I was raised learning to cook, clean, be obedient, never talk back, to be skinny bc I wouldn’t be able to find a husband and understand that boys will be boys, never allowed to go out, not allowed to wear certain things, etc. Now that I’m older, I hate doing anything a man in my family asks of me. Oh my God, I have that same reaction to being told to do things by the men in my life. It seems like I had a very similar childhood to yours. It’s not simply that being told to do things by men upsets me, it’s being told to do things by a person not willing to share the burden of the labor AND who doesn’t treat us with kindness or respect. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to be treated that way.

After my case, they started putting the children into "reunification camps" to forced to go live with their fathers. It wouldn't be so bad if the yfather wasn't making them perform "favors" for them. The camp couldn't be any worse if they were giving him lessons on how to be better at it. Thank God there are young people on TikTok, calling them out after they grow up and age of it.

I nearly married a guy who promised me we'd be equal partners and split the work evenly. He asked if we could bake an apple pie "together" and then pretended he couldn't figure out how to peel an apple. Sat there and watched me do all the work. Man makes 200K plus a year and he can't figure out how to peel an apple?? But I was supposed to quit my job and be a sahm for him. The lines about weaponized incompetence as a form of dominance and control are real. I would have been all the things this song rages about.

@@Belly_Beane I’ve noticed that also, and it’s so crazy to me how they can hear this song and have that perspective. Didn’t they have mothers? Sisters? I know (at least in my family) SA/grape/harassment is a conversation we had openly with each other but got hushed when a man would walk in the room. But to some extent these people have to see what’s going on- it’s so visible and blatantly obvious. I just don’t understand.

@ I was just thinking that as I watched this video as well. I understand her intention I think, like she’s drawing correlation to older times and how nothing has changed- but a lot of people are taking it at face value. Or rather, a lot of men are, because all the women and afab people have experiences with it and understand her intent better. I’d be interested to see more people react to “Labor: the Cacophony” video because it doesn’t have the olden times set and is mostly videos of people today. But since they’re basically the same song people avoid it since they’ve already reacted to this one. I think there’d likely be more understanding with that video.

This is much more than just the idealisation of the start of a relationship. This song is about society, patriarchy and misogyny, how men are put by men themselves on pedestal like "men are providers, they are the head of the family, they are more intelligent and better in every aspect and woman are lesser beings" yet we are expected to do triple the work men do plus a lot of stereotypes to follow and if we don't fit into them we are not valuable, we are worth nothing...

I really think you are the only guy doing a reaction video who seems to actually get this song and its harsh realities. Please do crank this song driving. Anyone who appreciates it for what it actually means deserves to do that. By the way, men should not just thank the women in their lives for what they do for them, they should equally share the burden of that labor. That would make a world of difference to us.

"for somebody I thought was my saviour" this also speaks to the fact that the patriarchy FORCED women to rely on men throughout history, for as long as we know. Not too long ago, women weren't allowed to vote, drive, get a job, speak for themselves or taken seriously. And these are all still exist in certain parts of the world, especially that last part. 200 years ago, if you were an unmarried woman, the townspeople would see that as enough "reason" (or find other trivial "reasons") to burn you at the stake. I really appreciate this reaction ❤ As an AFAB non-binary person, seeing a cis man get so excited about what females have to say, brought me so much joy. I actually teared up. Your reaction to this song makes me so happy. I can see the respect you have for this song and for women in general. All of us, all of us women are in the same boat of having at least one horrible experience with a male, and seeing your reaction and respect makes us deeply happy. We are a community of different and shared experiences, all women support each other, as they should. Seeing that there are beautiful men like you out there is our hope. You also have an amazing vibe anyway, I could just tell that you’re a great person with a wonderful soul just from the first 5 seconds of the video. 💞 During my childhood, my father used to push on the stereotypes such as: speak when spoken to, no talking back, learn how to cook, clean, laundry work, etc. Things have changed since then, but the fact that he moved on so fast and hasn’t brought it up or given me, my sister and my mother an apology. But when this song was released a few years ago, I could feel that inner rage and anger that I had to stuff down in the depths of my soul. The ending chorus, both of them, I could feel it dig into my bones. I’ve been listening to this song over and over since then. You’re a great person though. Thank you for being so kind.💞

This song hit so deep. Every partner I've had, has been unwilling to learn and do an equal part of chores, not to mention the emotional labour. It's tiring to raise grown arse men, even when they are willing. But it's not just partners, it's all the men we encounter who devalue us, don't believe us, call us opinionated, make us feel unsafe, cause us to always look over our sholders, always have this fear inside us that is not anxiety, but based on experience, that men may harm us. I showed the mv to my 25yo nurse and she loves it and thanked me for sharing. And I live in Norway, one of the most egalitarian countries in the world.

