Without a doubt, Meniere's is a most difficult and miserable illness to have. My latest attack lasted 1 month. I couldn't keep any food down, losing 25 pounds. I had to keep trying sips of water or electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated. Just the sight and smell of food caused more vomiting. I have experienced "drop attacks" where it feels like the Earth just "rolled over", and I fell to the floor. Walking was impossible, I had to crawl to my bed. I was put on triamterene/hydrochlorthiazide (Dyazide) diuretic, and unfortunately for me it caused even MORE nausea and vomiting, as well as a "heavy" and weak feeling in my legs and syncope (fainting). Therefore, I had to switch to acetazolamide (Diamox) diuretic. Diamox has a side effect of paresthesia (numbness and tingling) in my face, back, and hands/fingers; but that is better than the side effects from Dyazide. I actually do best taking it at bedtime, so as to sleep through most of the side effects. The diuretic effects are not so forceful as to cause constant trips to the bathroom, so bedtime use is working well; with only needing to get up once at night. It seems to be helpful with regard to the hydrops and a reduction in symptoms. Meclizine and Zofran are only mildly effective. Predisone is not well tolerated by me because it stimulates my heart into a fast pace with PAC/PVS dysrhythmias. When not ill, I eat a very low sodium diet; fresh fruits and vegetables; very, very limited meat; no junk food. I normally drink 3 quarts of water a day. I never drink alcohol and I don't smoke. I am a PhD Internal Medicine/Cardiology Nurse Practitioner. I definitely have extra empathy for my patients who also have Meniere's. For me, the attacks are preceded by prodromal symptoms such as a feeling of intense fullness and pressure in my right ear, otalgia (ear pain), intense roaring tinnitus sound, intense headache, dizziness, and a queazy feeling. These prodromal symptoms always quickly progress into rotational vertigo, dizziness, extreme difficulty walking, poor balance, nausea, and vomiting-- like one would experience after getting off a spinning ride or a merry-go-round. Other conditions such as sudden changes in altitude; as well as barometric pressure changes can set off an attack. Therefore, stormy weather systems that roll through Colorado can set off an attack; along with flying in/out of DIA, or mountain driving/riding in a car-- because of the sudden altitude and/or pressure changes in the Rocky Mountains. The attacks always leave me feeling very fatigued and sleepy. Meniere's is a most uncomfortable condition. I don't know anyone else with Meniere's (outside of a few patients). I am about ready to consider a more drastic treatment, as the past 12 years have been so difficult. Respectfully, Dr. Lana B.

Hi Dr. so sorry to here of your horrible experience so far with Menieres. I too suffered long and frequent bouts driving me to the depths of despair. After trying everything else as suggested by my excellent ENT here in Sydney, I finally opted for the Gentamicin injection. This changed everything. It ended my attacks overnight pretty much and although the Gentamicin robbed me of the hearing I had left in the bad ear….it was totally worth it. I would urge you talk about Gentamicin with your ENT. Good luck

Hi Lana. I'm so sorry for everything that you've been through - and for so long too! That is torture 😢 Can I ask you another question please? Did you EVER feel a sensation like you were floating or going up and down in an elevator, walking on a suspension bridge or trampoline, or rocking, bobbing, swaying? I'm just trying to figure out if one can have both Meniere's and MDDS at the same time - or if the fluid etc issue in Meniere's is what's also causing the MDDS symptoms too. And so that means that you can experience a different form of vertigo with Meniere's - that is normally/traditionally classed as MDDS, not Meniere's. My thinking is that the symptoms experienced by people that have Meniere's are so vast and different, that it's actually the Meniere's Disease changes in/to the ears that's causing people's MDDS. Basically they overlap - or are in fact, the same disorder/disease - and that the people that put the MDDS criteria together, just don't know that yet 😉 Gosh, I hope I'm making sense?! Lol x

