This is a love story about a synthesizer unlike many others, in my opinion a synth that came out so long ago still eclipses many releases of today. Great Synth Mystery, mmm, maybe... but I wanted to make a compelling piece about such a wonderful instrument. As a musician and not a reviewer or journalist I think this really speaks to how ahead of it's time the Access Virus Ti was.

Something to consider about digital audio: The types of connections seem to limit the timelessness of the hardware. While plain old analog audio has entrenched itself as something that will never be truly obsolete, USB audio, software controllers, etc will always be subject to issues over time if not kept up-to-date. By avoiding that stuff and making a synth that is more of an "isolated island" that operates entirely within itself, it is more likely that the synth can continue to be used in exactly the same way it was originally designed decades from now.

After wanting a Virus for 20 years, I finally got a used one last month. It is very cool and such a beast. Perhaps this is why modern synths are seemingly less capable: it's a little intimidating to have so much available in one box.

I have a dream... of designing a Virus inspired successor based on open RISC-V chips, so it's open all the way down to the silicon. That way, in theory, we would never run into the issue with the synth's processor being discontinued. You could always take the design to another fab. I was thinking of learning embedded C++ and seeing if I could leverage Mutable Instruments' open source code as a starting point. If only I didn't need a day job...

The Montage has two sets of stereo outputs, not one - you literally show them at 5:30 as you pan past the jacks. It also has 32 channels of USB audio out (you can send a stereo pair from each of the 16 parts, each of which can be a separate sound made up of hundreds of elements, with unique effects). And if you like, it has 6 channels of USB in, so you can run other sounds through its effects. The Hydrasynth again has two sets of stereo outs, which (again) you literally show at 5:37 as you pan past them, just as you say it has a "pair of stereo in and outs". Actually the Hydrasynth has no audio input, but you can achieve kind of the same thing using its modulation inputs, which will read into the audio range. I agree with you about Osirus - it does sound amazing. The user interface leaves a bit to be desired, and the non-standard method which in which it integrates as a plugin to your DAW is somewhat limiting however.
@gautrstafr
@gautrstafr 6 ай бұрын
I think probably the best thing in production today is the Yamaha Montag M series ... BUT it seems you got the data for the Montage all wrong! It's basically over 1,000 part multitibral because the new generation can have 128 "elements" within each of the main 8 parts (basically turning each part into a full blown Motif). Plus VA (AN-X) and FM-X engines. It also has 400 note polyphony in total, though it's divided up in a weird way, because of the chips used. It's at least 128 for the AWM enine (plus 128 for non-preset samples), 128 for FM-X and 16 for AN-X (so similar to the Quantum just in that engine) Also, the new ESP plugin has come where you can directly edit parts, basically similar to the TI aspect of the Virus. On the MIDI side it also has USB input so you can integrate other controllers through itself. Plus it has 4 outputs, 2 inputs and an audio interface, 6-in/32-out so you have a lot of flexibility there. It's not just stereo out. Though I do agree it's completely different, not necessarily overall better but if you're a player in a live Band, the Montage M is just miles ahead of the TI. If you're a synthesist in your studio, then they're just different.

I had a TI Snow back in the day and used it in some bands I was in. The thing was such an absolute monster for how little space it took up! I have a Waldorf Iridium and it has filled that void for me. It's so intuitive and visually pleasing and while it does lack polyphony and some of the shaping, it feels like you can create anything you want on it if you're clever about what you do.
@browe

Same here--TI Snow user who also now has Iridium. Like you said, it featured so much juice in a small package, but it had it's problems when playing live. It unexpectedly (yet rarely) glitched while mono/unison playing... I never could sort that out to feel confident enough with it on stage.
@GuitarsAndSynths

@@browe only downside on Waldorf compare to the Virus is lack of the multi-timbral capacity- virus is 16 part multi-timbral and Waldorf only duo-timbral. So Waldorf gimped their expensive hardware with newer technology than Virus. I love being to run 6 drum patches, 4 synth patches and a bass line on one piece of hardware. Waldorf cannot do that!

I think what all these synthesizer manufacturers have realized is that the long feature list isn't actually useful if the interface to access all those features isn't great. And even if the interface is great, with all those features you end up overwhelmed with choice paralysis. I have had a Hydrasynth for like 6 months and I think I have used the 4th and 5th envelope like once. There are just very very few people who actually need and use the phonebook sized featurelist of something like the virus. But we are techno-fetishists who think that a longer featurelist will make us happy. Or that we think that missing features are what is holding us back creatively.

