What’s the first thing to test if nothing happens when you plug it in? I found a newer frigidair and nothing happens. The thing looks like it fell out a window. I laughed my ass off. But. This ac is exactly the same as one I bought a year ago. So if some of the parts are good I wanna salvage. Nice vid. I should be able to test lots of components now anyway.

This is the most comprehensive video I have ever seen. Thanks to you I got my Frigidaire 18500 btu wall ac unit working today. I was about to buy a new one for $699, then I decided to watch your video. Since I am not very handy, I was willing to try a few of the test. I started out with the easiest one. I turned on the unit, the fan was turning as usual but no cooling. The compressor did not kick. I went outside pry open the cover enough for my chisel to touch the body of the compressor. I wacked it a little. And voila, the buzzing sound of the compressor was better than that of any performer in the x-factor or America got talents. The temperature inside as I am typing this is a wonderful 71 degrees. just the way I like it. The entire 1200 square foot house is cooled. Thank you so much, you are a savior today and an inspiring teacher.

Thank you for giving me the knowledge and confidence to repair my 2 year old , just out of warranty a Hisense it is a piece of crap, 16000btu ran 8 months then just stopped, every other person on the tube just acted like I was a complete fool, does it have power , is your AC clean , how about filter , is it plugged in. Does it have Gass in it. You are a scholar and a gentleman, just subscribed to your channel. You helped me fix my AC . Very grateful for the valuable knowledge, you cut to the chase, no BS . Thanks again.:)

I'm only at 5:53 and I'm very impressed! I' helped a neighbor that's a senior with COPD and she purchased last year a new 6000 BTU window unit that I installed. 2 weeks later she calls and there was a problem. The compressor was running but fan didn't spool up. I reached in to see if the motor seized and spun the squirrel cage and to my surprise the motor continued to spin but only as fast as I could spin the cage, once the cage was spinning it kept going at that low RPM until it was shut off but again refused to start on it's own so I actually don't know what the hell the problem is. She couldn't get a warranty replacement because she bought it at SEARS so she replaced it again and gave me the first one. Now I have another neighbor with breathing problems and I would like to give her this system but I needed to know how much it would cost to fix (I'm going to give it to her as a surprise she's on a pension) but have no idea what the trouble is. I googled for help and your video was a suggestion. Never seen a better explanation of a DIY video ever! Sub'd! I will be definitely be reviewing your channel and I will be a contributor in the future. Perfect attitude for a KZbin channel owner. Thanks, I hope to test the capacitor this week. Superb video!

A 2007 Samsung window air conditioner stopped working. Following your great instructions, I found a bad capacitor. These were readily available and now it runs fine. I have a bad back, so lifting this 34 pound machine was out of the question. I put a tall stool next to the window and laid one end of a ladder on top of the stool, and the other end of the ladder on the floor. I put a small wood board on the ladder and was able to slide the machine up/down to the window with ease. Saved my back!!!

Great video. I systematically went thru the steps u identified. Cleaned out all of the rat droppings, prob filled my shop vac. Thermostat checked ok, switch worked, power to the compressor good, capacitor passed my test using upgraded meter, impedance on the compressor wiring was ok. When I reattached COMMON, START and RUN, it worked so I concluded that the connectors oxidized after 27 years. Removed again, sprayed with contactor cleaner, hopefully I get another 27 years.

I love your videos and I’v followed you for years. I’ve come back to this video a few times per year since you posted it… When troubleshooting units for friends or family. Would be awesome if you made another video about window units, looking at one that has a circuit board controller. A lot of the boards fail, most commonly because of a bad electrolytics or the board mounted relay. You could go over diagnosing those issues, repairing, or if that fails… How to hotwire the machine and have it run on medium settings when plugged in without the need of a circuitboard. Essentially bypassing the circuitboard. I’ve done a board bypass on many units, probably over a dozen. But two very important things to consider… Don’t hotwire it so that it’s always on highest fan speed. Low or medium fan speed will give it a much longer life. Also, you can use a timed outlet for 15 to 30 minutes… So that the unit doesn’t stay on longer than it should and overheat. Or you can actually buy an outlet that has a thermostat built-in. So when the area around the thermostat reaches a certain temperature it automatically cuts power. ALSO… I always add a very high amperage switch in between the wall outlet and GFCI cord coming from the unit. That way cutting on and off isn’t causing arcing by plugging or unplugging the unit. Instead using a very high amperage switch in between. Usually rated 25% greater than the actual starting amps needed. That’s a much safer approach, and still allows someone to remove the circuitboard and have a more reliable unit. Love your videos! And would love a follow up video! These things can be had for free, only a few years old… You can find them everywhere. From on the side of the road to your local scrapyard or landfill. I can’t tell you how many dozens of units I found that are less than five years old, new were close to $1000, and only need minor tweaking or troubleshooting.

