You seem like you are a good guy and trying to be helpful so thanks. But, I couldn't hear the noises over the music and when you were trying to show the cassette moving, your camera was moving so I couldn't get a lock on that to see what you were taking about. All in all I'd have to just take your word for it!

help!! I have a problem with my bb or needing new bearings?? What happens is when i pedal backwords there is a not so good noise coming off the bb/bearings? There is a slight bit of movement when i start to pedal properly (foreword) too... I have a XT crank and hope hubs the chain is not loose bent or anything. I have looked to see if i can find what it could be but not found anything so reaching out to see if anyone knows what this could be?. I think the bearings need replaced but was not like this the last time it was used.... No strange noises when pedal... thanks

The one I'd like to know about is the grinding/creaking noise the cassette on my Trek Verve 2 is making. I recently had the wheel replaced with a stronger wheel from Bontrager and when I started riding it, the drivetrain made so much noise that I lubricated the chain twice on the same ride. The shop that put on the new wheel said that the chain and cassette were burned out and replaced both. The drivetrain is still making noise that feels like nails on a chalkboard. This may sound like heresy, but I'd really like to replace the cassette with a freewheel (like my Townie has). That bike is quieter and gives me less trouble.

Just want to share this in case it can help. I installed an 11-speed 105 R7000 group on my bike and struggled since a couple of months with the transmission being very noisy after cycling 50Km. It drove me nuts... And after reading forums and trying out various options, I followed the advice to change the lubricant. And yess! From wax (Squirt wax and Morgan Blue wax) I switched to Rock n Roll gold and no noise anymore!! Never again wax for me ;)

Reinstall the make sure that it is tight enough . Because if it off a bit it can have the wobble if nothing else is bent.

Hm, my brand new bike (1 week, 120km) does make noise at the rear hub. I first thought it was the brakes. Then I removed the dork disk and 80% of the noise was gone. I suspect the rest comes from a slightly stretched shifter cable. Let's hope it's not something serious.

I have this issue on a wheel from a new bike still under warranty. Cassette wobbles while freewheeling but it also makes a scoring noise, like metal to metal contact as if the bearings are running dry. Any thoughts?

It always moves, i've never seen a free hub that didn't...that play is normal. The gear slips when you pedal backwards because there is an angle between the chain and front and rear cogs while using that gear combination.

@@cannondany Most of the Shimano hubs do this and they know it. It's why some freehubs are shimmed really loose from factory and it causes other problems later on down the the track. If you try to re-shim the excess play out of the freehub you end up with the wobble like in your video.

Damn I have this exact same problem on mz new road bike with Shimano HG31 cassette and Claris derailleur. The chain sags when pedaling hard backwards on smaller cogs and there is this annozing clicking sound when riding the bike.The shifting works without anz problem though. What solution would you suggest in this case?

Yes. Halo sealed bearing and freehub. Absolutely no run out at all. Was going to suggest a comparison with Deore cup and cone, but pointless, as there's no comparison. Shimano = cheap and nasty.

I have a problematic noise problem, and could *really* use some advice. I've had my Giant Defy Advanced 2 for a week, and only went on two rides. However, when at home, I accidentally dropped the bike on its right side. MAYBE, that is what's causing the following noise: when outside, I start pedaling by transferring my weight onto a pedal to begin pedaling, I hear a "DONK" kind of noise emanating somewhere from the rear. Could that be a bent derailleur or something of the sort? It only happens when I start movement by transferring my weight onto one of the pedals. If anyone could help, I would be very grateful! That sounds like your gears just need adjustment/tune up. Consider taking it in to have it adjusted if u dont know how to do it its actually a pretty easy fix! That grinding sound is your chain against the metal bracket harness on your front sprocket

The body in the cassette is the problem. I have the same problem with my bike that make so many noises when I gonna ride it. I will replace a new body, then I hope that the problem solved.

Deore hubs are not yet sealed bearing I have the same problem. You can put grease on those bearings It can help but it csnt solve the issue permanently.I also recommended to buy a new hubs.

I have just noticed the same problem, BUT I think this happened after I dismantled my hub, and didn't re-tighten it sufficiently. I think it might be worth removing the hub's lock ring and tightening the cassette. Otherwise, maybe the hub bearings are unevenly worn and could be replaced...?

Cassettes always move slightly even with brand new cassette and freehub. It’s not an issue unless you have huge movements. The skipping when back pedalling is only improper tuned gears unless running top cassette top chainring which you probably wouldn’t use anyway.

The cassette moving is not really a problem, but if you dont like how it is then you could just take the freehub and grease it or do a proper service on your rear hub.