When you say it lasted months, you mean 24/7? I started having a massive dizzy episode 5 years ago. I rang for the ambulance. They diagnosed vertigo. It lasted 2 hours, but laying down in a dark room with my eyes closed , it felt alright. Then I can get up after 2 hours. Then 1 week later out of the blue it happened again. I was picking up my son for school. I'm thinking, holy crap, how do I get home, I drove slowly and got home. It wasn't far and no traffic. This happened 5 times and then mamy specialists later, it was diagnosed as Menieres. I took Betahistine for 6 months, and it went away for 5 years, until 2 months ago. I stopped drinking coffee, eating chocolate etc. It stopped for 1 month, and the other day I had my head down for 5 minutes digging a hole and it happened again. Horrible disease. I dread the next time it happens. But stress can cause it, so I need to stay optimistic.

I changed my diet. Started juicing and making green smoothies. I took seamoss ( natural minerals), blackseed oil,liquid magnesium, etc and didn't use anything or eat anything toxic. No sugar or dairy. I hear turmeric and curcumin capsules help some people with magnesium and diet change.

I was recently diagnosed with this. My symptoms keep coming on more frequently especially the nausea. Very difficult to work when you have to cancel on people last minute due to vertigo, tinnitus, and nausea. I'm only 49. I had these symptoms as a kid that was bad enough, then they went away. They've come back with a vengeance over the past year. I never know when it's going to happen. I just woke up at 5am and had the vertigo for 20 min while laying down already. The worst was having an episode while driving and unable to pull over anywhere.

Thanks - I think I can rule out Menieres based on the symptoms. My tinnitis is more high pitched - like tape hiss. I have not had any rotary vertigo - just a light headed feeling - and my hearing seems to be fine.

I wish Dr. Venema could elaborate on My particular Meniers disease. My hearing test showed the opposite. My hearing at the low. On my left side is only 10 dcb higher than my right ears ability to hear. And the high frequency in my left ear is garbage.

Hi! In case you've developed symptoms of this, my message is for you. I was diagnosed as a 23yo with M in dec 2015. I was out having bouts of vertigo for 3 months, then it just went away, and it has been 100% gone for almost 5 years now. It is strongly likely, mine was caused by a viral infection of the inner ear, after having the common cold. Also could be due to a moldy house I lived in. Hang in there, better times are ahead for sure.

I am 30 and went out drinking one night. I had 12 tall cans of beer, no water and ate nothing that day (I have done this in the past). I went to bed at 2:30AM that night and my alarm went off at 8AM for work. I hit snooze and immediately I heard a massive loud ringing in my ear. I have tinnitus but this sounded extreme and it sounded like it was inside my head. I immediately got up and went to the bathroom to try and clear my ear but nothing worked, the ringing stopped after 15 seconds. Then all of a sudden my vision got blurry and started to spin, I thought I was feeling effects of the alcohol from the night before. I started walking and realized I couldn't balance myself I started falling over everywhere. Finally, I sat on my knees at the end of the bed and held on. After 15 seconds it went away and I was normal. The whole attack lasted maybe 30 seconds possibly less. I called the doctor that day and she said I had vertigo but not to worry unless it happened again, she said everything I put my body through including the lack of sleep could have triggered it. I asked her if it was possible this could be a one off situation and she said yes. But, after doing all this research I feel like I have this and I am scared shitless. I am so scared to drive, I have been driving extremely slow and sticking to the right lane just incase anything happens. It's ruining me and I keep sitting here waiting for the next attack to happen.

@@marchfifth1754 changed your diet. Do a liver detox and get some minerals and turmeric capsules omega3 to bring down the inflammation in the head. I went the herbal way many years and went vegan. Its a lack of vitamins and minerals and inflammation. Sometimes a virus also. Go to a chinese doctor.

Have you been in car accidents or hit your head playing sports etc? Whatever the case you could have a misaligned C1 neck bone impinging on the spinal cord you should look into an upper cervical chiropractor and get X-rays done. They are very effective with Meniere's (and just do gentle adjustments to your neck).

