of the most impressive sequencers on an analog synth at its price.

I own 2 Keysteps (Org), a Beatstep, a Microbrute, a Minibrute 2S, and a Drumbrute (Org)- What got me started down the Arturia “rabbit hole” was the Keystep, with it’s awesome keyboard (considering it’s size), it’s numerous connectivity possibilities (again, considering it’s size) next was the super-fun to use Beatstep (would love to get Pro versions of both, if I could ever afford them!) next was the Microbrute, which I purchased after hearing an absolutely incredible set from someone playing one of these (along with a drum machine) then became convinced to get the 2S after seeing Loopop’s review of it here on KZbin (was torn between the two versions, but decided on the 2S because of it’s 64 step sequencer) Next, I really, really want a Minifreak (I’d felt that way about the Microfreak until it’s larger “brother” came out!

Only have a Microfreak and it’s been a fun lil thing. First thing I did was tie the Chords inversion parameter to the LFO for sorta a bitchippy/bittrippy thing? I don’t know what to do with that but I’m sure something ‘ll come up eventually.

I don't think you can buy a MatrixBrute anymore. I bought a new MicroBrute with the intension of buying two for true stereo sound design, but they went out of production a month after buying it. I am studio only for synths, so I would rather have two MiniBrutes than one MatrixBrute anyway, run into a mixer with good effects and have true stereo monosynth. I may buy a DrumBrute to layer with an Electribe, the two layered would fix the problem of only one stereo output for processing and the thin sound of the Electribe and poor effects. DrumBrute has 4 isolated outputs for a few of the drumkit.

Matrixbrute kind of disappointed me. There were a lot of obvious things I'd want to patch in the matrix that were not possible? I can't recall which exactly because I don't have one in front of me now. But I seem to recall that there wasn't a way to patch noise to filter cutoff.

Tee hee hee, I’ve had it for quite a while. Maybe 6+ months, I really found a fond place for it since originally I didn’t think it was useful to me since I have so many synths already. It’s to me the perfect expression/sound design beast. Arturia killed it with this one minus that one thing I mentioned.

I still have my Microbrute, that was my first analog synth some 6-7 years ago and taught me a tonne about subtractive synthesis. It almost never gets used any more, but I'm just too emotionally attached to sell it ;)

@@noiretblancvie-afterhours Ah yes, so I have worked out how to get around both of those "cons" :D Sometimes I'll run the DBI through my Microbrute's filter. Having LP, HP and BP is very useful! I have a boss rc-300 so I like to loop the Drumbrute sequences which allows me to record parameter changes so I can have as many different varieties of each sound as I please! And a bonus tip... You can use the kick as an oscillator! If you make a pattern with only a kick playing every 16th with the roller to max And tempo above 200 you can make some good drones

Honestly disappointed on the quick blip of the Matrixbrute. It is so powerful compared to just about anything else in the line up, and the paraphonic modes are killer. If it didn't weigh a metric ton.... 😆
