love that about final fight(and other capcom series as i like viewing them all in the same world just a different time periods & areas.:3) as i love the original trio, maki & especially thick diva poison and their stories in street fighter. do love street fighter has a field day making fun of 2010 just being a game with street fighter's name pasted on it especially the udon comics having kevin fight mecha akuma in a arcade game mel was playing made in ken's likeness. think a beat em up/dynasty warriors esque game(just with more characters now that they have everyone back to not be as bare.:3) of guilty gear and blazblue(the rogue like's story is that it's an alternate universe with the characters sucked into it as the original had a cosmic reset.) would be really cool to see as you play those games for their characters. think a tekken force esque spin-off would definitely work with tekken's style just with a better story than 6/more interesting characters instead of nina whose the most boring tekken character(a focus on anna williams/steve fox teaming up would be way more interesting.) do love the characters of soul calibur(taki, sophieta, cassandra, siegfried & especially ivy valentine.:3) & the stages would make for a great tekken force for it's story mode/including lloyd as it could be bigger. love snk's extras(drama cd's,4-koma,neo geo station) & with snk's new direction love to see this come back. remember that virtua quest spinoff & virtua fighter should mix with shenmue if a new game happened as it would be cool having ryo team up with the virtua fighter's. don't really think mortal kombat's stories good at all outside special intros but love the cheesy cutscenes. absolutely love kof:kyo showing so much of the king of fighters really great characters & writing that i'd really alongside a u.s release (same with rival schools school life mode.) would love the king of fighters 16 doing a mode like this/samurai showdown rpg for 16 with the characters it has now. think days of memories is so adorable letting you date snk's beautiful gals(and guys in this/it's successor kof for girls.) & would love to see it come back adding characters like alfred, especially dolores,luong,shun'ei/meitenkun,isla & darli dagger. alongside match of the millenium card fighters is my favorite of snk. vs capcom for the series used in that i'd definitely love to see in a snk vs. capcom 3(especially power stone, red earth, devil may cry and twinkle star sprites.). prefer pocket fighter over super gem fighter(do wish devilotte had been in pocket fighter.) though enjoyed it on capcom fighting collection enough especially the intermissions. actually heard more about neo geo ultimate shooter than kof sky stage but was always interested in it especially the branching paths & iroha as she's so adorable. love to try out cannon spike as i love the idea of cammy leading a team of capcom characters(that teppen actually brought back having them take on sigma.) in a shooter that could include the dolls/chun li and others. really would love another try at street fighter 2 movie game as the animated movie(favorite video game adaptation period.:3) would with it's fights & unique locations make a great fighting game playing in moments and like the good ending having the cyborg get a heart from seeing ryu's bond with ken that he kills m. bison for good.

Maybe that would be interesting to focus rather than actual fgs, that lately have been getting more criticism and controversies than before. Shaolin Monks showed the amount of potential that the franchise has in other genres. And if that direction is combined with the elaborate story modes (that almost feel like a waste of resources and energy in MK11 and MK1) i believe the result could be more interesting for the public and even commercially. The fact is that high standards and competitively solid fgs are extremely challenging to make.

DOA fanboy here: To answer your question, DOAX's canonicity can be described as "MOSTLY non-canon"; afaik, the only game to have direct ties to the main series is the first one, which took place between DOA3 and DOA4. It was also the first appearance of Lisa/La Mariposa, which I'd imagine made her ending in DOA4 where she's unmasked a bit of a cool reveal at the time. Other than that, Xtreme and the main series are heavily disconnected. Only other thing of note imo is that some dialogue from Tina in Venus Vacation implied that if the game were canon, it'd have to be placed after 6 since she mentions the wrestling team she started with Bass during the game's story.

With Mighty Final Fight, IIRC more than low sales, it was that it was a very low production run since it was one of the last games for the NES, in those days the last games suffered from that because most of the consumer base was assumed as migrated to the following generation, and if you check usually those late games in a console lifecycle are the ones that end up fetching super high prices nowadays for that reason, as I'm pretty sure you're familiar with a few of those games xD. I had no idea about the comprehensive details of the 96 Neo Geo Collection encyclopedia, I'll definitely need to take a look at that sometime soon!

