Nokia Lumia 800 Review
Nokia is putting a lot on the line with the release of the Lumia 800. Running Windows Phone 7.5, the device is something Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop hopes will revive the company's reputation as one of the top phone manufacturers in the world. Now that it's here, is it a step in the right direction?
On the hardware front, we are huge fans of the Lumia 800 design. It's sophisticated, sleek and the materials feel fantastic. Nokia's legendary design sense definitely shines through to make one very attractive device. Internally, the Lumia 800 comes equipped with a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED ClearBlack display, 8-megapixel camera capable of 720p HD video recording, 1.4GHz single-core processor, 512MB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Unfortunately, there's is no front-facing cam, so that is something to keep in mind.
It's unfortunate that Windows Phone OS doesn't receive the attention it deserves. We're huge fans of Mango, especially the way it handles multitasking through what Microsoft calls Tombstoning (watch the video to see it in action). The OS designmakes for a very elegant, sophisticated user experience that is very snappy even despite the device's specs . Bough this in Oct 2012, unaware of the switch to Windows 8 which was happening at the time. Now we have been left with this crap 7.8, and cant get the new limited apps that are available. Secondly the keypad is awful, camera quality too and my phone cant even keep the time, always shifts 7min ahead. All my phones have been nokia and I have been trying to avoid the apple. Nokia is out the Window. May be nice to hold but I am very disappointed, don't waste your money.

1-Who cares? I don't even know anyone who actually uses those except when they first get a phone, just to try it 2-It's a text message, not a 200-page essay that you have to re-type 3-Zune is WAY better than itunes! I have no problems synching photots 4-Try running an update. I have a contact group with over 60 ppl... 5-Press the camera button then swipe left. Or, put the photos live tile on your homescreen. I think it's a 100x better than android which now feels clunky and homemade

Not exactly. And no, it is not at all a rage comment. I'm just saying that Windows is just as bad. Like Windows for computers, the mobile version is just the same...for people who just use it because they aren't aware of how many better OS's are out there and that Windows is probably the most amateurish one out of them all. Any tech-savvy person (or "Computer Geek" if you will) would agree with this statement. If they had just used their own brains and improve Symbian, it would've been better.

actually if you go for the finnish way it's pronounced "ˈnɔkiɑ" more like nok-ya,but even elop & steve balmer pronounce it totally differently. most north americans i've heard say "no-ki-a" but never heard it pronounced that way in australia, always nok-ya.

Live tiles are awesome, basic simplified style of WP is awesome at its best, sometimes too simple and boring. Metrostyle CAN be a very beautiful thing. I had my Lumia 800 for 6 months, i sold it because it just lacks so much features i need/want. WP8 won't come to Lumia 800, so that sealed my mind. Now i have Samsung, that is much better as a smartphone, and that has a dropping data connection. Maybe i should change back to 5230

My main point though is there is different phones that have windows, different phones that have android do you see where apple is falling behind in innovation? Why i everytime see comments like "It's an amazing phone but it has no FFC" or memory card slot. I've never seen anyone using FFC for real, and what comes for adding memory... for some this might be a real issue i believe but i think many are like i am: Get the phone full of mp3s and videos and so on, and 95% of them just lies there. Now i've finally realized how lame idea it is to have movies on phone. or series. mp3s are ok, but mp3stream rules.

For those who are deciding on phones, other people can't decide which one to get for you. You have to decide which one suits your need the best. WP7 is best for social and having everything organized into hubs with a fresh new design, iPhone is best for having a bunch of apps and great gaming (better than Android but not sure how it compares with WP7), Android is open source and you can do a whole bunch of things with it I can't even name them all.

I never really cared for WP7 devices, but it's all personal preference, and no I'm not hating but honestly, app support on WP7 is disappointing. I love Panodra, another app Iike is Line2 which allows for unlimited text/calls using VoIP and its only for ios and Android. Also not a fan of Bing or Internet Explorer. There are a few things about WP7 phones I would change. I am sorry if this sounds like a "Apple Fanboy" or "Android Fanboy" message, but it's not. Good attempt on Nokias side though

@Civsuccess2 @Civsuccess2 Since WP7 had a big update a few months ago the number of apps are rising. But the reason WP7 has so few apps is because less people own WP7 phones. If more people buy the phones more and more people will create user created apps, and other companies (such as Mozilla for example) will make apps.

