Great comparison! I have used the ZV-1 for 2 years and I am still on the look out for a smartphone to beat it in terms of video quality. Have used a couple of smartphones but the videos always come out unnatural in comparison. Tip! The ZV-1 is only 8-bit which doesn't work well at all with S-Log. HLG works better and will give you enough room to tweak the image to your liking. I use a custom HLG3 for best dynamic range as I almost always shoot outdoors.

I have sony A7SIII and iPhone 13 Pro, for sosial media content i always use my iPhone to shoot video. A7SIII is great and you have tons of flexibility, but you need to put lots of work in editing in order to get nice picture. In the other hand, iPhone is already got nice color straight out of camera and need very little tweaking in post pro. That being said for now 98% i always use my iPhone for content creation because it is small, easy to use, great dynamic range and color. Where the A7SIII only use when i got professional job. But seriously, all camera manufacturer need to get into AI sotfware just like iPhone, the problem with today's mirrorless is you need to spend times in editing in order to get great color. That's fine if you're doing professional job but when comes to content creation that's the thing i would 100% avoid. We need quick turn out when comes to content creation, we don't have times to sit in front of PC for hours just to get great looking images.

You may find the DJI Pocket 2 as a better alternative for videos, especially considering its more natural colours and less sharpening compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. Also, the active gimball stabilization of DJI Pocket 2 blows away every other budget camera or phone. It also has very good performance in low light conditions. You can even run at the night with it and it will still keep focus on the objects when you shoot 4K videos and will not produce jarring blurry mess like every smartphone do. By the way, there are rumours that its successor DJI Pocket 3 will hit the market on November 2022.

One thing I found when shooting raw on the iPhone is that in Photoshop (not sure about lightroom I always use PS) the raw files come with the sharpening and denoising sliders already up (under the "detail" tab), so if you don't like the over the top sharpening you can reduce the sliders to 0 and that fixes most if not all of my issues.

At 4:58 is an excellent comparison between a traditional camera and a smartphone with computational imaging in low light situation. ZV1 with an inch sensor bumps up the ISO but the sensor produces very little noise that it resembles more like a film grain than a digital noise which adds 'texture' to the photograph. It is rich with details and I bet that the scene brightness is very close to what our eyes actually see. The brightened Iphone version looks smudged despite using computational techniques that the texture of the collar and hat looks like an oil painting.

On the other hand my iPhone 13 Pro Max, can do everything I need, at any time. connect a small mic, and audio is great. The picture quality is fantastic and can be corrected a little in post. The downside is that you lose the F1.8 in ZV1 and Mark 7's price is about the same as 13 Pro. In that case, you can get the RX100 Mark 6 for lower price. Check the review first though. ZV1 is the same form factor as the RX100 series. It's cheaper because it has lower quality materials. I think the ZV1 is equal to the Mark 5. But for photographers shooting casually that edit photos, the ZV-1 makes a good case even in 2023 at $700 new. It should outlast the typical iPhone lifespan for *most* users (yes, the flagship iPhone has 6 years of updates - most of you will trade it in before then and a good amount of people don't have the flagship). Of course, find a well-kept ZV-1 for $400-450 to save on the "drive it off a dealer's lot " depreciation. And save your phone's battery.

The winning factor for most people will be what fits in their pocket and is it sharp enough, it's how things seem to be going. Apple's image processing used to be natural and tasteful, but they just screwed it with computational photography. The sharpening even reminds of early DV camcorders' look. To make things worse, there is no way we can completely get rid of those AI stuffs now. While taking photos, we cannot turn SmartHDR off in the new iPhone 13 lineup even shooting in RAW. As for video, Apple also did not provide APIs for developers to turn off edge sharpening and noise reduction in their apps like Filmic Pro. How shame. I have just updated to Photoshop 2022. In Camera Raw now we finally have Apple ProRaw profile. How do you recommend to open these RAW files of iPhone 13 Pro inside Photoshop Camera Raw 14.0? By default it is set to Adobe RGB, 8 bit, 300ppi. Do you leave these preferences by default or have you changed them?

I had a similar experience when I took the Sony ZV-1 for a walk with my old iPhone 13 Mini (the lens inherited from the iPhone 12 Pro) I must say Apple is getting so much better with the software manipulation that the dedicated cameras under $1000 can no longer compete. iPhone is more portable too. I also use GoPro 10 and the video stabilization is simply incomparable to both the iPhone and ZV-1, so, I think I will return my test Sony camera, I cannot justify the $900 and cannot find use for it.

Wow! I was working servicing cameras when Sony with Canon released the first digital camera recording on a stamp size floppy. Half a megapixel was the start, stills with a dynamic level so low that hardly anybody would believe how the technology can advance. The Iphone 13 is the temporary king of video phone but every day is another day.

I just wanted to get an iPhone 13 Pro max, would be so handy, BUT those light leaks at night are putting me off... Are they there every lens, including filming in ProRes? After watching most of your iP13 vids, this was the one that makes me think otherwise, had a ZV-1 great camera when used on Zhiyun M2 gimbal with internal steady turned off, you could actually zoom from the gimbal. Great channel and content, I'm a fan...

I’m deciding between spending my money on IPhone or ZV 1, I’d like to shoot KZbin videos for my small business behind the scenes and Tik Tok, and take product shots of my jewelry so they are tiny items. Which one do you suggest to get? I like the quality on ZV1 but I like the colours on IPhone so it’s hard to choose >

The background blur from IP13 looks artificial. If you look closely, the edges of the subject are truncated. You lose a bit of the hair and occassionally even the ear. It is fine for social media but if you plan to use it for your family, think again.

As everybody needs a phone. Just go with a premioum smartphone. I compared the Canon G7 Mark III with my Samsung S21 and the phone is much better regarding noise, HDR and processing. When I'm out with both cameras I always end up using the smartphone as it is more convenient and has good autofocus/face recognition for street photography. Also the larger display is great to compose photos.

Thanks for this unbiased review. I'm really trying to understand the truth with camera (eg. A7iv) vs smartphones, that if in today's date it is worth buying a camera for serious photography and serious videography. At a lot of channels i have heard the opposite, that the smartphones are beating cameras. You seem to be saying the opposite. Please clarify and guide.

Overall iPhone 13 Pro is a better option. Ready to use and achieve some nice results. Like the ultrawide camera on iPhone is super fun. The improvements you get with the ZV-1 are totally lost once you update it to social media (which most people getting these two cameras do) and people see it on their phones. But, if you're willing to spend more time in post, ZV-1 can give you some really great results, like post stabilization with Catalyst Browse (something not demonstrated in this video), more room to play with editing and so on... I hope Sony releases a ZV-2 with a wider focal length and improved stabilization, that'd make ZV-2 untouchable for this segment!! Great video as always. Keep them coming!

For pictures I think the ZV1 is just a biz better But for video I dont know but cause of the stabilization and the higher dynamic range I would prefer the Iphone Also If I dont want to play with the photos I just want to take it and upload it to Insta or something like that I think the Iphone is just better even if the photos are not that great like the ZV1 photos What I miss from the Iphone is the slow motion But again if we think about low light video then again the ZV1 is just better So this is the situation when u want both 😅✌️ But if u can get only one of them then the Iphone is the better option