I really liked your take on The King of Fighters Kyo. For fans of the Orochi Saga, it's a real treat to interact with the KOF cast and get to see their voice actors expand on their characters. The newer sagas could definitely use some spin-off games like this one. As for SNK/ADK's quiz games, the idea sounds good on paper, but it's a shame the questions are all about late 80's/early 90's Japanese pop culture. It's always interesting to see how fighting game characters work so well in different settings - and most of all, companies were more eager to experiment back then.

Now this is definitely a topic that is way more interesting than it would seem at first due to how weird studios get sometimes, it's always neat to see whatever spinoff comes out and seeing what genre it is, as for any I know about, the only one I can remember right now is that BlazBlue beat-em-up on the 3DS, Blazbloo Clonephantasma I think it was called, (I don't remember the exact spelling) and I only know about it thanks to Thorgi lol, although there is something I do want to give an honorable mention too, the Batman Forever tie-in game for the SNES and Genesis, it sort of a Sub Zero MK Mythologies situation where it has fighting game controls but it's a platformer, it even has a VS mode so it has a one up on Sub Zero, don't remember if it was an exclusive to one of those two versions though. 32:39 That face is so good. "Yeah, I c06kblocked ya mortal, what are ya gonna do about it?" (Would've also been here yesterday but was on a trip lol) Edit: Also about Dynasty Warriors, So the games in Japan are named roughly, "Shin Dynasty Muso" (Or something like that, I don't remember exactly) however the OG PS1 fighting game is named exactly the same, but it doesn't have "Shin" at the start, and considering the games are one number behind us in Japan as well, (I.e Dynasty Warriors 3 here is DW2 over there, DW4 here is DW3 there, so on and so forth) and the anniversary video for the series didn't mention the PS1 fighter, I think the DW games and the PS1 game are meant to be completely different but also kind of the same series? I don't know it's weird.

FINALLY! A youtuber that seems to have actually _played_ Final Fight Streetwise instead of just crapping on it and parroting some opinion they heard elsewhere. I mean, don't get me wrong, the gritty "gangsta" style reboot *is terrible* but it's only an aesthetic choice; you're totally right in that the game plays well and the Arcade Mode is a big highlight (as is the more "grounded" design for Mike Haggar imo; Streetwise's version is basically Dan Severn, who's legit badass and MMA legend so I love his model in this game, lol). I never knew Cammy was in the main game though, since I spent all my time playing Arcade, lol! Gotta fire up my OG Xbox and give it another shot. Y'know, fun fact: apparently Capcom Studio 8 was working on a more traditional FF game before the call came in to make it more gritty - this "prototype" for the game that would eventually change INTO Streetwise, "Final Fight Seven Sons," actually looks pretty similar to the Arcade Mode in the final game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmiTfpmparWmjNU At any rate, loved this topic! You did *such* a good job - this is a great companion to GuileWinQuote's "Vs Modes in NON Fighting Games" video, which I also loved. This is such a rich & fascinating area to mine for content since fighting games and spinoffs or weird modes go hand-in-hand. With so much lore and so many fleshed-out characters, it's no WONDER they try to explore it in weird ways (personally, I'm always fascinated by action-adventure and RPG modes in fighting games. Stuff like Tobal and Tobal 2's dungeons, or the main adventure mode in TamSoft's weird lil' Power Stone looking Abalaburn. Street Fighter 6's World Tour *made me so happy,* lol). I learned of a bunch here, but if you're looking for a few more for the future, I know Atlus' Power Instinct/Goketsuji Ichizoku series has an isometric run 'n' gun game for the Saturn called Purikura Daisakusen ("Pretty Kurara Legend" I think), revolving around a popular magical girl character in the roster named Kurara. I also know of Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds, a fun beat 'em up with a Mighty Final Fight-looking chibi art style that's a spinoff of the Phantom Breaker fighters like Omnia. That's all i can think of though. This video was great!

