I'm sure you know what the song is about but the couple at the table in the beginning IS Brenda and Eddie. They are getting together at their old hang out (the Italian restaurant) to reminisce about old times since even though they got a divorce the "stayed the best of friends". He's telling her about his new family and telling her how good she looks after all the years and it's so touching at the end when he says how he'll meet her anytime she wants at "their" Italian restaurant. So bittersweet and I've heard this song a million times but I never saw the video which is also a masterpiece. It confirms what I thought all along that the narrator is Eddie and the story he's telling is what they are talking about over their bottle of wine at their table by the street. A masterpiece.

@@generationgapreacts I bought The Stranger when it came out, on the strength of Just the Way You Are and Movin' Out, which were both big radio hits right out of the gate. But Billy was relatively unknown. I used to listen to the album in the bedroom of my parents at night, with headphones (past when I should've been asleep--I was a sophomore in high school), and I can perfectly recall this song carrying me away, with that outro helping me drift off. Funny, the stuff that sticks with you over the years. 🙃Still loving the channel!

I saw Billy J in the early 70s, absolutely Excellent. Like much of Billy Joel it's about his writing talent, and the rest follows. I have a vast collection of vinyl ,from the original days of release, Also a musician who plays 3 instruments, guitar, Blues Harp/ Harmonica, percussions, and a music historian. Billy Joel all though being in superstar status. He does seem to end up down lower income. Or should I quote his line, " In The Discount Rack With The Can of Pea's ". Yes and Mom should be listing to some Billy Joel. Joel does have that ability to expose the personality of people, like the" piano man" and other songs. I think this song also brings out the mundane life that most are expected to lead. As if we are supposed to be regulated by monetary goods we collect.

Love the album and this song too, but I have a different take on the latter. For me, it's not a song about Brenda and Eddie and their peak and fall but rather a song about two middle-aged friends who get together every so often to chat a bit about their current lives but mainly to reminisce about life when they were young and life was vibrant. I see the structure of the composition that way too: An invitation to meet at their favorite Italian restaurant, a quick update on how each of them is doing, a deeper dive recalling what life was like for them when they were teenagers, and an more details recall of two specific friends, Brenda and Eddie. That structure and my take on the song is why I find it so relatable. Not all of were prom kings and queens who married and divorced in the same summer (of '75), but all of us for whom our teen years is a bright bust distant memory sometimes get together with friends from our youth to reminisce, and really, to relive those times.

Growing up on Long Island, you sort of had to be a Billy Joel fan. You're right this one never got a ton of airplay as it is a long track (he complains about record labels wanting shorter songs on "The Entertainer") but it is a staple at his concerts and everybody sings along. Trivia: he had tidbits of several songs but couldn't write a full one out of any....and it became this classic when he combined them.

My absolute favorite Billy Joel song. Love the different parts, and the story. So, question: are the two people at the restaurant Brenda and Eddie, reminiscing about their old romance and failed marriage?

I always here this song as two old buddies getting together and shooting the breeze and the topic of Brenda and Eddie comes up. The video is great, but It looks more like Brenda and Eddie reuniting. I'm sure that's a possible interpretation, but not how I usually hear it. But that doesn't take away from the excellent graphics.

I wouldn't say this track's underrated. The reason you tend not to hear it on the radio is that it was never released as a single, i.e., it was never a "hit", in its own right. Among folks who enjoy entire albums rather than just the hit tunes, Scenes is held in VERY high regard.
@donw8042 жыл бұрын
Actually, this song is not underrated at all. Many (if not most) people think it is his greatest song ever... from a masterful and lengthy catalog of fantastic songs. I know I do. On a side note, a lot of people (myself included) think the final part of the song refers to a bottles of reds (sedative pills) and a bottle of whites (speed pills) depending on your mood. If you listen carefully, you'll hear the plural "s".
@generationgapreacts2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it's more appreciated than I assumed! It's one of my favorites. I'll pay close attention to the ending of the song
@88wildcat2 жыл бұрын
That's how it is written in the lyrics. What makes it tricky to hear is that at the start of the song when he sings bottle of white the second time he emphasizes the -te part of white so hard it sounds like he adds an s to it then too but the written lyrics don't reflect that.
@88wildcat2 жыл бұрын
I've never seen that video before. I wonder if it was made by the same people who did the video for The Spirit of Radio by Rush. The animation style is very similar.

Big fan of Billy Joel straight out of the gate. I used to get crap from my hippie friends who thought of Billy Joel as a commercial sellout, but I was drawn to his music and the incredible lyrics and perspectives underlying those lyrics. Here's a couple of recommendations (keeping it down to three, because there are so many great choices): -"The Entertainer", which was his response to that 'commercialism' criticism. -"Prelude/Angry Young Man", the live version he played with a broken left thumb (you can see the white bandage on his thumb). kzbin.info/www/bejne/jobTaoWririXrK8 -"Piano Man", written while waiting out the expiration of his first musical contract with people he found he couldn't trust. Your mom will get a lot of the cultural references lost on the current generation. The best version is his official video (he always made his own best illustrative videos; excellent production values): kzbin.info/www/bejne/namogYlqoNSfsJI

Whoever made the video either missed or deliberately ignored that the last verse says "a bottle of reds, a bottle of whites" -- pills, not wine. It matters for the tone.
