Noisy window air conditioner A/C fan bearing

Over all a very good how to video especially since it was your first. I was a window air conditioner specialist since I performed all kinds of repairs to about 3,000 window acs in the 1980s from 1979 until 1989. I had my own shop and was the best at window ac repair in the St.Louis Missouri area. I do want to point out one thing where I believe you made an error in judgment. There is a reason that ac is designed for water to puddle in front of the condenser and that is so the spinning fan blade picks up some of the water and sprays it across that hot condenser in order to efficiently cool it. By drilling that hole now the head pressure will run higher than it was designed for therefore shortening the life of the compressor. A better remedy although more time consuming would have been to cleaned the rust away and repainted it with a high quality rust resistant paint. There were some great old work horses made in the 1960s, real energy hogs but if taken care of some of those acs would last for 20 plus years. I liked the old whirlpools and the old Frederick window acs. They had those heavy barrel shaped compressors that were bigger at the bottom than the top and the compressors were externally sprung which cut down on a lot of internal compressor problems and made them run very quiet.

I'm doing the same job as in the video and I noticed the copper pipes in the bottom of the radiator are getting corroded from being submerged in water - three different metals together in water seems like bad idea. Anyway i was going to make drain holes that could be plugged somehow and then just drain at the end of the day. Do those pipes rust through or does the oxidized layer stop it from getting worse?

I Would suggest reading all of the comments before starting this project. I just read... “I suggest marking the location of the armature on the shaft just in case it slides.” I got into this and I’m pretty sure the armature slid and I’m a little uncertain of where exactly it’s suppose to sit, would it be exactly centered between where the two c-clips go? Looks like I’ll be buying a new air conditioner after all... UPDATE: It does appear that the armature sits centered between where the two c-clips go. I put it all back together and it’s working great! I still recommend reading all the comments to get all the helpful hints before you dive in. Thanks to Mike for this vid!

I have a 15.1KBTU Frigidaire unit. Both bearings back up against an OD snap ring on either side of the armature. On my unit, there is a groove in the shaft to accept the snap ring. If the snap ring isn't there but the groove is, you know one is missing & mystery solved. If the assembly on your particular unit relies solely on the interference (press) fit between the bearing ID and shaft, then the mystery continues.....

I have the same air conditioner and replaced the bearings in it after seeing this video. Before starting I wanted to have the bearings with me so I didn't have to wait for them to arrive while the air conditioner was in pieces. I found someone else's comment that shared which bearings they were but I'm going to share it again if someone else considers performing this fix. I was surprised to find out that they are just skateboard bearings. This is what I ordered from Amazon. 608-Z Shielded Sealed Miniature Skateboard-Bearings - 8x22x7mm

This is the first video I found that addresses the same noise my Kenmore 12,000btu unit has been making on and off for the past week or so. I thought about buying a new ac for around $300, but being an ex motorcycle technician, I decided to find out if my suspensions were correct because of failed bearings and if so replace them myself. I looked online for a parts catalogue for the bearings with no results. I knew if it had bearings like in this video, there would be a bearing number on them and I would buy quality bearings, NOT made in China like the original ones are made, which is why they don't last. As soon as you turned your ac on and I heard the sound it made, I knew I found the right video because it's the same noise mine makes. I just wish I had a bearing number so I could buy them first so I could do the job in one shot. Thanks for this video. Now for the fun part.

I love the way you made this video. I'm from Iowa and the first thing I said was "cool accent!" Not sure where it's from. Simply pointing to the places where you took the screws out I've not seen before but I caught on quick what you were doing. I like that you have a different approach. Different is cool. And I love the part where you added this was your very first video! You seem very humble and easy to understand. I followed this video exactly, and it didn't fix my issue! But you or I did nothing wrong! Thanks for your excellent work making this! I have a much newer Frigidaire unit, and they have switched to rivets to hold the motor halves, and after carefully drilling all (5!) of those out, I discovered there is also an internal steel envelope in the motor with a pretty beefy pinch weld ALL THE WAY AROUND. I'll attack it another day, and document my failure or success to hopefully help others in the future!