@RaheelShah31 The only reason Android and iOS is doing better than WP7 is because people don't give WP7 a chance. They see the pretty commercials for iPhone and Android and they are lured to it like fish on a hook. If people gave WP7 a chance they would see how good it is, and hopefully with Nokia joining forces with Microsoft people will finally realize that.

Phone and OS are both simply amazing. I switched from Android (God thank you) to Windows, just simply amazing. This phone looks awesome, works awesome without a single delay, simply experienced I never felt with android (unless it's a phone that's more expensive then the space shuttle)....

Changing the profile from ring to vibrate is as easy as hitting the volume rocker once (either up or down, doesn't matter) in any screen you're in, including the lockscreen, and hitting the alarm 'bell' on the top right. Vibrate-mode is then showed constantly with an icon on the top bar.

2 Killer Features this phone is missing. A Memory Card slot and a front facing camera ... in fact just add a memory card slot and it would be worth getting. Windows Phone the only mobile OS worth looking in to other than iOS.

While I cannot speak for that directly, I would STRONGLY urge you, if you are in the market for a phone, to not get ANY Windows Phone 7 devices... only look at WP8 devices. WP7 is no longer supported and those phones no longer receive any updates. You would be better off getting an inexpensive Lumia 520, which does run Windows Phone 8.

I got in it December 2012, to date is has been working fabulously but it did screw up in 3 occasions ... (January) it auto off by itself, won't turn on unless I plug it into the charger. (March) Nokia screen just hand during start up, had to wait till the battery is drained for it to restart. (April) Serious screw up after an update, had to look for a Nokia Center in Malaysia, Located in One Utama, but it was moved to Amcorp Building in PJ ... So I decided to do a hard reset myself.

I thought I would Like this phone for having a good camera I hated it because my old phone Sony Erickson of 2007 model can play any song I put to into it as a ringtone and Lumia cant even play anything that is bigger than 1MB and 30sec. Oh and definetly must be something found on store cause I cant use PC or bluetooth to pass any ringtones. Back to my Sony Erickson cause I dont have money for Iphone then :(

What? Did I hear that right? You have no problem getting through a full day. A full day? Seriously? I have never owned a touchscreen phone and now I'm considering this one, but if it only lasts a day or two with full charge, it's complete rubbish. My 5 year old phone gets by 1 week to 1 and a half weeks, easily, without charging. Are all touchscreen phones like that or are there proper phones out there?

I was so excited to buy this phone but after a while I can tell what is the disadvantages I have spotted so far. 1- No Front Camera. 2- No text messages draft folder so if you get distracted when typing - its over you lost it. 3- I Tunes - I find it very difficult to use and extreamly difficult to transfer photos to PC and has no Cut Past option. No impressed. 4- You cant add more than 20 contacts to any contacts group- oldest nokia could do this. 5- cant open photos without going to apps.

if you want a different experience, get the lumia 800/900. i was having the same problem as you. but i chose the lumia 800 and have been a user for two months now and i'm loving my phone more and more everyday. it's tough and battery life is wonderful (lasts throughout the day). i would suggest the lumia 900 as with front facing camera, you can have more fun with the phone. apps are getting better and better on the windows marketplace. again, depends on your preference. hope this helps!

only supports a few video formats battery life lasts only a day with wifi on (without even surfing etc) camera quality downgraded to 8mp with a fake xenon flash (the n8 was way better!) most downloadable apps are useless doesnt come with apps like sound recorder, note and stuff like that bluetooth can only be used when and ONLY when transferring contacts from another phone! SOO STUPID! zune software = huge pile of crap unable to make a backup speaker is a bit weak (n97 mini was better)

ok so here are some reasons why nokia fans shouldnt buy this phone no front facing camera (i know that the 900 has one but hey it should have already been featured in this one) unable to use a mmc which i think it soo ridiculous because of all these years that they have been doing it they drop the idea on this one, you are unable to delete some photo albums maps does not turn to where you are facing cannot use personalised ringtones unless its 40sec short continued>>

@HumzaAhmed155 Ok, but don't forget, this phone is only single core. Android needs at least a dual core to perform well, and even then, there could be some lag. Overclocking ICS on this phone would result in having your battery gone in an hour :P Don't get me wrong, i'm note hating on Android (i love it's openness and ICS's sleek look) but having it on this phone would suck. Nokia makes amazing phones but their choice of software has always been poor, its obvious that if nokia chooses to make android phones, it will sell a lot more phones, heck i would start buying from noka again if they got android, sadly it chose wp7. It was a bad choice because of the lack of apps on the wp7, if windows did have as many apps as android or ios, it would have a lot more sales. Apart from the number of apps, wp7 is not a bad os at all.

