Oh and cleaning the gate - I had this camera a while ago and I’m assuming you can’t remove the lens to access the gate from the outside, or remove the gate. Regardless, if you have to end up cleaning it from the inside, you should be able to see the opening of the gate when you don’t have a film cartridge in there. You either need to use a squeeze-bulb air blower (compressed air might damage your lens) or a very soft-bristled brush to blow/blush around the edges of the gate. Film supply places also sell “orange wood sticks” that you scrape around the perimeter of the gate to remove hairs.

I think the footage looks awesome and much more interesting! It is similar to digital vs. analog argument when talking about synths. I like the "imperfections", it is so much more enjoyable to watch. Great job and keep them coming!!

I can't wait to see more! I'm especially excited to hear more of your music. BTW, A lens that maintains focus while zooming is called a parfocal lens and is really expensive. Your super8 camera will definitely not have one. And as for cleaning the gate, if it's a c-mount lens, you should just be able to unscrew the lens from the body and see the square little gate right there. Go at it with some alcohol on a cotton swab.

Thanks! That's the word I was looking for. Parfocal. A lot of the advice I've read has said to zoom in to focus - making it easier, then zoom out to get the shot at the distance you want, which is why I've been confused. Surely if that works, it should work the opposite way? I know hee-haw about physics... Unfortunately the lens on the 514XL is fixed, so there's no way to easily remove the lens. There are disassembly guides online, but I'm not up for risking that. Yet!!

@@StephenMcLeod With digital cameras it's common to "punch in" to focus but this is just a digital zoom. Not sure if the advice you got was from super8 nerds or maybe just general camera advice. I could certainly be wrong about all this, I'm just an amateur myself. From my limited research, it looks like the Nikon R10 may be among the only consumer super8s with a parfocal lens. Looks like the 514XL specifically does not. Bummer about the fixed lens, and it looks like the way super8 is routed through the camera, you can't see the gate from the inside either. If you come across a can of air duster, maybe just blast it all through the nooks and crannies, otherwise, it's a good thing the dust doesn't bother you!

I wonder if folks are using 50d and in sunlight so the focus difference will be negligible at the higher apertures. Which would make sense. I can actually see the gate opening inside the camera, or at least the shutter. I'll try giving it a blast of compressed air. Good shout!

This is a great project (series of projects?). As somebody who knows very little about filming or cameras, I just assumed the fuzziness on the zooms and in some shots was intentional. Everything came together beautifully and cohesively. Looking forward to seeing more of what you do with it!

Lovely footage. It’s been fun following your journey from synthesizers to video art to Super 8 as it is so similar to my journey but in a different sequence. I’m a long-time 16mm filmmaker who got into synths during the pandemic and is now setting up a video synth/glitch studio. I think we might have a lot of the same issues!

I also have about 900 feet of colour 16mm (on beautiful, now discontinued Fuji Eterna stock) that I shot on a monthlong trip through Southeast Asia, and this is giving me ideas…