Very useful video. I just replaced the noisy bearings in a Frigidaire 6500 BTU a/c unit w skateboard bearings. Sounds a lot better. Lost a little skin on my knuckles pulling things apart. The a/c was working fine and I had cleaned the cooling fins with soap and water, and even though I ran it for 10 minutes or so after the cleaning (to dry any water that might have gotten in the bearings), 3 days later the fan was frozen and needed a push to start and one of the bearings was making noise. I would suggest that anyone cleaning their a/c run it right away for at least 30 minutes or so, and do it again the next day too. It doesn't seem to take much to compromise the bearings.

I just want to say THANK YOU for this video. My air conditioner had the exact same problem, and I was able to use the exact same solution. By the way, I also learned that the Z on 608Z bearings refers to the enclosed sides. 608Z theoretically means the bearing has one enclosed side, and 608ZZ theoretically means the bearing has two enclosed sides. But they stamp the number ON THE SIDE PIECE of the bearing before assembly, so the side doesn't know whether it will be part of a bearing with one side or two! I took out a bearing stamped 608Z and received bearings stamped 608ZZ which I was almost going to return before I found that out. My air conditioner is quiet and cold. Again THANKS!

Hello everyone, I had the same problem, but my A/C Window unit was a newer model! It was a bit of a pain to get that motor out, but I got it out. The motor in my Frigidaire AC is a Wellington Motor YKTS-35-50L, The bearing part number 608Z Nzsb, tiny little bearings. But I recommend that you make sure you can do the job, get access to your motor, be able to remove the motor and take the motor apart to gain access to your bearings before you go buying bearings. This was a very helpful video and thank you "mike mike" for making this video. So if you have noise when turning on your A/C unit, typically its a bearing, and these bearings are cheap like if $5bucks for some bearings! Better than buying a whole new AC LOL. Rather save a couple $$$ lol. Btw: Amazon does have these bearings listed and for sell.

I just took one of my window AC's out and did a deep clean on it as I do every year, but this time i must have gotten some water in the motor bearings. 2 days later when running it before putting it all back together, I'm getting the grinding crunchy sound from the bearings. I've owned 5 of those same AC units. 3 of them were 12,000 BTUs and the other 2 were 8,000 BTU. All 5 were the Frigidaire and had the exact same front panel as yours the only difference was the BTU rating between my 2 units. All of them have had bearing issues as well as the Phillips screws that hold the motor mount down to the unit we're all rusted out as well. This window AC unit was probably the worst window AC unit to try to clean. Some manufacturers make it super easy to remove the motor and the fan unit that way you can clean it easier but Frigidaire definitely is not one of those manufacturers. I spent a total of $2,600 on my 5 AC units. All five failed in the middle of the second season. In other words about 1 1/2 years after I bought them. Good thing they have that 1 year warranty. 🤔

Hi Mike. Saw your video and managed to remove the motor. Need to also change the bearings but came to a standstill. I unscrewed the housing for the motor and removed it. My problem is the shaft won’t come off from one side of the housing. The 2 clips are all off of each side of the shaft but one side of the housing to slide off the shaft won’t let me do it. The housing seems to be bolted to the shaft as I can’t just slide it off. You mentioned in your video about reverse thread on the shaft. Do I turn the housing counterclockwise to remove the one side of the shaft that seems to be bolted?

Thanks for this video! I get ACs alot for free because people run them without filters or proper cleaning, and after years they clogged up and don't work.. I've gotten many that I cleaned, but trashed the bearings because of cleaner or water getting into them no matter how hard I tried. I've even tried soaking them in heavy oil, no luck. Never thought I could replace them, I guess they are fairly standard bearing sizes.

I have a Frigidaire FFRH0822R1 window heat pump that developed the same problem when I fired it up again after some very cold weather. It is nice to know the fix will be inexpensive if I'm willing to put in the work. As to the rust in the pan, I've wondered for a why even more expensive units don't make that section from stainless steel or adonized aluminum. I'm also curious if a sacrificial anode (similar to that used in water heaters) could reduce or eliminate the corrosion.

I added a drainage hole to my 22 year old window unit. When it rained heavily and my gutters overflowed (lazy maintenance) it would make a god awful noise. It's a GE and still working, I've never removed from the window during the winter either.

