Probably the easiest way to get a diplomatic passport is to give the President a million dollars for his campaign and he'll just make you an ambassador. Simple.

When I was in college a close friend of mine's dad worked as a member of the U.N. in NYC. I never asked my friend what his dad's job title was but he was extremely high up. I know this because I can remember one night at a party at his home in Connecticut, he went upstairs and brought down his dad's diplomatic passport when we started talking about how cool it must be to never get in trouble with the law/government when you have that level of status. I can tell you from actual experience not rumor or hearsay it works. That same friend was out one night with us partying in downtown Stamford, CT and he got pulled over on our ride to his house afterwards to crash. The cop knew he was drunk and was going to ask my friend to get out of the car to perform a field soberty test. Well, my friend, unbenost to me had swiped his dad's diplomatic passport. Him, being Italian, had a very similar name to his father and he wiped out that passport and until this day I've never seen a cop do a complete 360 like he did that night. The cop not only immediately ceased to uphold us at the side of the road but insisted that he provide a lead escort to my friend(thinking he was his dad) so that no other officers would interfere with our travels. Diplomatic passports do exist and I'm living proof that officers acknowledge their privilege.

So he was the son of an Italian diplomat to the UN?
@michaelgilmer38364 жыл бұрын
I did a little research and I found that there are basically two reasons a high net worth individual might want a real diplomatic passport (as opposed to a glamour one). First, visa free travel to almost all countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, etc. Almost all countries who belong to the UN are signatories to treaties that allow their legitimate diplomats to travel to other countries without first securing a visa. Now obviously there would be heightened scrutiny of diplomats from places like North Korea traveling to the USA but in most instances, a diplomat from places like St. Kitts can travel with very little government scrutiny and without border agency scrutiny. The second benefit is no worry about staying in a place like the USA for an extended time and acquiring tax residency and having to pay taxes to the host country. However, to be able to stay an extended time, a holder of a DP would need some diplomatic commission from the issuing country but those can often be quite amorphous.

I grew up in a diplomatic corps family. Diplomatic immunity isn't the automatic get out of jail, pay attention to no laws deal people imagine it is. Do something dumb enough or illegal enough and you can end up expelled, or the country from which you are from can just disavow you and leave you to your fate in whatever country you fucked up in.

Honorary consul posts are much less rare than you make it sound, and don't require much work. They do offer most diplomatic privileges but diplomatic immunity is over rated (Dad was honorary consul of a Pacific island). Diplomatic license plates on the car were probably the best part of it.

A few years ago, I met an interesting Russian man who had a house in a beautiful secluded spot south of Lima, Peru, He said he had a Ukrainian diplomatic passport (but spoke Russian, not Ukranian) and owned an arms company in Estonia. he showed me his impressive shooting range targets and said he was tired of killing people. Parked his black speedboat in the cove in front of his house.

@maverickcapitalist14 жыл бұрын
Interesting topic and would definitely be advantageous to hold this type of passport in certain situations. Good thing that woman Who fled UK was not in Russia or Belarus, dont think the situation would have been so pretty in one of those countries. It also astonishes me the contradictions in usa, a woman commmits a crime in a foreign country and the usa government does nothing but a guy owes a bit in child support and is with out a job and is sent to jail or someone owes a bit in taxes and irs is after them. I could go on but Will Just say action speaks louder then words and what you are doing andrew is proactionary on the frontend of matters which is much greater then words!

It's very normal for many countries to never extradite their own nationals. I think that was the issue with the woman who killed the bike rider, they didn't give her diplomatic status, it's just a normal procedure to never extradite your own nationals.

@Spencer Broom I read the article. She was actually a diplomat's wife so she also had immunity. I doubt that even if she didn't have any the US would extradite her to the UK, maybe because of the so called "special relationship", maybe...