Lets be real. All those older synths had a thousand features because at the root of it they did not sound very good. The market has moved away from workstations that claim to do everything in favor of synths that do one thing well and have knobs per function. Because honestly the product that does all of these things that a giant keyboard does is a laptop with a MIDI controller.

The lack of multi-outs is why I ultimately got rid of my waldorf iridium. It's an amazing synth, don't get me wrong, but I don't want to have to do 16 part mixing internally when I'd rather do it on my actual hardware mixer. I ended up sticking an 18i20 onto my MPC key61, while not as robust or capable, it gets the job done.

I don't know how many of you have heard about Adam Szabo Viper Vst which is kind of modeled after Virus TI. It has all of those oscliators (formant, grain, wavetable, multisaw and classic). It can also run all of the Access Virus sounds via mid.format. I also made couple of soundbanks (Trance, Synthwave and Cinematic) in this vst and i must say it is really really close to the real Access Virus except of real knobs of course (it has 128 polyphony).

There will never be another Access Virus... but I feel like there doesn't need to be. It was great, but it's just not really needed any more. It was designed for a particular workflow which isn't used much these days, with a 16-track hardware midi sequencer driving a 16-track synthesizer. But then DAWs got popular, so Access added Total Integration to make the Virus stay relevant longer. This helped because computers didn't have the power to synthesize so many tracks at once. But when computers got more powerful, the Virus largely faded away because it was no longer necessary, and the hardware was inconvenient and limiting compared to VSTs. Hardware-based workflows stuck around, but they largely shifted toward other goals -- expressive hands-on performance controls, enhanced sound design interfaces, analog nostalgia, portability, and exotic feature sets... which are all things other synths do better. I used to want a Virus. Like, really really bad. But now, I don't even know what I'd do with one. It's not relevant to my needs any more.
@kidthorazine
@kidthorazine 6 ай бұрын
Pretty much this. IIRC the Virus Ti2 is 100% digital anyway, so making a hardware version seems kind of pointless when you could just make a VSTi. That was a much bigger ask back in the 2000s since computers where a lot slower so being able to offload a lot of the DSP to an external box made a lot more sense, nowadays it's just expensive and redundant leave the hardware for stuff that has real analog components.

The cult of Virus is strong, and there may well never be another. But...there are quite a few lovely software alternatives, if not outright replacements. Spire, Hive, Sylenth, Lush2, Avenger, Dune, the new GForce Oddity and Minimonsta, most of the Tone 2 stuff, and Viper (a direct 'inspiration') can all get you close, IF you know what you're doing. While I've always wanted one, I think I'll get a fancy controller instead. With incredible advances in digital audio technology, interfaces and virtual analogue oscillator and filter modeling the Virus is no longer essential, but will forever remain desirable. Great video!

I have TWO of these: 61 keys and desktop. Without any doubt, when all features are considered, the TI and TI2 are the most complete hardware synths in the history of synthesizers. It's not hyperbole. No other polyphonic synthesizer has attempted to even come close to the 16 part multi-timbrality that the TI offers. Never mind the rest of the features, and possibilities, which are boundless.

Oh I never forget when I purchased the Virus TI in 2005. I'm a dance music producer since 2003, and when I discovered in the beginning that a LOT of dance music was created with the Virus synths (especially the B / C in that time) I wanted it so badly. Then in 2005 the TI came and I went to the shop (Yes kids, in that time you actually had physical shops where u needed to go to). And there it was, beautiful Virus TI. Red and White LED's beautifully flashing. I think I played it four at least an hour. I purchased it right away. Since then, I used it in almost every production. It's so inspiring. I sold all my hardware synths, since I use mostly softsynths nowadays. The sound of sofsynths is great. But my Virus TI, it will never, ever go away. The sound is unmatched. I understand why Kemper never released a new version. Why should he? I think he realised he created the ultimate synth, how can you improve this? I only hoped he released a softsynth version of this, since computers nowadays have more then enough power. But others released the DSP emulation of the software, which I also use now and it sounds as great as the Virus TI itself. So, however I use the software emulation out of convenience, my Virus TI hardware will never be sold when I'm alive :).

