Another dynamic is children. We are shopping for a citizenship in a HEALTHY society - no obsession over money/credit, family structures in place, minimal social media addictions, and a government with light touch/soft freedoms....as a way to plant our kids there. So far, Colombia is winning.

No jobs over here, high unemployment and lots of homeless and junkies. Latinos, not only Colombians are super flashy and obsessed with keeping up with the joneses, people are in debt here too. Yes, the healthcare system is affordable but that’s it. If your into hiking by yourself you can’t do that in Colombia super dangerous to venture out in the trails solo or even with people. U.S. taxation is super annoying for other reasons. I have always been fully remote but a lot of companies straight say no to working abroad even fully remote because they blame the complicated taxes...so basically they are telling me I am a slave to the U.S., it is so weird to me. I work on a computer, haven't been to an office in years and years, yet, they I need manager approval, HR approval, IT approval, and then can get 10 business days to live abroad...which is why I am leaving the company for a real full remote. I speak Chinese, I have lived in Asia for years before and I am going back. Even if you have vacation, they will say a month is "Leave" so then you could do like 3 weeks, but that isn't enough time to experience since the main time and cost is the flights. Anyway, I know this is a rambly rant. All I am saying is the U.S. restrictions really does make life restrictive if you like other countries and living locally in other countries and you aren't a tourist.

It's like that because, let's face it, some people try to "play the system" to get out of paying the government what is owed. That's right, certain "savvy" people do cheat on their taxes and the authorities simply aren't havin' it. You gotta prove everything, just about. Can’t blame them.

Most countries have tax treaties with the US that each contain a 'saving clause' that gives the US exclusive rights to tax a US citizen, so that's probably not the reason (at least if your destination is a tax treaty country). More likely it's the local employment laws and taxes in the destination country that the employer just isn't interested in wrapping its policies and processes around for the benefit of a single employee (you).

Some people will never understand how annoying foreign tax is until they begin to make a lot of money outside the US. Even foreign companies might choose not to work with you because of this simply because the tax procedure is overly complex for them. Hiring a tax accountant runs you into the thousands sometimes even into the tens of thousands depending on your earnings or the nature of your work which is an additional expense and God help you if you work in multiple countries. In fact Some banks, especially in France don’t even want to deal with you because of the extra filing they have to put up with on your account, they’ll rather just deny your application due to made up reasons. And some people are surprised when you renounce. If your work is overseas the US passport is actually a harm than a good, amongst other things.

Andrew can you make RnD video about difference of US and non US tax systems. I’ve read that tax treaties between countries would not allow countries like France or Germany to do citizenship based taxation, practically impossible (they researched that and could not do because of additional legal reasons and the fact that they have to renegotiate all tax treaties with all countries in the world)
@matthewnirenberg
@matthewnirenberg 4 ай бұрын
That'd be a huge series of videos. Regarding your comments about treaties and EU countries, they could do citizenship based taxation for anyone who isn't living within the Schengen zone. Simply put, the way the Schengen zone works as far as taxation is that individuals pay tax where they have registered their residence, EU businesses pay where they are primarily located and/or where they have a significant presence (i.e. a local division). In the latter case its gets complicated as the divisions of the company generally only have to pay things related to pensions and local taxes (emissions, manufacturing, etc.). This is due to the Schengen Zone's Single Market Economy. Whilst citizenship based taxation within Schengen can't be done, it can be done to those who aren't living in the Schengen Zone. Existing tax treaties are few and far between and none of them prohibit citizenship based taxation.

Rubbish. 99% of countries won't cause you headaches unless you live there and get fully in the system, simply having the passport doesn't get you fully in the system. As someone born with multiple citizenships, the countries I'm a citizen of but haven't ever lived in are no headache. If I were to move to one of those countries, I'd have to get a tax number and then headaches would exist, currently having to only deal with one tax file is only one headache which I can legally leave when funds permit the cost of moving abroad. One does not require a tax number in order to have a passport, only a citizen number.