If you index and still have chain rub on the 5,6,7 gears ( smaller sprockets) it is a clear sign the sprocket teeth are facing the wrong way on those gears. Change to the big ring and to the 6th gear now look at the chain on top of the 6th gear... sping the back wheel very slowly as the chain moves as well look at the sprocket teeth!!! Are they in the middle of the chain or towards the outside ( away from cassette or towards the top of the cassette? They must be in the middle or your chain will rub on the next gears making a grinding / dragging noise. Remember when you install a new cassette you must also install a new chain and also front rings, although no bike shop ever tells you this. I have a Surface freewheel that had the 6 and 7 cog teeth facing away from the bike so it was impossible to use those gears as the chain dragged. So I removed those sprockets and shaped the teeth towards the middle ( more towards the freewheel) and that fixed the problem. I have done this to 2 freewheels now that had the same friken issue.

I had this issue with a new set of wheels with SLX hubs. RMA'd them but that didn't solve my problem. The guy from the shop called me and asked if I wanted a refund. They didn't even offer a replacement. It turned out that every single rear hub(even higher-end ones) they had in stock had this issue. I talked with their engineer and the guy explained quite well that for this (cone) construction was virtually impossible to get 100% axis alignment. He said it's not a big deal as long as it was within certain tolerances. So yeah... Blame Shimano for selling inferior technology for huge markups.

Mechanically the clicking noise is a few engaging flaps that are locked to go in a certain direction and are spring loaded. When your going backwards, it runs over a curved edge and then hits a sudden point when it goes to a low spot producing the noise. If you ride it forwards, these flaps engage and take your forces been applied and direct them into the wheel creating rotational force to the ground.

I Never used a freehub. but freewheels are known for this issue due to the actual hub not being machined perfectly. Try removing your cassette and trying every possible position if possible. For example on a square taper bottom bracket you have 4 different positions to mount crank arms... one position is always the most true due to not perfect machining of the crank arms. And clean the mating surfaces of the cassette and even the free hub maybe. Also its possible your cone and bearings need cleaning /replacing and new grease. this could possibly cause the movement of your cassette if the ball bearings arent running properly, then a slight wobble on the hub may he seen on your cassette? Also check for a bent axle. also your chain is trying to jump a gear could be caused by lower limit of rear derailer slightly off. during load the chain may seem to slip once in a while. but its just trying to change gears intermittently.

improper cassette install. If you want it perfect you need to use wheel balancer or other contraption, lessen the cassette nut and under light tenntion you can tap it to alignment than tight the cassette nut to 120% of spec. It's tedious and time-consuming but It worked for me on both our bikes

Wobbling cassette issue is normal for disc-brake bicycles, because when braking, the force is put only on the left-side of the free-hub, and in time, the free-hub will get a little twisted(mm ranges) because of the braking force.V-brakes bicycles on the other hand don't have this, because the brake is applied on both sides of the rim. Personally I haven't seen a disc-brake bicycle which does not have this issue.

First thing is always check the distance on the back wheel nut forks where the tire meets the seat tube as the wheel had to be lined up properly there . I have a $300 GMC Denali road bike that does not wobble, yet my dad's bike is identical and had a wobbling cassette . The Shimano rear derailleur is actually the problem causing this issue even on new cassette's. The Shimano rear derailleur has a spring that needs lube. The wobbling is due to a shitty non aligned cassette or the rear derailleur is not lined up properly with the cassette. But the main issue is Chain grinding warping the cogs due to the chain not being perfectly straight with the front ring vs cog on back. Basically I have discovered that you can not have 7 cogs on the back yet there is millions of these bikes out there . 3 rings x 2 gears each ring means 6 gears total ( no cross chaining). So a 21 speed road bike with 3 rings and 7 cogs only has 6 really in reality gears . The reason is very simple use your fucking brains since the chain has to be aligned with the front ring and back derailleur section including the cassette cogs and jockey wheels you really have only 6 gears total!!!!. It is pointless to have more than 6 cogs on the cassette with 3 rings and with 2 rings 4 cogs on the cassette. But !!! pros have 12 cog cassette! WTF How the fu℅℅! . That is why they cost $5000 because of the hardware they add to the bike in order to use those 12 cogs with only 2 rings without chain rubbing. Go to a bike shop and look at the Pro bikes , pay attention to the Chain!!!!!

Sadly, a freehub is not mendable at that stage. Replacing it is the only solution, which is shameful to both the customers and the enviroment. It'd only change if manufacturers/fabricants were forced to take these garbage parts back and if they then were forced to recycle them to, at least 98%. It worked in other industries and it would work in the cycling industry as well. P.s. capitalism (in any couleur) doesn't work. It is, with fascism, the worst choice of state systems.
