You gotta see this song "Live From Long Island". Billy just put out first single in 30 yrs. "Turn the Lights Back On". Goosebumps. Saw him in 22 at Notre Dame and he was 73 and rocked a 3 hour show! His band also with him decades. So tight and play off each other perfectly. No joke, Billy is a living legend. 😎

The string orchestration on the studio recording often gets overlooked but really adds to the song, especially when listening with eyes closed and/or while wearing headphones. Perhaps it is because they do not feature during most live performances of the song.

Fell in love with this when it came out. I was in high school. Being raised as a Beatle baby and loving Queen, Bowie and more... the idea of experimental rock was (I guess) somewhat expected. What I love about Billy Joel is his classical training on the piano which is such a strong backbone to his creations. Love your reaction young man. Great to see you!

The sax player has been Billy’s musical director and backup singer his entire career
@seanscanlon90679 ай бұрын
Not trying to be a dick here but if you mean Billy's entire career, Mark Rivera is the second sax players in Billy's band and joined in 1982 after Richie Cannata who was the sax player in the band from around 1975 to 1981-82 for about four to five albums, and plays sax on the studio recording of this song from The Stranger album in 1977.

@@seanscanlon9067 You know better than me - I guess I should have referred to his prime, rather than entire career - clarification and correction is not being a dick
@iainsmith24348 ай бұрын
@@tombreeden595that also depends when you think his prime was, 73-82 were pretty prolific and fantastic years in the Billy Joel catalogue, No less or more so than 82-93 to be honest, I’ve seen Mark Rivera in concert 5 times, never had the privilege of seeing Richie Canata but I am an equal fan of his contributions!

So many of his songs are like watching a movie I your head. Out of a romantic night, remembering romances of youth and the dream high school couple that everyone admired grows up and faces reality that all the illusions of the American marriage dream were no guarantee for happiness. Now, meeting old friends from the neighborhood where you grew up while you're out on a romantic night and chatting about them, like "Hey whatever happened to so and so? Have you seen them?" Then hearing the story. Just remembering how hopeful and ignorant, but happy you had all been back then before you really knew about life, ending in acceptance and understanding and the wonderment of twists and turns ahead.