Honestly the thing about her seeing him as a saviour, especially in the theme of the video as well is that even nowadays but especially in the past women's freedom and life was intrinsically dependant on men, their fathers brothers and husbands, society in general, they had no freedom all you could do was pray to be married off to a good man, for them to be your saviour but it's too late either way and hopeless, even in modern times women are still outweighed and drowned out by males

I would like to say that the "for someone who was my savior", i also think that this line does have a double meaning (much like any of the lines in this song). Yes you could see it as men being a knight in shining armor, as many women have called their partner, but also theres the way of looking at it from a traditional sense too. Men are seen as protectors or " saviors" in traditional roles, breadwinners, the big manly men that are there in the threat of danger. You can talk to any man that has that mindset of hes the alpha man who doesnt put of with no sht, hes a protector hes a savior, which is why women should serve him and be obedient in the relationship. That line to me doesnt just set someone on a pedestal (which i agree is a toxic mindset to have because you shouldnt put someone on that pedestal regardless), its also a sarcastic line in my opinion. And this comes from someone who has a "saviour", my husband pulled me from a bad situatuon (granted it wasnt a bad relationship in the sense of a boyfriend hitting me, but still), however he has never made me feel below him. He has always showed me that we are equals, and he shows that in his words but also his actions. We protect eachother, we share responsiblities in house work and child reering, and we both contibute to the relationship. And thats the difference. Again this is just my opinion though and maybe i am reading to much into the line but who knows.

I have seen so many men react to this song and throughout all of them I have noticed the same theme, they listen to hear but not to understand. Many of the men have made reference to the medieval style within the video and stating 'yeah this is what it was like back in the day' but completely missing the fact this is still very much a prominent expectation for women today. These songs shouldn't be fun, they are telling you in plain terms what the experiences and hardships of women are. We are very much expected to do and be everything for the men in our lives whether that be partners or family members just because it makes his life easier and he can then achieve whatever it is he wants to achieve. Men expect things to be done for them at the time they want it done and we get backlash if that expectation and standard isn't met because it means they will then have to do it themselves. More often than not the task is something they themselves can and should do. I have lived through this, so has my mother and grandmother and all the other women in my family. Even though I now live alone I am still expected to fit these roles whenever I visit my family. Men can't seem to understand that even subconsciously they demand women to serve them and bend over backwards for them. The messages in these songs are not for your entertainment, they are to get you to listen and to take seriously because they are very real and damaging. It is not the job of women to change the cycle. Men need to start listening and understanding that they are at the root of it in order for something to really change. They don't want to hear it because it benefits them to have people serve them and make life easier for them which is why it wont stop until men wake up.

Since you enjoyed this one a lot, I think you would also enjoy (both by Paris Paloma) as good a reason and last woman on earth. Or, Wings or Cry Evil by Iluka, because she somehow has even more anger than Paris Paloma does. I loved seeing how you understood why we consider it an anthem, especially because all of the guys in my life don't understand at all (they don't like the MeToo movement, nor do they like the Bear Vs Man argument)

This song has so many layers, I've been reading through the comments and love how people are mentioning their stories for why this song is classified as an "anthem". So, i'm going to break down this song as a writer myself to help bring some clarification as to WHY and HOW this song is an anthem and so powerful. I won't go through some of the stuff already pointed out in the comments but some of the more commonly missed things! The first two lines: Why are you hanging on so tight To the rope that I'm hanging from? These lines showcase her confusion to why he is holding onto her rope when he obviously does not care enough to actually hold on. She is dangling there reliant on him holding her up but he doesn't show WHY he is even holding on. Two lines at different times: And walk back down again to feel your words and their sharp sting Apologies from my tongue, and never yours These I believe work together, she has to apologize whenever she says something negative meanwhile he can say whatever he likes without consequences. He berates her work (referring to the line before the first one) but expects either praise or no negative feed back to his. Shows that she "isn't doing her job" even when she is working her butt off and bending over backwards to support his lifestyle. I know you're a smart man (I know you're a smart man), and weaponise The false incompetence, it's dominance under a guise These lines show that she did KNOWS he knows what he is doing to their relationship, enough to repeat part of it. She also recognizes signs of narcissism as he uses his incompetence to dominate her. Refers to gaslighting. If we had a daughter, I'd watch and could not save her She shows fear that her daughter will end up in a similar situation but be unable to get out as she would have learned from the father that it is "normal". This is seen a lot in these kind of homes and lifes where the kids are stuck and unable to break out of what they know as normal and so they pick up the same habits and such. So that he never lifts a finger This refers not physically beating her, helping her around the home, and can even go to pleasuring in the bedroom. You can get the idea. The common reference is that, due to the lines before it to gives a lot more reference, she has to do all these things so that he won't physically hurt her. That's the majority of it. Hopefully this can help break the song down more. I tried to get into details without going off on tangents but feel free to ask for more detailed info into my thoughts if you'd like more!