@T0JVI Yea you have options to use grey, blue, orange, red, lime, brown, magenta and a couple others I think. If you're comparing android vs windows phone then you need to do your research because it matters on what you need the phone for. Generally I recommend android to those who are tech savvy but it really depends on personal preference. I'm tech savvy and I currently use this phone (Lumia 800) as of today as my 'daily driver.'

@blankets1453 as mrmurder96 said you can't use apps from google itself, but you won't have any trouble using google services on the windows phone (i got one). gmail is integrated perfectly, as well as google calendar. there are awesome apps for google reader (nextgen reader), youtube (lazytube), google maps, etc. and all of them are free. it's not android, but it's good as anything not-google can get using google products. and you always have microsoft services. office and skydrive are awesome

@bluestarkad17 Well maybe I should explain myself better. Part of the reason is for future proofing. I am one of those guys who love to have emulators/roms on my phones. I'm talking about like SNES, GBA, and Sega emulators. For some reason the current WP7 phones are having a hard time keeping up with the emulators. Like they are only running at 80% if you check here on KZbin you will see what I am talking about. Its things like this that are making me look at newer models.

@Illmatic662 "much quicker" is a big overstatement...1-3 seconds quicker isnt a good enough reason for me to upgrade...wp7 phones are quick and smooth anyway because thats how the OS was designed to be...the first gen wp7 phones are plenty quick especially with the mango update...3 seconds quicker is really pushing it but i decided to say it anyway when it probably is nowhere near that much faster

i think the two disadvantages he calls, (the flip thing to power up the phone at 4:40 and the menu you have to pull down to see the battery life at 11:48 ) are actually really nice. if i had to design the phone (i just happen to be a product designer myself) i would have also hidden that power-up input and the battery life menu. it makes it just that little more ''smooth and nice designed'' : )

@javogreen07 @javogreen07 that isn´t accurate, acording to Gartner, it is from the sales in the Q3, when WM6 its discontinued, there are pure WP7 sales. android sold 60M, and WP7 sold 1.7M, the same 2010 Q3 WP and WM, sold 2.2M, its sad but that junk OS is the worst choose for a serious company like Nokia, and if it no got success nokia not will be like it was in the 90`s, and Elop will be the last culprit of this...

Microsoft isn't going to stop being the most used operating system just because you don't like it. It is the OS with the most software available so I don't really get your point. What is your better alternative? Does it have more software available than Windows? Is it more practical? What exactly is its advantage over Windows?

yes but no more software updates for the lumia 610, lumia 800 and lumia 900 DONT have any new updates , but you can try ,depending on where you get it it will have win P 7.5 or 7.8, So you can just update it and after that enjoys win P 7.8 cos there are no more updates, but there are other good windows phones around. For ages I've said I want an iPhone 5, it's the best nothing can beat Apple, but now I just really want a Lumia, they just look so sleek and quality made without extreme prices. I have an iPod touch 4g, and at my local music shop there's a deal going where you can hand in your old iPod and get a new iPod touch 5g. So that's what I'll do, I'll get a Lumia and an iPod, perfect!

I'm currently using iPhone and I love it, might go to the 5 but when I saw the Galaxy S3 I was impressed and with this phone as well. I used to be with Nokia and they have great service with their phones. The Nokia does stand out. I need a new phone soon anyway so I'm going to most definitely check this one out.

I think the thing I'm looking foward to the most about adopting this OS in the near future is no more of those horrible notification badges that used to drive me insane. Like the mail icon there, the 61 doesn't bug me but if it was a 61 badge on iOS mail I would be slowly going insane till I cleared it all.

Multi-core support, MicroSD slot support, a better OS core (which might mean integration with Windows 8 OS), OTA Updates, Native screenshot capability, NFC, Better multitasking (as advertised by Microsoft, not sure about it though), Wallet capability, Secure Boot,WiFi tethering, and perhaps a lot more, developer-wise.

Hmm. Did you upgrade your software? Because when i use mp3..for like about 3 to 5 hours (while studying), my battery goes to about 30% at the end of the day(about 11pm). I surf the net too while using mp3 and i text. i do apply some battery aging techniques like synchronising email every hour instead of immediately.