Thanks AC unit is back to working a little bit quieter again, my Haier until used a 608z bearings which I had to used my Dremel and carfully cut them off the shaft. Then was able to snag a 10 pack of 608 2rs from Amazon for $7 and used a sprinkler riser attached to a coupler to hammer them in. Thank you again saved me at least $140 vs buy another unit

I just cleaned my 12,000 btu Kenmore and now am having that same noise issue. What Happens if i just let it run? Will it eventually eat shit? How long would it last it's running way cooler than it ever did. Tbh it was so dirty i now know why it struggled so badly last year. Regardless i have it in energy saving mode till this weekend when i can pull it back apart and probably replace that damn bearing. I don't imagine the bearing will be salvageable

Just a few comments to add to this excellent video for people with minimal tools/experience like me: Skateboard bearings worked for me. My bearings were 608Z and 608 ZRS worked fine. Curious to see how long they stay quiet Like Mike says, take photos of the way things are put together before they are removed and different types of screws and where they come from. Also the spindle is different on either side so take a photo that reminds you how it came out of the motor (longer threads on fan end, etc.) The two fender washers did not fit with the lock washer, small washer, and screw, so I had to replace one of the fender washers with the one I had with a smaller hole and it worked fine. Mark the edges of the armature in the beginning - it moved for me but was easy to set on the edge of a wood surface and hammer the spindle until it went back in place. Sand the spindle with a very fine sandpaper before removing the old bearings and oil with something like WD-40.

This is an awesome video and dead on for what was wrong with my window unit which was making the same noise. I did have a different model number and different bearing numbers. When i removed the motor i had separate the front half of the motor from the rear. It was sealed with some sort of metal connection which i drilled out and then it came apart. I purchased two bolts and locking nuts to reassemble the motor. All went well. AC is up and running with no bearing noises. Thanks!

Found your video because I just put my AC in, same as the one you have and the bearings sound like crap. It will do for now, but I won't be running it when I am sleeping for now. I'll get it tore down and grab some bearings. I actually worked for an electric motor repair shop for about 4 years so the motor part is easy for me. Word of advice, get some pullers to pull the bearings. Even if you have to do a loan a tool its worth it. When it comes to installing the new ones you can actually heat the inner race and the bearing will literally fall down the shaft. Saves from beating on the shaft. Also bearings are 99% chance nothing special. They are generally something like a 605, 602, etc, and they are either sealed or they are not.

@@JTrotter54 I just tore it down in order of how I saw best. Once the outer shell was off I took off the Styrofoam pieces, unbolted the support brackets and worked my way around to undo the wiring. Once I had it out I had to drill out some rivets that were holding the two sides of the motor case together, then slid it apart, and did my thing to put it back together. Just as quiet as the day I got it.

@@JTrotter54 Those aren't orings. Those are wave washers. They go between the bearing and the motor case. They help the rotor "float" in the housing.

i think they both came from one side correct? also the armature may have shifted a little, is there any way to tell if it's sitting at the correct position? i saw skid marks on the shaft and tapped it back to cover those marks... thank you for your help!

Used a metal putty knife just to get in started. Move careful around, a little bit at a time. Then used a chisel to get it the rest of the way.

Those fan motors have poorly engineered casings that fail to protect the bearings from moisture. Regardless, if you don’t wet them, they’ll still get wet from the blower wheel sucking in evaporator condensation, and still rust them out to where they’re screachers. ...and then those screws... OMG!!! they rust out to the point that they’re an obstruction to your disassembly work, or rendered completely useless. To people who wish to DIY these compact units: Get some Easy-Out reverse bits for those worn screws, a drill, a long Bosch extension bit for those floor pan screws mounting the fan assembly to the pan, a 2-3 foot long Phillips screwdriver, to tighten those same screws, some cork tape, and some new stainless steel replacement screws. Stainless steel screws aren’t magnetic, but a tiny amount of cork tape helps the screw stick to the screw driver, in hard-to-reach places.

My fans were not pressed on. They had straight shafts. But one end had a "reverse thread", meaning you turn the nut clockwise(like you are tightening it) to unscrew it.

A good DIY trick would be to put the shaft and bearings in the freezer for some hours before reassemble.

