The camera has a carl zeiss lens and an unbelievable 41 megapixel sensor! In addition you can get a camera grip for you 1020, which makes it more comfortable to take pictures. You also get 50% more battery life with this grip and it even has a screw mount so you can use a tripod.
Since I mainly work as a cinematographer I have tested the video quality of the Nokia lumia 1020. I have made a shortfilm and compared the camera with three other cameras (Canon 550D/t2i, Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 808)
I have also tested some really nice built inn apps like the "Nokia Smart Cam" were you can change faces of the people you have taken picture of, make blurry effects, create actions shots and so on.
The 41 megapixel sensor gives you crystal sharp images. Since the images are so sharp, there are no problem zooming in and reframing the shot after you have taken it. I must say I'm really impressed with this phone, and I'm glad Nokia has used a lot of time to focus on the camera.
And it was about time it was released in Norway. Yey!

It's now 2024 and I still take my Lumia 1020 with me on holiday as there is something about the pictures that is like old film cameras from my youth, I love the fact that the camera did the "best shot" ages before Google worked it out last year :) Don't get me wrong I loved my Pixel 2XL and am having fun with the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 pro I have but my N1020 will always have a special part in my tech heart.

Thanks Gabriel. I appreciate your comment. Yes you are right. Currently it's not possible to change the focus manually while filming. For the shot you refer to, I used autofocus and was lucky, hehe :)

This is the type of professional presentation and demonstration of a camera phone that I want to see of the Lumia 950. But Microsoft didn't push that camera at all despite it being much better than even the 1020's camera. I have both and I love the 950 and I want to see what it's capable of in the hands of people who know how to properly work a camera to its fullest potential.

Thanks. No sharpness added to any of the videos. The clips in the short are just colorgraded and some are added warp stabilizer. The videos after the short are straight out of the cameras :)

I can wait for the next version. It looks amazing for a camera phone, but I want something that is 25-50 percent better with filming. Couple more hardware upgrades with very good software upgrades and this could be a viable choice for the person who wants to take good pictures just for fun. You may be able to do videos that would work for a start-up KZbin channel...after the upgrades.

I had the Icon (929 CDMA US only version) for 3 weeks. Great phone but just a tad too big and square. Then tested out this one and although the electronics are slightly more dated, returned the Icon and more happy with this. If you do any outdoor hiking or nature photography more than browse the Web or make calls this is in my opinion a better phone. Nice to have a camera with the added advantage to send messages, book travel, use as GPS, browse and make calls. Great travel device.