Thank you for sharing friend. I've actually listened to this song QUITE a bit since this reaction. Through listening to it and reading the comments provided by so many I've learned SO much more and would have SO much more to say this time around. I do like that you have basically touched on everything I did not mention in my video. This was a song where I do think that maybe I should react to the "alternative" version because I DO have that further perspective. IDK you let me know what you think I should do 🙏💜🧸

@@JohnnyFoxtrotshow I definitely think it would be worth it to dive into the alternative! The history of these kinds of songs are also fascinating on their own. Well, I feel a little less weird for listening to this song as a guy now. It's not only a banger, but it's a very important song. This does make me think, "Have I done this? Do I do these things?" and I don't think so, at least not as a pattern, but I still think it's important to take those moments to evaluate your own behavior as a man. I've been single for over a year because our priorities were very different, and I feel very weird listening to these types of song. My favorite band is Soda Blonde, and a lot of their lyrics have feminist topics because the singer writes most of the songs, and I am grateful for those songs because it makes me question my own behavior, but I also feel like I'm not the target audience and feel like an impostor. Feels very weird talking about these topics as a guy, I'm a little afraid of coming off as wanting brownie points

Thankfully I'm in a wonderful, supportive marriage but was raised by an alcoholic abusive father who treated my mother terribly. He's tried to improve over the years but he still has a long way to go. He thinks women are dramatic, useful idiots so this hit me hard. Especially the part about not being able to save a daughter. My mom fought for me and it still damaged me. But my daughter won't suffer this. Not from her dad anyway. 🩷

My mom went through this as well, though my grandfather never drank. Even to this day, he is extremely old school and him and my grandma both believe in the 'traditional' marriage. I've been called 'useless, worthless woman' by him many times when I refused to do things he told me to do. He also didn't allow my mom to do anything until she was an adult, like go out, have a boyfriend, etc. while he let his other two sons do everything. My mom did the exact opposite with me and my brother, which ig is a good thing. He pretty much drove the entire family apart, and my uncle, who went no contact with him 20 years ago, said that the first family reunion we're gonna have is at his funeral. He doesn't associate with the rest of the family, tho he still talks to us. It mustn't have been easy for your, but your kids are gonna appreciate it.❤️

@JohnnyFoxtrotshow25 күн бұрын
@@orfamayQ how so?
@orfamayQ24 күн бұрын
@@JohnnyFoxtrotshow In the first part, when you refer to "I thought was my savior" as "knight in shining armor" and how women expect too much from men. I think that is too much towards blaming the victim in this situation. This is just one word in a very loaded and powerful song, possibly in there mostly because it rhymes to "labour". This is really not what the song is about. Also the expectation that a woman needs a "savior" is also a toxic part of the patriarchy, that is not the women's fault, it is taught to them in Disney movies and Hollywood films, it is part of the oppression that the song is decrying. It feels iffy to shift the focus to how women are making a mistake and then find themselves in indentured servitude, like they should have known better.
@JohnnyFoxtrotshow24 күн бұрын
@orfamayQ can I ask if you watched the whole video? I tried to explain exactly what you said with that not being a good and or healthy thing to do referring to the savior comment. I promise you I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand better because my intention was to be an ally so I appreciate the feedback
@orfamayQ24 күн бұрын
@@JohnnyFoxtrotshow Thank you for being so kind! The thing that annoyed me was that it sort of sounded like the woman was at fault for expecting a savior, which of course is a bad thing that would not work out in real life. But focusing on that distracts from the root of that problem, that this myth is sold to little girls constantly and many don't really have a chance to know any better. It is more problematic that these narratives are dominant in our society to begin with. The cause for that is patriarchy. I'm sure we agree on that, it is probably just a matter of how to word it so that the focus is shifted back to the source. I normally wouldn't protest the notion that women and people in general shouldn't try so see their s.o. as "savior", it's just in the context of this powerful song that is about all the things that are expected from women and are burdened on women that I don't want to hear about something that kind of feel like yet another thing that women should or shouldn't do. I have watched a couple of reactions to the same song and most were men, it's really interesting that not one seemed to "get" it in the same way that women seem to "get it". The one young lady I saw said immediately "that is my grandmother" and I really believe that is what makes it so powerful, it is all of our grandmothers, mothers and to an extend ourselves. Things have gotten much better, but we still remember, and we are not there yet, that women really have equal rights and worth as human beings (non-binary and trans people even more, not to exclude them). I think it is wonderful that songs like this are creating new narratives and help women to find words for their experiences (in the sense of hermeneutical gaps being closed). Thank you for listening!

Another great song with lots to think about again. Obviously I don’t know the sort of guys you hang around with, but it feels like you are stereotyping us all as Neanderthals who constantly try to keep women down. As with most things in life it’s not a sharply defined subject, there are extremes, but the (usually silent) majority fall into the middle ground of respecting each other and getting on with their lives. Certainly that’s the case with the vast majority of people in my life, although, obviously, there’s the caveat that anyone with those extreme views wouldn’t like me anyway!!!

@DofNE99 for the last 16 years I worked with new people about every 90 days. 100s of people who get very close to for a quick period of time and then move to the next project and do it over again. Unfortunately, the points I brought up are A lot more of a concern than it may be it most people's lives. For however big anyone's circle may be, there are a lot more people outside of that circle of people you choose to consistently put yourself around. Hopefully, that helped explain a little more where some of my stereotyping may come from. Appreciate you friend 🙏💜🧸
