Eileen Smith except there is a Cantonese dub for _Mulan_. Coincidentally, it'd be the correct choice, because Mulan seems to live in a Yue region (in the south) of China, where she, her family, and her fellow troops would natively speak a Yue language e.g. Cantonese. Putonghua refers to a standardised form of Mandarin (which developed much later than the film's setting), used in mainland China (mostly in the north), and largely administered in the 20th century.

People became extra-sensitive about that kind of topic in the last decades, so I guess it just reflects the era in which those movies were made.
@Superibis.4 жыл бұрын
@@xenotypos Or it's an actual mistake from the video. Rapunzel is definitely 18, as it's specified in the movie but we have no explicit indication of Esmeralda's age... but seeing how she behaves, talks and how mature she is, she's certainly not 16 in the film ^^ Her love interest isn't Quasi, it's Phoebus, who's at least 35 (he went to war for 20 years so he can hardly be younger than that ^^), and her mentality and appearance makes me believe she's at least in her mid-twenties :)
@xenotypos4 жыл бұрын
@@Superibis. I just checked, the video probably stated that because she's 16 in the original book, and because there's no indication in the disney movie. But you're right she's probably older in that movie, after all she's not like the Esmeralda of the book (daughter of a prostitute, and not a Romani just a French person). Phoebus' age seems to be the same though (afaik), probably because that age difference wasn't seen as immoral back in the 19th century when the book was published. Everything else about him changed though, his personality is totally different in the book. Checking the wiki made me realize I really need to read that book, the story seems far more interesting than the disney version.

@LoveeAsHell7 жыл бұрын
Nope both of these fairytales was written by Charles Perrault but was reedited by the brothers Grimm after that... But originals stories are french...
@Lena-fc9ce7 жыл бұрын
LoveeAsHell Well, I guess all the answers here have a bit of truth in them. While there is a tradition of so-called "Kunstmärchen" (artificial fairy tales/ artisic fairy tales) among European writers like Hans Christian Andersen, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are folk tales that existed way before they were written down in a fixed form. Charles Perrault didn't "invent" these stories, he'd just heard them and then put his own spin on the particular version he heard. The Grimm Brothers did basically the same, although they mostly just recorded the tales they collected instead of changing them a lot. The Disney version of Cinderella (I've never read Perrault's Sleeping Beauty, so I can't speak on that) is based in large parts on Perrault's version of the story, you see elements that only show up in his version, like the ball being only one night long instead of three, or the step-sisters not really being punished, or a fairy godmother giving Cinderella a dress instead of her mother's spirit in the form of a tree/dove. So while I think it's true that these particular Disney movies are based mostly on the Perrault versions, the original stories are not French, but simply folk tales. I wouldn't even call them European, because version of the Cinderella story can be found in other cultures as well, like China and Egypt.

Honestly, even when I was little, I always got the impression that Esmeralda was older than Quasi. While you're correct in saying that most Disney heroines aren't older than their male counterpart, it's usually their love interest that they aren't older than, and in her case, that would be Phoebus, who is definitely older than her. So I would wager that she could be maybe around 25/26 or so, while Phoebus could maybe be 30/31. But then, Disney heroines being older than their love interest isn't exactly unheard of. While it's an extreme example and only happened once, Kida from Atlantis as around 8800 years on Milo lol
@Evy25268 жыл бұрын
In the book, Esmeralda was around 16 I believe. The "princesses" always look older in the movies though...
@Shmurph8 жыл бұрын
In the book, she may have been, but there are always differences between books and the movies based off of them. And while the Disney princesses always tend to look older than they're supposed to be, they at least tend to act their age to a degree, while Esmeralda both looks and acts particularly mature.
@lsaas16238 жыл бұрын
That's a valid point although I always viewed Esmerelda matured simply from her life style and experiencing persecution and hardship most of her life. Poor Quasi hasn't really had the chance to develop and socialise naturally so in some cases he comes off rather like a child e.g.utter devotion to the first person who was kind to him and the very black/white viewpoint Frollo pressed on him. And just in case you were interested, Phoebus was cited as 21 at least in the book