As someone who uses both synths and guitar modelers, i think the entire music industry owes a lot to Christoph Kemper. I just hope he releases a new Virus synth… his company must be developing something because the Kemper looks like it’s mostly been the same tech since it launched… unless his company no longer had any R&D going on?

It's not easy to afford for everyone and I can't imagine how much it would hurt to save for months or years only for it to be discontinued before you can buy new.

Oh, I did not know until watching your video that the Virus TI is discontinued. I bought it right when it came out, but due to my job I could not play it for the last 8 years or so. Are old firmware and plugin software updates still downloadable somewhere?

The way I see it the Access Virus 2TI is like a classic car. There aren't gonna be any others made and people want them. It's an appreciating asset. They are pretty unique as Super powered Digital analogue synths. Analogue synths become more and more unaffordable as time goes on. Right now the best Digital Analogue is the Access Virus. But it's so much more than that. It's a super powered synth with a massive fx unit built in. Not mention the ability to integrate with DAWs. (Although that might atrophy over time if Access don't support it.) Right now it seems like a great investment. 2K for TI2 polar 37 key unit seems like a bargain. Bound to cost over 10K within 10 years I think. I'm holding on to my Snow for now. Luv and Peace.

The TI2 Keyboard was also the cheapest Option to get the fantastic Fatar TP/8S keybed. Since macOS total integration does not work any more, I use my virus only as a controller. best keybed and a bunch of high quality knobs to assign to soft synths.

The only problem is the Virus are plagued with battery failures and software bugs that will NEVER be fixed.. horrible OS my Indigo LCD screen failed battery failed and would not start up properly after replacement.. plus my TI was buggy as hell audio over USB was very glitchy glad to be rid of them both now and The Waldorf iridium replaced easily the sound and far better interface. The whole Virus community called for a new virus for so many years! and the makers never listened and missed the boat big time..

Imagine, I just got a Ti2 Whitedout for $2500 and this video comes out. A friend of mine told me back in 2012, 12 years ago!: Why would they need to upgrade the Ti2 if is already perfect? You can not go anywhere else, that is it!

I don’t buy the official story from Kemper. I was on the waiting list for the original TI in 2005. Still have. So ive been here since the inception until the end. Plotec owns the plugin? Who owns everything else?

Back when I was looking for a dedicated synthesizer the TI and the NL3 were the two main contenders on my list. Since I (still) play only dawless, I went for the NL3 and I still love that thing to death. My best guess is that nowadays there is more than enough power to do everything software based, that (for most manufacturers) there is no incentive to create a hardware based synthesizer when it is a) super expensive to produce and distribute and b) will always fall behind software capabilities. Most flagship workstations now come with pre-installed emulators for the legendary synths of the past, the time of great synths is just over. The one "new" synth I'd consider today is an OB-6 probably.

I have both the virus TI and Quantum. Virus does not have "unlimited" modulation. The mod matrix of the Quantum smokes it. Edit where are you getting quantum is 8 part multi timbral? It is Bi Timbral.

Might be an unpopular opinion but Waldorf Quantum (or Iridium) is on par or maybe is even ahead of TI2 but for sure at the time it came out, no softwares were even as versatile as this piece of hardware. RIP, hope Access will come back to synth industry again

To the question about "Why there's no way better digital synths nowadays" I believe the answer is that the synth community has decided altogether that digital is bad and you need monophonic analogue synths because they are "warm" and sound better because they are imperfect. So yeah, the market has shrunk considerably for that purism about analog.

the Virus was winner and dominator of all synth in early 00s, when hardware synth limited by effects and voices, and soft synth just in developing, pc power still weak can't handle too much instances, but after 10s, Virus becomes weak, people create more project in pc with soft synth, more powerful Japanese keyboard synth, and now Virus also worth to keep in your list for it voices, also you can buy Waldorf Kyra for similar use

I would disagree on that the sound is subjetive. I have never heard better unison or filters in any other synth. So far no other digital or hardware synth has better more firm sounding unison and filters to this day. I am never letting go of my Snow.

If they would ever make a new virus, they would have to re-invent it. New architecture, new DSP engine., new effects, better audio quality, better computer integration. With the powerfull FPGA's and microcontrollers available these days, They could make it with 16 parts and no compromises. No voice drops stuff like that. But I like the virus formfactor it's clever and scalable. This new virus would be a centerpiece for me.
