I had a 2140 that I had persuaded Orange to unlock for me when I moved to an area that had bad coverage. I ended up putting the One2One sim card inside it after taking it to carphone warehouse for cutting down, this was before the 2146 came out and also before the PH337 the first One2One phone to accept 2FF mini sims, caller ID and text messages (though the m400 and flare had partial support for the latter two). I remember a certain shop telling me that I was not telling the truth about caller ID and SMS working until I got them test it right in front of them, One2One hadn't even informed the store that it was being rolled out. It was pretty cool using those features months ahead of others, due to the delay in One2One releasing the 21 series Nokia and other 2nd gen DCS phones.

Good video. Nice to see some Nokias. Never really seen the point in having heaps of ringtones, beyond just the novelty factor.

+nickhill92 Hi Nick. Yeah I dug these out....had a whole crate of these in storage! Loads of duplicates too. I might start selling some of the duplicate phones off too..... With regards to ringtones generally....the ones on these phones were OK at the time. Then in 1997 everyone started sending ringtones via text message and people all different ringtones. I can certainly remember being out in Jerusalem in 1997 and everyone had either an alpha, a micro digital or an Elite and when someone's phone range everyone looked at their phone thinking it was theirs that was ringing. I was a minority with my nokia....and that was also not GSM at the time.

Thanks another video! Update, I commented a few weeks ago about here in the USA AT&T shutting down there old 2G network, I'm really not sure if its just GPRS or also EDGE as well have not really looked into it, But still going as planned as people who are using a prepaid provider that run on AT&T's network have started getting letters and or free replacement 3G devices. I hope T-Mobile here will keep it at least though. On my 2nd line I have a number from an 80s song (867-5309) which collects calls , texts,etc its on a modern Android phone LG G2, I was able to force it to GSM only (GPRS)! data is not needed so I think I'll let it stay on the old gprs network as long as its there.
@EudesRJ8 жыл бұрын
+Hunter Yelton Why force to use 2G only? If you don't need data, just disable data use (-; 2G networks have been shutdown, 3G will remain for a time. 3G will give you extra coverage for now and when 2G is disable will be your only option. I'm using 4G where I have it, because 3G is a little overloaded in Brazil but 4G still good
@HPad28 жыл бұрын
+Luiz Claudio Eudes Corrêa cause why not? Like I said the phone is used to just collect calls and texts it's not my main use phone. My main phone 6S it stays on LTE majority of the time. I'm just keeping that 2nd line on GPRS as they will come a time that won't be available. 3G in my area is not so bad I can easily pull around 12mbps if signal is good. But at my home it sucks haha. But LTE works perfectly at home.
@BrickCellphones8 жыл бұрын
+Hunter Yelton Ah man....that sucks! if they are shutting down 2G then chances are GPRS/EDGE will also go as the two technologies kind of go together. they are in effect forcing everyone to upgrade to a more sophisticated phone even though some people may not want to. I certainly will still be using my GSM1900 motorola 6000e as long as I can!
@BrickCellphones8 жыл бұрын
+Luiz Claudio Eudes Corrêa well the first GSM networks were 1G/2G and they were built to cover the widest service area. then came 3G to add extra capacity and more services like data etc. I only use 4G if I have to. I much prefer 2G. it's also a much lower frequency if its GSM900 which is more likely to be less damaging than 2.6Ghz LTE 4G.

Also some new news, I got a Freedompop Sim here in the USA, which is supposed to work with no roaming in other countries. It turns out the actual sim is a Three UK sim! With a Three APN! Data and everything things Im in the UK! It roams on both AT&T and T-Mobile here in the states with a USA Number. A little strange that mainly the sim is a Three UK sim.

Also not sure if you have the time or would like to, but if you ever can make videos of network error messages on various networks you may have sims that get service. I've always been interested in error messages (like dialing incorrect number) things of that sort. Never really heard them outside of USA. Thanks.

+Hunter Yelton I'm using my T-mobile SIMcard in Brazil, if I'm connect to VIVO network just works, but if I'm on TIM network and anyone call me will listening a message in Portuguese (Brazilians don't speak Spanish) saying that this number don't exist :p
@BrickCellphones8 жыл бұрын
+Hunter Yelton I have way too many SIMs to be getting into that!!!! if you want to hear caller verify your number messages from outside the USA then thats easy.....just dial a country code followed by a random number. Chances are you'll get a message.

That was my first ever phone on orange and I remember the warranty being fantastic. They once replace one within an hour. One thing those antennas were very weak and they were send you an antenna and a spare with a little tool to switch them out.. so I guess there’s no way to get an EE Sim or any other Sim if the phone was unlocked by EE to work is that right in 2024? I just got hold of one of these on eBay in the box.

16:15 - That used to happen to me on my Alcatel 311 from 2002. The main cause for that were the dirty contacts in the SIM slot, I cleaned them up a bit and the problem was gone :)

Vintage Cellular Mobile Phones I'm glad I could be of some help to you. I'm a collector of old phones too, but sadly my collection consists of only 8 phones. And as a collector of old phones I discovered that if you don't insert a SIM card for a very long time (10 years and more) the contacts in the SIM slot get covered by a very thin (often invisible) layer of copper patina (copper rust). The layer may be invisible, but it often causes the SIM cards to be read incorrectly. The best remedy for this is to scratch the SIM contacts with a sharp needle or with a tip of a knife (Gently and carefully of course, without applying too much pressure on the contact pins). If the SIM contacts are burred inside and you can't accesses them, try inserting and taking out a SIM card 6-7 times. The SIM card that you insert and take out for several times must be absolutely clean of fingerprints, because you wouldn't want any additional grease on the SIM contacts. If none of this helps, that means that the SIM slot is busted, or the phone has some other problems, but that is very rare and so far it hasn't happened to me personally. I must say: I really enjoy watching your videos, and I like your channel very much. I learned a lot about the 1G (analog) phones from you. That's how I discovered your channel, by searching "analog mobile phones" in Google :) Too bad we live so far apart from each other, I would've really liked to see some of these phones in real-life. It will be like a visit to a mobile tech museum :)
@BrickCellphones8 жыл бұрын
Well I know that contacts eventually corrode. its' the same with battery contacts and I'm always scrapping away green verdigris. But I didn't think it happened with the SIM contacts. I will have to see what difference that makes. Thanks for your support and interest. It's always nice to hear that I've helped or inspired someone....even if you only have 8 phones. I started my collection with just 3 phones many many years ago. and I was not ashamed to ask for old phones people were throwing out....I even looked in the rubbish of the cellphone shops to see if there was anything clean worth taking. Even if you were in london....it would be difficult to see them in real life because my phones are stored in several different storage units....in case there is a fire in one location the other locations are fine. It's also better for security. I don't keep many phones in my house. Only maybe about 30 for the back ground....the rest all go back to secure storage....I don't know what country you are in but I'm sure there is museum with old phones.
