This is part of what is missing in a lot of today’s music- the ENERGY that is the result of a bunch of musicians who are in command of their instruments who start jamming together in one room. So much of the mid sixties music is folks having fun playing and singing together and that’s what makes it special. It’s almost impossible to hear this music and not be energized and happy. In my humble opinion.

GOAT-level soul classic. You know why it hits you so hard in such a way? Because it has humanity. No click, no auto-tune, no Pro Tools, no drum machines, no sequences, just human beings grooving together and making handmade music in real time, in meatspace. You ought to check out a couple of rock-solid instrumental soul classics: "The Flick" by Earl Van Dyke and the Funk Brothers (Motown's infamous house band, also heard here), and "Soul Finger" by the Bar-Kays.

Besides Motown, the early 60’s was the period where James Brown with the Famous Flames and later the JB’s were really dominating and molding what would become known as “Funk”. Naturally there were scattered hits by bands that were experimenting with similar sounds and getting scattered hits. I believe Junior Walker would fall into that bunch. But if you really want the epic beginnings of the funk with it seems like endless hits….James Brown and his bands are undeniably it. But just be prepared to get dumbfounded at how many samples you will hear that have been used in songs you probably thought were original. James Brown is the most sampled artist in music history….and for good reason.