I've been diagnosed with Meniere's and loud noise is a huge trigger for vertigo in my case. In two instances steroids and diuretics calmed things down. Currently battling for about a month with minimum to no improvement. Can't be around any noise and waking up with vertigo pretty much daily. A nightmare for a musician...or anyone for that matter. Thank you sir for your wonderful presentation... I have few doubt about mieneers.. since I have diagnosed last 3 years.. was terrific episodes. Consulted ENT and audiology.. nu.ber of diagnostic test done. Diet control and certain drug suggested. , but was not in control. Then I had 8 intra tympanic injection last 2 years.. I learned the severity cones down. .but last one year I noticed the neck pain can also stimulate vertigo. So I consult spine surgeon. MRI done , i have cervical disc bulge on c_ 5&6 and 6&7 and rest degenerative disc disease .suggested few exercise and muscle relaxant... and I noticed when I dont have neck pain then I dont any tinnitus..otherwise very bad tinnitus. I have still hearing loss. I put one hearing aid..but doesn't benefit ..now I stop all medication for vertigo.. taking sone muscle relaxant and muscle strenth exercise.. can any one suggest wat sort of mieneers is this. ? Disc bulging and degenerative disease can cause vertigo? Nowadays vertigo occurs, when i look down or turning my neck side to side ..

I have read that there is Gastric Vertigo. Acid reflux can rise up into the eustacian tubes and irritate the inner ear resulting in vertigo.

I always feel the need to tell people w vertigo, do not discount your allergies causing your vertigo. My vertigo stopped after my dog passed away and I stated using nasal spray. After many mris and doctor visits, I kind of cured this vertigo on my own.

I don't consider it an attack until I have vertigo. For me it starts as a slight sensation in my head (a bit of pressure, feeling tired, or it becomes hard to focus). If it continues, the pressure can turn to pain, roaring tinnitus, and a strong desire to just sleep. It builds up slowly and if it gets bad enough, crescendos with vertigo where I experience vomiting for about half an hour and then sleep for half the day. I've had the general symptoms (pressure, tinnitus, brain fog) come and go in a day or last for weeks without experiencing vertigo.

I had a vertigo-episode a few days ago, it varme out of nowhere, lasted for 3 hours. Could not Even walk... When it stopped, my tinnitus Also went away. So now i have some days or weeks, maybe a few months without tinnitus, or severe hearingloss. Actually perfekt hearing atm 😂 maybe its not menieres i have🤔

I was diagnosed with Ménière’s disease by an ENT 3 years ago. He prescribed me diuretic pills and had me reduce my salt and caffeine intake. This did not seem to help much. Desperate to get relief from my symptoms I went online and discovered a biologist with the disease. He came up with an over the counter supplement regimen that alleviated his vertigo drop attacks and greatly reduced his tinnitus and hearing loss. I ordered his supplements and have been now for over 3 years mostly symptom free also. Google the John of Ohio supplement regimen. It has literally saved my and many others lives.

First 2 days had bad vertigo and nausea along with no hearing from my right ear. Im on day 5 of steroids, not much diffence. But im hoping for the best. I feel like my head is in a cloud, not clear at all. I felt a little dizzy when i dtove today, but i think ny anxiety added a little to that.

@Rascal von Manor I was diagnosed last Friday with sudden sensonural hearing loss. I'm on my 7th day of steroids, and notice no improvement. I go back to the ent on Wednesday morning. I had really bad vertigo the first 2 days. The vertigo isn't bad anymore, but I experience a lot of tinnitus and brain fog.

Maybe you should tell clients to change their diet period. Its more than just salt. Go to some of the facebook pages and learn people who fast on juice and smoothies typically reverse this but y'all rather cut out body parts. Stop cutting people and try saying lets try diet change.
