You have really come up with a great idea. My parents took the reverse route when my dad was going out to San Diego to be shipped out as a Marine to the South Pacific in WWII. It will be fun to see what they saw - and think of them taking that route. Happy Trails, Eric.

Eric I know your to young to remember but your proposed trip reminds me of an old TV series called Route 66. Two young "soldiers of fortune" set out across America on Route 66. The series aired from 1960-64 and was shot all over America. Bon voyage my friend looking forward to this adventure.

I'm happy to see you do this Historic Route 66 tour. I want to do it myself sometime. The guide book was a great tip. I think I'll try to find one on-line, and study up. I recommend you read the Wikipedia article on Route 66. I was on a deserted stretch of highway in New Mexico one day, and saw a sign indicating that this stretch of road was 'at one time' part of Route 66. I got curious, and looked it up on Wikipedia. There were some changes to the Route throughout the years. In Arizona, there is an intact section, and Oklahoma has a great nearly intact section, between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. I lived in Amarillo, TX for a few years, and the section of the Route through that city is pretty well intact, with lots of cool stuff to see. Wishing you well, and Happy Trails!

Hi, Eric. Back in 2006 there was a wildly popular show on the Food Network called, "Feasting on Asphalt", hosted by Alton Brown, one of the food network icons. Your upcoming journey reminded me of that series. Although Alton's focus was on food, he wove in local sights and stories in a most engaging way. Just as you do. Safe travels. (Alton did a follow up series, but the first was the best and most popular.)

My wife, son and I are going to be doing the same thing you are doing right now. We however have to wait for the son to get out of school. As soon as he is out of school we are going to drive from here in Grayland WA. down east OR and CA. I will be posting videos as soon as we get the inside of our Winnebago Aspect 29H looking like home. We are going to be heading for east WA. this weekend to get some sunny weather to install a new fan and some vent covers. Looks like you have a good start to your trip. I have been watching a lot of videos as of late looking just to find all I can about what I am doing and how to do it better. Sorry if I do not watch all your videos on your "Trip Down The Old Mother Road 66". I took a trip when i was younger down it but I am sure that I did not see everything. Maybe I will go back and watch them after I get down the road in June. Well this is getting long so I will finish this by saying "Safe travels".

There are a couple of nice Route 66 museums in Kingman Arizona. One is called the Powerhouse Visitor Center. The other is the Mojave Museum, which is walking distance from Powerhouse. Kingman also has a railroad museum, but it was closed when I visited. Going further east, across from the Grand Canyon Railway RV park is the Grand Canyon Brewing Company brew-pub (in Williams AZ) which is very nice inside. Big parking lot there so it's easy to park the RV. Williams is also a Route 66 tourist spot. There's an RV park in Williams which has railway cars made into motel rooms, kind of interesting to see from the outside. (Canyon Motel & RV Park). When you go through Flagstaff AZ, stop at the Lowell Observatory for a guided tour. It's up a short steep hill, but your motorhome will handle it. My 24' Class C did fine. It costs about $15 as I recall, but interesting, and it has some nice things in the gift shop. Lowell Observatory is where the planet Pluto was discovered. The telescope used for that discovery is out of service being reconditioned, but a larger telescope is on the tour, which was used to create maps of the lunar surface for NASA's first manned lunar landing and which is where astronomer Vera Rubin made her observations that lead her to conclude the existence of "dark matter". Astronomer Percival Lowell himself is entombed there in a sarcophagus under a glass dome. His widow wanted him to be able to look at the night sky in the afterlife. The museum there has Lowell's big red 1911 Stevens-Duryea Model Y "Big Six" motorcar, beautifully restored. Further east on I-40 (paralleling historic Route 66) you'll reach Winslow AZ on old Route 66, where the "standin' on the corner" park is the location of the actual corner in the song made famous by The Eagles. You too can stand on the same corner and take a selfie. There's even a flatbed Ford parked on that corner, as in the song, and the image painted on the storefront window recreates "the girl my Lord in the flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me". That's as far east on Route 66 as I got on my recent 2500 mile loop from Santa Cruz (CA) through Mojave (CA) and through Arizona, which I did over a 2-week period last month. I skipped the Meteor Crater that's about 6 miles south of I-40 between Flagstaff and Winslow. Your guide book probably tells you about it. After leaving I-40, I drove about an hour south on I-17 to Sedona AZ, the most beautiful sight on my Arizona trip, but that's off of your Route 66 path. (If you do go to Sedona, I recommend you take I-17 and continue to the Arizona-179 intersection, then double back northward on 179. This avoids a section of steep sharp switchbacks on 89-A which is the direct route from Flagstaff.) "Get your kicks on Route 6 6."

You have to stop at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, when you pass through my hometown of St. Louis. It is on Chippewa, which used to be part of Route 66. I think before Culvers opened Frozen Custard was pretty much only sold in St. Louis and Wisconsin. Try a St. Louis style pizza at IMOS if you've never had one. It uses a cheese that is only sold in St. Louis. You can also take a detour to Forest Park (where also the 1904 World's Fair was held) and go to the history museum. They have a nice Route 66 exhibit there. You can ride your bike across the old Chain of Rocks bridge. It was once part of 66 and now is used for a bike trail over the Mississippi. It was also used in the filming of the movie Escape from New York.

This will be vicarious nostalgia for me. I did as much of Old Rte 66 as I could heading east to west. My trip was a combo of 66, Diners Drive Inns & Dives and craft breweries to add to my beer glass collection. It's hokey but I liked Pops 66 Soda Ranch. And of course all the abandoned buildings.

When you get to Albuquerque, NM be aware that they are installing a rapid transit bus system most of the way through town. You might want to detour off Central Avenue (Rt 66). The construction zone is from Coors Blvd on the west side to Louisiana Blvd on the east side. Sorry. Please don't shoot the messenger. If ykou take I40 to Louisiana, then south on Louisiana to Central, you can get the east part of it.
