I’m from Brazil living in Denmark. I wish the kids in the favelas of my country had the opportunities that I see here in Denmark everyday. Sometimes you are blessed and choose to ruin your own life like these dudes, pretending that u are living in some kind of gangsta movie. And I’m not saying that there’s no problems in Denmark,or that people can’t have hard times on first world countries. But this kind of behavior with so many opportunities.. unacceptable.

I'm a born and raised Dutchman, but I once visited a friend of mine who's from Northeast Philadelphia, which is considered one of the rougher parts of the city (and Philly is one of the rougher US cities). His entire neighborhood looked like an earthquake had just hit it, the roads and pavements were all cracked etc, it was clear the government had been ignoring the place for years. Me and my friend got takeout at a Chinese place that had the protection measures of a bank; I placed my order through a microphone with literally 3 layers of bulletproof glass being between me and the staff. I stayed at my friend's place for 2 days, and in those 48 hours I had not seen a single other white person (I was constantly stared at by everyone). Now, I also lived in Rotterdam westkruiskade, which is considered to be one of the rougher neighborhoods in the Netherlands (Rotterdam south is worse but I've been there plenty as well). Comparing that experience in Philly to the worst neighborhoods in the Netherlands... it's just not even a valid comparison. It's absurd how hiphop (don't get me wrong, I love hiphop) with its storytelling power, has romanticized ghetto life to a point where people in Europe are so immersed in their little fantasy that they actually believe they live that life...
@MoRo-qe6ng2 жыл бұрын
You dont have to go all the way to Philly to experience that stuff. Cities like Marseille and Naples look like they have been hit by an earthquake as well. The Netherlands is just an overdevelloped country. Thats why you were shocked when you saw it.
@Guidus1252 жыл бұрын
@@MoRo-qe6ng I see your point but I feel like there's a difference still. In Italy, roads and public buildings are poorly maintained pretty much across the board. There are plenty of exceptions ofcourse, but my point is that in Italy the extent to which a street looks like an earthquake just hit it is not correlated to welfare in the way that it is in the US. There are plenty of beautiful places in Italy where the locals have relatively high standard of living, yet public facilities aren't properly taken care of. Also, my comment is not derived from me experiencing solely the Netherlands and Philly ofcourse. I've been to 40+ countries that have varied widely in their standard of life quality. Btw my comment wasn't really referring to the south nor east of Europe. eg I have no doubt that Ukraine has plenty of rough neighborhoods too. But that's my fault, I should've been more specific rather than saying 'Europe'

@@Guidus125 people live in their own reality. When a person is struggling in the Netherlands, they would be off pretty well if they were the same way in a Chicago hood for example. Someone who is doing well in Kenia could be seen as poor in Denmark for example, eventhough the person in Kenia feels like they are off pretty well. So it doesn't matter how bad or good a place seems, the people living in it will always have their own reality.
@Guidus1252 жыл бұрын
@@caesar7723 Oh for sure, I agree with that and I'm by no means deflating anyone's struggle. It would be hypocritical of me to do so since I've been chronically depressed since kindergarten despite coming from a wealthy family and having an 'objectively perfect' life. And indeed, you can always compare it to someone's else's situation. No matter how shitty things might be, there is always someone who has it worse. yet, that doesn't devalue anyone's personal reality because if it did, logically it would mean that no one would feel like they have the right to feel affected by their situation. Psychologists have also known for a long time that one of the biggest determinants of happiness is derived from you comparing yourself to the direct peers around you, rather than someone in a developing a country. Okay i'm on a tangent here lol... but, my point was, I agree with you completely, but it doesn't take away that genres like drill hiphop music have become so synonymous to violence and crime that rappers have an incentive to exaggerate what goes on in their neighborhood (just google slim jesus and you'll see what I mean; he admits that everything he raps about is pure fiction). That's a clear contrast with for example 90s hiphop music from new york, because the neighborhoods that 90s rappers rapped about were statistically indeed really messed up. Anyways, i'm okay with art including fictional elements, for as long as its audience understands that it is fiction. But with modern drill hiphop I often feel like that criteria isn't met..

This is all thanks to Chicago, killing music is being spread everywhere!!! I am writing from Congo 🇨🇩 and I am also seeing a trend in African countries about drill music. I feel really sad because for people in the US that’s their real life on a daily basis where as the fans they just like the rhymes they be listening to. Personally in my country it’s very rare to hear a gun shot or hear o the news that someone got shot or died from a gun wound. I notice pretty much all comments talking about how these kids' "ghetto" looks like a very nice neighbourhood compared to whatever country the commenters are from, have something to compare to. While I agree these kids would feel very out of place in actual ghettos, and their neighbourhood looks similar to the very average neighbourhoods in my city in England, at times even like the posh ones, nothing like the poorest ones, it is all about perspective. Idk what Denmark is actually like, but probably for them, this is genuinely one of the worst neighbourhoods they've had to live in. They have nothing to compare to, unlike those of us who grew up in much rougher places. Still, from the sounds of it, it seems like these guys have a lot of opportunity available to them and I hope they don't get themselves into too much trouble before reality hits them! I hope they see how lucky they are. They seem like nice kids looking for identity.

I lived in DK for 3 years, I get what a lot of people are saying about it being a privileged society with a societal safety net that means there are opportunities for all. That's very much true and their rough, "ghetto" areas are nothing compared to some city areas I've lived in in the UK. I think what a lot of people aren't acknowledging though is the homogeneity and racism of Danish society. If you don't have Danish blood, if you're not Danish to the core you will never be fully accepted no matter how hard you try to integrate. Being part of a society that doesn't want you will do terrible things to your psyche. As they mentioned, the biker gangs often cause trouble with immigrant neighborhoods. No matter what socio-economic opportunities are available to them, these guys will always be considered outcasts beneath regular Danish society simply because they don't have Danish ancestry.