notsandythesquirrel I know this comment is old, but as far as we know, Esmeralda was born and raised in France. In the book, she is not even a native gypsy. She is a stolen baby and was switched as a baby with Quasimodo by Gypsies, and Esmeralda's actual mother is so horrified by Quasimodo that she abandons him, which leads Claude Frollo to adopt and take care of him. (Yep, in the book Frollo is not as awful as in the Disney version). So there's no true evidence of Esmeralda coming from any other country than France. :)

An interesting video. Congrats concerning your research. Concerning Sleeping Beauty, there is a proof that the movie takes place in France. When Aurora and Philippe appear in front of the king and the queen, the music is based on Vive Henri IV, that was the French national anthem before the Revolution, even if Henri IV lived after the XIVth century. Concerning the Little Mermaid, well, let's consider that the sea and the land are two different universes. When Eric and Ariel visit his kingdom, the vegetation when they leave the city is clearly European. And by the way, Grimsby is a Danish name (grim=ugly, by=town).

AlexMoby I agree with the differences between land and sea. Though, as a Dane, I can't agree with Grimsby being a Danish name. It certainly is true that Grimsby consists of two Danish words, but Grimsby is not in any way a usual name in Denmark, nor was it during the period of the movie.

You are totally right about the anthem, but I don't think this is why you can hear it in the end. I think it's only because Tchaikovsky used this music as the Apotheosis in the ballet Sleeping beauty. All the musics from the movie are from Tchaikovsky's sleeping beauty so I don't think it was connected with the anthem.

There are few million speakers and 7 large dialects with words originating from punjabi/persian/the speaker's current homeland + a mountain of illiteracy varying the spellings a.k.a it is as harder to learn than the english pronunciation. I tried with central Romani. I started studying hindi, persian, and polish instead. @IchibotK7 жыл бұрын
Chris Hu Cantonese would be the correct choice considering the setting in the film. Shang's camp was in the mountains of Guilin. It didn't take Mulan very long to get there on horseback, so she must live nearby. Also, on the way toward a battle site, Shang's troops pass by women as they're cultivating rice. In Ancient China, this was only done in the south. This is further evidence they were in a Yue region of China (possibly the Han province of Jiaozhou), where they'd natively speak a Yue language e.g. Cantonese.

just a quick correction at 6:42 - the french title for the hunchback of notre dame by victor hugo is notre dame de paris (whereas "le bossu de notre dame" is a direct translation of the phrase "the hunchback of notre dame"). fun fact, hugo was actually unhappy with the english translation of the name, since he meant the cathedral to be the most important part of the book, and the english title instead put the focus on quasimodo. fun fact number 2, notre dame de paris was such a huge hit in france when it was published that it basically saved notre dame from falling into disrepair! prior to it being published it was falling apart and largely unpreserved. hugo's novel renewed interest in the cathedral. architecture actually is a major theme in the novel

@matthewhedrichjr.54454 жыл бұрын
Nope, it is possibly set in Medieval England because of the accents and Jean Bob was from France, according to the story ‘Odette’s Book of Wonderful Friends: Jean Bob’. Also in ‘Odette’s Book of Wonderful Friends: Puffin’, it says in the page after the page, “He was almost home (Ireland)...” meaning, as an inference, he’s still in the British isles (somewhere in England) cause Ireland is part of the British isles, but NOT part of the UK or Great Britain. The clothing looked NOTHING like the French, it resembles more of Anglo/Medieval/Renaissance England, as well as Gothic German and Italian Renaissance . The style of the movie looks a lot like Great Britain. I have more evidence to prove that most of the characters spoke in British accents, including Rothbart. Even though Odette is a French name, Bromley is also the name of a town in London. The castle can be based on the castle in Germany and possibly some English/Scottishcastles. Btw, the forest scene reminds me of the New Forest in Hampshire.