... so I might have salvaged a roadside window AC unit with this knowledge... Thanks. That was a 300 plus device I salvaged for a little less than 30 bucks.

Thank you, much, for this video. I would like to know more about the valves and other pressure-regulating components, out of curiosity. I'm actually researching the clicking noises my working window unit makes, just for the science. I do notice separate expansion/contraction sounds, but there are other audible flowing noises that make no sense to me....

@ 8:50 how do you know which goes where? The blades are identical and no marks of any kind were made when they got pulled. Does it matter if they get switched? (Edit:) Finally there's a script flag @ 9:51 to do this. Would def. have to watch this through several times before attempting to DIY my unit. TKS.

Nice detailed video. Would anyone know what may be going on with my sharp window ac unit. Approximately 5 years old was running great until today. However when it runs i don't hear the compressor kick on its just the fan constantly running without the motor running and it doesn't even cycle on and off. I hear and feel the fan and even the air feels pretty cool coming out of the vent but it doesn't seem to be cooling the whole room at all like it used to. Before all parts of the room would get very cool when it was set to 65 to 69 degrees. Now the rooms barely seems that cold. I cleaned the filter and fins on the coil. They weren't that bad. Any input on this?

Fantastic, and yes, I also have watched many other AC repair videos on YT, and VERY few if any come close to my video, which is why I made this video. People needed a better video.

I have an 18000 BTU window unit that now is a bit more frequent of the compressor stops. Should I follow the same procedure at 18:00 for testing the compressor? Thanks.

Sir at 3:23 right where your finger is pointing when I was washing the unit I noticed a lot of rust and corrosion and a little green oxidation on the copper coils is this a sign of a leak coming soon or is this common and the longevity is still intact 🤔

Salt air corrosion, no leak.

Had a 20 year old Fedders 14,000 not a single problem. Then on summer the wall plug shows the paddles are scorched and some of the metal is missing. Changed the plug and it ran another month then when it got above 90 outside the 20amp circuit breaker tripped at the service panel. Then during the next 90+ degree weather the compressor would trip after 20-40 minutes. No other connectors showed and visible scorching. It appears from your video the compressor most likely has seen its best days?? How does the compressor internally fail? What actually happens? Thanks

Excessive current draw is usually due to a faulty compressor. The compressor can become more difficult to start up under pressure, and that means more current required, and more heating of the windings. Thanks for the video. My windows AC unit just all of a sudden started kicking the breaker and someone told me it could be the capacitor. I have a good background in electronics but not so much in AC. I am going to check the cap with my component checker and see if that is the culprit. My central air isn't working either so I am going to check that cap as well. I'll update my comment when I find out what's going on with the. At least you gave me some things to check and how to check them.

Hope you figure it out. Good luck!

@@electronicsNmore Had the capacitors checked and the one for my window unit is good and I checked all the other components and it seems (from what you show in the video) that my compressor is bad. The cap for my central AC was bad and I got a new one but there is still an issue with it. I think the expansion valve(?) could be bad and it might need a recharge as well.

Great video. My 8000 btu Frigidaire (built 11/2014) has bearing failure and is very noisy. Seems to be a common problem with Frigidaire window units. I'm going to tear it down at season's end and replace the bearings in the motor. Do you know where I can buy them? I've seen another repair video where the guy said he got skate board bearings that fit? I appreciate any assistance.

I’ve gone thru everything from replacing the capacitor, contactor switch, adding a 2 wire hardstart kit. Tested everything and I still get a medium frequency humming sound then it makes a clicking sound and stops humming. There was one wire contact that looked burnt on one side of the contact but not on the other side, it was at the L1 and a black wire coming from the 220 outlet cord. Also coming from the outlet cord into the unit is a spliced white wire going to the common on cap and to the L2 on contactor. Along with a ground going to chassis. Is the unit Kaput or can you think of anything else? Thanks again