I know we as a country has trouble with racism, but saying it's a systemic thing is kind of false. There are a lot of xenophobic people in our country, especially against middle eastern people, due to how the media has portrayed middle eastern criminals and terrorists. But a Middle Eastern Danish person, is not being systemically held back by the Danish government. They will have just as many and equal valued opportunities as a regular Danish person, and, on my friend group at least, every Danish immigrant we know, we consider as 100% danish. The only "racist" opinion I have, is that if you come here as an immigrant and commit serious crimes like rape, armed robbery or murder, your should get deported asap, instead of getting like 5 more chances like you do in Denmark today. I know a lot of Danish people will not consider you a true dane based off of the color of your skin, but I would say that the majority, even though it might be a small majority, and most of the government itself, except for a few political parties, are very accepting of immigrants, and do consider them to be a valued part of our Danish society. A big factor that contributed to racism in Denmark, is the Danish media shedding a big light, on the immigrants who refuse to integrate into Danish society, by wanting sharia law and their extremism beliefs to happen in Denmark as well. The media is good at painting all middle eastern immigrants like that, despite it only being a select few. It's dumb fear mongering, and is unfortunately very effective. I know they exist, and that there are quite a few of them, but I have only met 1 or 2 muslims, who actually want sharia law in Denmark.
@cearig2 жыл бұрын
feeling like you stick out from your skin colour is a bullshit reason to turn to a life of crime when you have so many opportunities that you would never get in your parents' or grandparents' home country. the problem is a cultural one. many of the immigrant families in the west are coming from cultures which are simply incompatible with western cultures. not inferior or superior, just not compatible.

To everyone saying this lifestyle is a choice: there are other factors in a persons life other than money, beginning from your upbringing by your parents, to the friends you make - or are forced to make, to how society treats you. All of those factor into how your life takes shape, its not just about if the college is free or not. Keep in mind elementary education is free in most countries, even the ones you claim have the "worst ghettoes", and most kids end up on a bad path way before college becomes an issue. I get that some countries have it worse, but like another comment said every country has ghettoes and crime.

I kind of agree with you, even though; "Them". There is legit -1- rapper in pretty much danish hip hop history that has even mentioned chicago. With that said, chicago and california has obviously had a massive influence on "that life" in Denmark, or anywhere else for that matter, its pretty much where the entire rap genre started / got famous from. In regards to drill, while the original genre did start out off US - UK has made drill what it is. It has nothing to do with US drill, its an entirely different type of rap, and hence I don't even get the chicago references. As a Latino, it makes me laugh and sad to see these first-world children think they are gangsters! They live in a safe country, in a safe city and they think they are gangsters just because they get together between 20 and smoke marijuana and steal some bicycles, because there was a shooting in their neighborhood 5 years ago do they think they are gangsters? Because they wear nike caps, jordan shoes and use nike bags, they put on 3 tattoos, an earring and move a couple of grams from one side to the other, they already think they are pablo escobar, in his music videos about 30 guys come out and they come out with hoods and balaclavas and make gun gestures with their hands, they already think they are gangsters, for those who have noticed throughout Europe it is fashionable to play the thug, make yourself the most dangerous, do trap or drill and sing about gangs and weapons and drugs, in all European countries it is fashionable to be a thug and think you are poor, even though you grew up in a paved neighborhood and in buildings with elevators, you live in countries where you are about 12 times more likely to die by suicide than to die by homicide ! If you take these thugs that appear in this video to the Latin favelas or Latin zones where the narcos, the guerrillas, mega gangs rule and they would see how things are in Latin America, they would pee in their pants and call their mothers, in Latin America where there are 42 of the 50 most dangerous cities in the world, where a 9-year-old boy is already a hitman, where at 13 they drive an ak47 and at 20 many criminals have already killed 30 people, dismembered them, decapitated them and took them out the heart, they put them in acid, they feed them to the dogs, you see that these that appear in the video only with some first world children who think they are gangsters!

All "hoods" operate on different levels, Europe has generally high living standards compared to America, or other countries. However poverty is a mixture of a state of mind, and economic/social pressures. I'm from London so there's some hoods on the outskirts that look relatively quite nice, however they can be quite "active." In all capitalist societies you need a poor population to do the dirt for the rich, so in these kinda places drug dealing and other kind of underground activities will always appeal to certain kind of people, and public housing seems to be a perfect breeding ground somehow. And anyway, in most hoods the criminal population is actually a small percentage of the area, they just make the most noise.

People overlook a lot of things when they say that it's a choice and not a lifestyle. Elementary stuff is explained in the video like: the ghettolist. Drugs, violence and small gangs makes a terrible place to grow up in, even if education is free. If you're and outsider (immigrant) you're always treated differently, by everyone in society to some degree, and as a kid often "forced" to make friends with other outcasts, and thus you influence each other growing up. Yea, the ghettos don't look bombed and are not riddled with gunshots and daily stabbings, but stuff like drugs plays a massive role too. There is A LOT of factors that determine how you will live your life: your parents, where you grew up and the people you're surrounded by plays a role. To a certain degree we inherit our parents values, social status, problems, interests, behavior and abilities; which can of course be both positive and negative. But if you grew up as an immigrant, with parents who are jobless, on government income, with no interest in integrating into society, no education, low social status, and no faith in authority I'd wager you'd be hard pressed to break the mold and become a class A citizen.

I’m originally from Pakistan but I moved to pine hills Orlando for a better life. Even tho it’s considered “the worst hood in Orlando”, it’s nothing like Pakistan was with shootings and murders and crime everyday everywhere. It makes me sad to see how these kids ignore so many opportunities given to them in a country like the USA.