SALL Penda Solène I know it was a Russian ballet, but the style of the movie is a bit like UK because the architecture, accents, and clothing are based off of Medieval England. It resembles the way the British and Germans wore in medieval times.

@@matthewhedrichjr.5445 I'm sorry but how does the costumes not look like a French cotte or cottehardie (in English kirtle or cottehardie... The latter doesn't change names because well, it came to England from the mainland) with bouils or fréseaux (puffed sleeves) ? I can find dozens of pictures from 13th to 15th century France with similar-looking costumes. I say France because you wrongly said that the dresses look nothing like French ones (where did you get that from ?), but these garments are staples of Western European historical fashion, including Germany, Spain, or Italy. The puffy sleeves of Odette's white dress look very much like the late middle-ages/early-Renaissance Italian style that would go on to spread and inspire the Tudor dresses. It could be said to look a lot like these 2 Italian gamurras for example : www.pinterest.es/pin/479422322822289083/ www.pinterest.es/pin/189432728057188525/ As for the accents, they don't mean anything : British English is commonly used by American studios as a lingua franca for period and Fantasy movies. Even in Beauty and the Beast, explicitly set in France, they make the clock character speak the Queen's English. TV Tropes calls this "The Queen's Latin" and describes it thus: "This trope is used in film and television fiction set in the past (or a fantasy counterpart culture heavily based on the past) where some or all characters speak with British accents, even though the film is not set in Britain and the characters are not British."
@matthewhedrichjr.54454 жыл бұрын
SALL Penda Solène the Swan Princess did not take place in France! It is vaguely medieval England because of the towns named and county like Lincolnshire and Colchester. Sleeping beauty is said to be in France while swan Princess is probably in england. Another evidence is that Bromley is an English name for a town in London. Sleeping beauty does NOT take place in England because I can picture medieval France where Eyvind Earle inspired his art from French Renaissance.

little fact about Prince of Egypt: Moses runs away from Egypt at age 40
@carstenfriis41208 жыл бұрын
Since the prince’s name in The Little Mermaid is Eric, which is a name of Old Norse origin and many Scandinavian (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) kings and princes in the past have been named Eric, he is most likely from Scandinavia. I don’t think that I’ve ever heard of a Portuguese (or any other southern European) prince/king named Eric. Given than the fairytale of “The Little Mermaid” was written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, Eric is most likely from Denmark. The movie would then most likely take place in either Denmark or the Danish West Indies. The Danish West Indies (Now: United States Virgin Islands) was a Danish colony in the Caribbean (from 1672 till 1917). It would definitely explain Sebastian’s Caribbean accent. Maybe Disney just added a Caribbean accented character, because Denmark owned a Caribbean colony during the time period in which the movie is supposed to take place. Also, Denmark has a lot of beaches.

@@lilia8545 . The name Eric is not of Latin origin. As I very clearly stated in my initial post, Eric is a name of Old Norse origin. Eric is derived from the Old Norse name Eiríkr, which means “ever ruler” or “eternal ruler”. The Old Norse name Eiríkr is a compounding of the words ei (which means "ever") and ríkr (which means "ruler"). Besides, Eric/Erik has been an extremely popular name of Scandinavian/Norse kings and princes for many centuries.

The little mermaid was originally situated in the sea surrounding the Danish island Bornholm... but the Disney version certainly would be in a warmer place ^^

It's quite warm in Denmark though. But the tropical fish, turtles, moray eels and flamingos kinda took away the Danish feel.

Yea it's definitely not set in Denmark. But hey, it could be set on and around a Danish colony in the tropical Atlantic instead.

IKR. Danish, but it both looks and sounds like it's caribbean. Steel drum music, Sebastian in the english version speaks with a Jamaican accent etc.

10:30 In a lot of websites I've visited, it says that Mulan did reveal she was a woman. She was, in fact, respected for this. Apparently, in one battle, she wore full makeup and traditional women's clothing for the time to inspire her soliders to fight.