This was an excellent video thanks so much I don’t know what it is about these window units from Frigidaire I had bought mine and I don’t know if it was because it was on its side are at work but I used it for like four months only as I wanted some Extra cooling In my bedroom and all the sudden the same thing happened to mine it was actually a good thing because I cleaned it out As here in Southwest Florida things get pretty nasty from the humidity I ended up getting a couple sets just in case and I’ll tell you what it sounds quieter than It did in the first place

Thank you, I had this exact problem. Unfortunately I had a terrible time removing the old bearings. I looked up some low tech methods that didn’t involve getting extra tools, and after getting a bunch of scratches on my hands and arms, it’s running quietly again! Hopefully it last a while before some other part inside breaks.

Mike Mike, I have the same exact issue you describe & show in your video here. I went in and gave the unit a good cleaning. It made a slight difference but the major issue is still there. The model number of my unit is LRA087AT7 and it is an 8,000 BTU unit. Was wondering if you knew or could find what ball bearings it would need to accomplish this task? I also took a picture of the motor area and can give you info off of that if it would help you.

Look at your bearings. You will find a part number printed on it/them. This isn't rocket science guys. If you are willing to undertake the task then you can find the numbers and order them online from your choice of purveyors. Just 'Google' a/c motor bearings (or drop the "a/c") and the number that you found. You can do this without someone holding your hand and guiding you to and through each step. (It's good that you don't have to look up the information in an actual book with pages, a table of contents, and an index. Look those terms up if they are new to you. Don't EVEN ask where).

I have the same problem with my window AC. Also Frigidaire but different model. I haven't opened my motor yet but can you tell me if your motor is a YSK33-6AS? If so, I'll just go ahead and order these bearings.

Mine says YSK90-4AF Welling. I don't know if the bearings would be the same.

Ahh, I don't know for certain but I have to assume the "90" indicates a larger motor, and likely a larger shaft. Thanks for the quick reply; maybe my bearings will have a part number on them too.

David, I ordered mine from a company in Sunrise, Florida, Roda Victoria, on Wed., and received them via First Class Mail on Sat. Mine are #608 ZZ. I bought the SKF Explorer, made in Italy. They cost a little more, but hopefully they'll last longer than that Chinese crap. Hope this helps.

The part number is on the bearings. Like 6201zz or something--and you order them by that. If there is a unique shaft size- it will say 6201zz-1/2 (for 1/2 inch) for example. However everyone is saying skatboard bearings work- and they are a dime a dozen.

Wow, great video. Didnt know it was possible and I have the same problem. It seems like you did a lot more work than I had expected. Do you have a guestimate as to how many hours you spent. Perhaps 10-20? Not sure that I can justify that with mine since it dates to the 90s or early 2000s. But at least now I know..or I have a project for a snowy day next January. Thanks again! Definitely bad for your ears, and possibly even bad for your sanity. Mine sounded like a frieght train traveling through my house at a high rate of speed. Maybe if you can bear the nosie, your A/C still has time.

These darn bearing should be sealed bearings. Water getting in kills them.

Jason - look @ the reply below from Want2Race - specifically at the bearing model. The "2RS" in that model description stands for "2 rubber seals" - which is an upgrade from the OEM bearings for sure. Every bearing manufacturer has their own twist on sealing nomenclature, so - when you go to order your bearings - google the catalog for the bearing manufacturer in question and check their nomenclature for the sealing options in their bearings, then order your bearings with the sealing method suited for your application. The other thing that people don't realize is that some of the AC manufacturers put a rubber ring on the shaft in front of the bearing that acts as a "flinger" of sorts to keep water out of the bearing when the shaft is spinning. It's better than nothing, and certainly re-install it if you replace bearings, but it is no proxy for a properly sealed bearing for the weather side of these units.

So everyone will know the best called for oil for these fractional horsepower motors is straight 20 weight. For those that only need a small amount and don't want to purchase a whole quart, the Three In One oil that has the blue top is the proper oil to lubricate these motors with. The regular three in one machine oil if memory serves has a red top and a red colored can. That oil along with WD-40 is okay to clean with but for long lasting lubrication the 20 weight oil is what is supposed to be used.

I probably had about 3 or 4 hours total, but I take my time too. I could probably do it in less than an hour if I had to do it a second time.
