Well if you're in a crowd, like a cafe, it cancels it quite well, cause all the voices muddle together and becomes more of a drone similar to an airplane, but with peaks in the midrange. Noise cancellation has a harder time with treble noise, but that's mostly due to the earbuds not having the dynamic range neccesary at the high range to properly cover it, or the mic no being able to catch all the detail

@nugget6635

It's opposite in Amplitude. It's not playing backwards. Opposite Amplitude means... That crests become troughs and troughs become crests... The sound will still sound the same because what matters to our ears is the difference in pressure... Our ears kinda do not care about if the eardrum is moving outside or inside, as long as it's moving.
@rkidy
@rkidy 2 ай бұрын
@@nugget6635opposite amplitude generally just means the wave has been phase shifted 180 degrees, so it’s the exact same sound just half a wavelength behind. Considering the wavelength of music is generally gonna be measured in mm, the delay is pretty much negligible. So to human ears, the “opposite” of a sound is pretty much the exact same sound.

It's definitely not a sound engineer explanation, but it's a nice and simple KZbin shorts explanation for non-sound engineer folk like me. I'll try and see if I understood it correctly: Sound is a wave, from energy moving molecules around. It moves the molecules back and forth a certain way. In this case, sound travels through air, and is received by our ears. In headphones, the sound is made by moving the speaker in a certain way. By copying surrounding sound, inverting the sound, and playing it in the speaker, then it cancels out that surrounding sound since you can't move the air both back and forth at the same time. Trying to move forward while also moving backward at the same speed will result in you not moving. If two people who match each other's strength play tug of war, the rope won't budge. Thus, that once-moving air turns into non-moving (or just slower/different moving, since noise cancellation technology isn't perfect) air that doesn't reach the ear. I hope that was correct.

sound is pressure waves more pressure = more bunched up molecules inverted noise still has the same pressure wave pattern just flipped, so it sounds the same but the molecules bunch up in a pattern opposite to the first pattern, having bunches where the first had spread out molecules. play both sounds at once and the pressure from both groups of high pressure molecules pull on each other, evening them out so that the pressure goes away. sound is pressure waves, no pressure = no sound

But it also has a downside. It has a delay. So in certain situations these "noise cancelling" devices can actually amplify an outside sound which can be harmful to you and you might not even notice how terrible your hearing is after just a few months of using them.

It's more so interesting than strange, although i get why someone would word it that way. Phase cancellation is a very interesting property of audio where a wave and its inverted phase counterpart cancel each other out. Digitally and on paper, it makes complete sense, but seeing it performed in real life to eliminate unwanted outside noise is super cool and can seem strange hahah It can seem especially strange because in an analogue sense, both the sound and the inverted counterpart sound the exact same, but when played together or against eachother it sounds silent. Theoretically if you have two speakers lined up in the proper conditions, and play one audio source from each, you would not be able to hear anything, and that does sound strange for someone who may not know whats going on

I find noise cancelling, particularly on AirPod Pros, to be incredible. I was on a plane not too long ago, and whilst the noise of the engine was practically silent, it automatically detected the voices of those I was conversing with. They were effectively filtering out the noise it somehow knew I didn’t want to hear, whilst amplifying voices of people speaking to me. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.

I've always been confused as to how adding a second inverted noise actually cancelled it in a way that worked like protection. I understood from past explanations that it did by kind of "averaging" it out to put it in simpler terms but I never got why this would make it any safer for helicopter drivers and the like, but now I finally understand why it doesn't just blast your ears with double as much noise!
