I used to have that phone! Under the front facing camera is not a notification light, it’s a pressure sensitive button for Shortcuts. Also, if you long press the end call button the voice assistant appears. Bounce was iconic
@zdanee2 жыл бұрын
I had this in red for many years. The top right "xpress music" thing is not only a light, it's also a shortcut for the music app. I don't think the barren Ovi Appstore contributed much to the demise of this, we Symbian users installed apps the old fashioned way back then: downloaded shady installer files from the web and sel-signing them on our home PCs. If I remember correctly there was also a CPU speed limit when it came out it only run at 396MHz, but in the software upgrade that enabled kinetic scrolling they unlocked the CPU and it became 434MHz. I used Opera Mini back then so the default Nokia browser was no issue, and it had double the screen resolution of the iPhone which was nice. You could also run the older Symbian apps and games that were designed for a non-touchscreen use, and use a virtual keypad. As for that virtual keyboard: the default setting was a T9 on portrait and a full qwerty in landscape, so basically when you wanted to enter a longer text, you used in landscape, but you could answer a text on the T9 with one hand if you preferred. The reason Nokia used a resistive touchscreen is most likely because it was a mature technology and very cheap with great precision, while capacitive screens were still new, expensive and delicate. The screen was also pressure-sensitive so it wasn't only touch or no-touch, but a level of pressure could be read too, some drawing apps made use of it. It also had a TV-output on the headphone jack, you can use the same cable for it that came with the N95. I think it was an important device for Nokia, because it was the first "no compromise" device for them. Previously you had the "business" phones that had WiFi, the "activity" phones that had a GPS and the "fun, kid-friendly" phones that had media-capabilities, but for the first time you had it all in one package and for a reasonable price. This was my first phone with a GPS. Google Maps was als still in it's infancy back then, so the Nokia Maps app with turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps were a huge thing! And you just barely mentioned Quickoffice, but it was a piece of software that made this phone a computer in a pocket back then, it was not obvious at the time that you can open and edit MS Office files. So I think it was a good phone fo the time. Despite that: I used it for about 2.5 years and it was my least favorite Nokia for some reason. As you said, it felt cobled-together, and sluggish, mainly because Nokia was notorious for only including the bare minimum amount of RAM needed to make the phone function. They did it all the time: a good hardware shot in the foot by not enough RAM. I think if Nokia simply put double the RAM in all their phones between 2005 and 2010 they'd have remained a key player because their phones would have felt more fluid and refined... Thanks for the review!

This was my first phone as a kid (i didn't even get to have a sim and just played games or listened to music on it). There was a pre loaded song that i loved but accidentally deleted. It went something like "we keep running around, we run out of town and i don't wanna go home". If someone can help me find that song it'll be a huge help. Also there was a pre loaded game here where we had a trail of colored balls that kept moving towards the end. And we had to shoot a ball from a canon to remove the balls off the trail by matching 3 of the same color. We could choose characters that had special powers- one character could like freeze the balls, one could summon earth/dust that destroyed some of them, one had fire. It was a fun game. If someone can find it, that'll be a huge help too.

But, after the update. The phone is kinda smooth and better. I also love the stereo speaker and sound quality of this device too. But yeah, the camera sucks though Overall. I enjoy using this phone. I like the black version. One of my friends owned a Chinese knockoff version of this phone (Instead of XpressMusic, it said MusicXpress 🤣), but I really wish HMD Global would look into bringing back with that XpressMusic line for diehard audio fans though, and similarly, Sony would throw back out some 'Walkman' phones too, ans Motorola would have the iTunes music app equipped on certain phones. I miss those days!!! Those of us who had those phones from the 00's, would kill or be killed for that nostalgic feeling once again! They should look into reigniting that feeling to get a huge grab back of their fans! If HMD Global uses their head, they can even come out with a line of Nokia XpressMusic Bluetooth headphones and/or earbuds!!! Thanks for the vid, and the nostalgia!

The 5800 was the second to the last Nokia ive owned (the Nokia C1-01 had that honor of last) and my first touch screen "smart phone". Used mine from 2009 to 2014... its last year relegated to media player duty. The interface, settings and look of the software is simple that i setup all the samsung phones anf tablets (add the Asus and Acer tablets) to look like the symbian s60 5 (still have the nokia wallpapers too). My 5800XM was a black with a silver stripe. Mine didnt have the Bounce game (must have deleted it in the unboxing).

Same with me, had an eye for iPhone but bought Nokia thinking its as good as an iPhone but from a known company. Moved over to Android 2 years later and stayed with it. This actually got me thinking that had this phone not launched I would have bought an iPhone sooner or later and would have never tasted Android. This phone basically helped Android built its userbase, keeping a great bunch of users on hold by offering touch experience for android to come in and offer a decent OS. What are your thoughts?
@DarkOracleOfDeath2 жыл бұрын
Back then, the Apple AppStore had just released. I still don't get why people complain about the lack of apps on Symbian/Windows when the original iPhone came with no app store or no way of side loading any apps, so you'd get only what Apple gave you and you could do nothing about it. I never had the 5800, but I had some slight variations: 5530 and 5230, both great. For me however, the best platform still is Windows Mobile which believe it or not still works well and it's still being used to this day on certain barcode scanners and other industrial machines. I had a HTC P3600 which was ages in front of Apple. It had 3G, the ability to install apps, change registry entries, homescreen (called Today screen). On the iPhone you can't even change your homescreen today. They'll probably "innovate" that in about 10 years. As if, we wouldn't have been able to do it on Android as well since forever.

Funnily enough I do not remember this one that fondly. It was just another symptom of Nokia's internal dysfunction at that time. Significant that it was the first touchscreen S60 phone so Symbian^1 but IMO it did a lot to damage the brand. As the iPhone had already been out for 17 months when this became available people who got this were disappointed with the UX and knew there was better touch and UI elsewhere. Sold like crazy, which was damaging! I imagine it was a considerable number of people's last Nokia phone. Mad to think it took them another two years to finally have a fully competitive product on the market with Symbian^3 devices. And even then they only really got good with Belle a year later. Shame what happened after that. Belle was better than all the Android devices I tried at the time. And Meego Harmattan was so far out ahead in UI and UX compared to any of its contemporaries. Not to mention all the incredible devices! 😥