While not spin-offs per-se, so they might not count for this video as you said, there are two other examples that come to mind I'd like to mention. The first is weirdly "Hello Kitty & Apron of Magic: Rhythm Cooking" on the 3DS. For whatever reason, it has a couple "Arcana Heart" characters in it. Well, the face of the series, Heart Aino, canonically does help her family run a bakery so it's not completely random but still. The other is an SRPG called "Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos" on the PSP. Being a crossover game, there are multiple series involved and a bunch of them just happen to be fighters. Mai from "King of Fighters", Iroha, Mina, and Cham Cham from "Samurai Showdown", Dizzy from "Guilty Gear", Noel from "Blazblue", Lily from "Tekken", and Ivy from "Soul Calibur" are all in it. Though I should note that due to the source materials, "Queen's Blade" and the "Queen's Gate" battle books, the game is sexually heavy as a result. But despite that, it's actually a legitimately good SRPG with some really cool attack animations. Of course since it's developed by the "Super Robot Taisen" devs, just on a smaller budget. Besides those, "Blazblue" and "Guilty Gear" both had a bunch more spin-offs, like "BlayzBloo" on the DSi and "GG Dust Strikers" on DS. Though those are still kinda-sorta fighters so I guess they might not count. Really seems like ASW had been trying to branch out from fighting games around that time. Unfortunately for them, to little success. Like, more recently, what the heck was "Code Shifter" supposed to be? 37:48 (Blazblue: Entropy Effect") That seems to be the general consensus. It's largely a "Blazblue" game in name only. Some characters show up but that's it. The story and setting are basically entirely disconnected. Heck, apparently the game originally wasn't even supposed to be "Blazblue" related, but instead got retrofitted into being one once ASW gave the developers access to the license. 1:11:14 ("Lilithrottle") Wow, now that's an obscure pick. It's technically not an official product since it's a doujin game which is in that grey fan-game area but still, it's a fun little title to have in your pocket to bring out. I remember trying to play this for a good while back in the day but I was new to the whole emulation/ROM ripping stuff so I couldn't get it running.

I really enjoyed The Rhythm of Fighters. Unfortunately it's yet another game dependent on a server which no longer runs due to the server shutting down. I hope I can somehow play it again one day (Switch rerelease?)

Loved Canon Spike. Probably the first spin-off (of anything) game I played actually🤔 Ok maybe Dr, Mario or Pokemon Snap, but CS was the first completely out-of-element spin-off for me lol.

I've played Guilty Gear Tangent for myself, and it's definitely one fever dream of a platformer. It's very slippery to control (much like running in a bathhouse) and grabbing more collectibles in stages determines how many lives you'll start out with per level, at least until new game+, where collectibles just become an object for 100%. You WILL need those extra lives lol.

One that's amazing (I'm heavily biased here) is the "disc 2" of Project Justice/Rival Schools 2, it's sort of a board game with a bunch of mini games that lets you create a character and use it in-game afterwards. Although I couldn't read japanese (still can't) it hugely influenced me as a tween

There is actually a bit of progress on the english translation for KoF Kyo done, the person that did the Spanish translation did the hard part already which in simple terms is extracting the script and reinjecting the translation. The problem is they dipped from the internet entirely before giving anyone the extracted script or any of the workflow for reinjecting it (a lot of times it needs to be done on a game by game basis for PSX and Saturn) 🙃

I finished both XBlaze: Code Embryo and Lost Memories. They take place in another dimension because some things sound familiar while others don't at the same time. They have multiple endings and nice characters imo. Both are supposed to be prequels, the first game follows a new story with new characters while the second centers itself around a character from the mainline series. I'm a big BlazBlue fan, and I truly believe that they are worth a try for anyone who likes BlazBlue, its characters and themes.

Regarding the canon status of Guilty Gear spin-offs & what it considers canon... its very weird. Easiest way to understand this mess is that there is 3 tiers of canon, mainline games, the X-XX games (officially "Accent Series" at least on the description of GGX on guiltygearx website) & spin-offs (clearly shown on the guiltygearx website in a separate section). Mainline: Guilty Gear (1998) (sometimes subtitled The Missing Link in the game & on merch), Guilty Gear 2, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator & Guilty Gear Strive (IV in Strive is highlighted, so its Guilty Gear 4). Accent Series: Guilty Gear X, Guilty Gear XX, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (yes XXAC is officially separate, as it has a completely different story mode added in the Plus update). Spin-Offs: Rest of the games. The way these games are treated is that Mainline stuff is the actual story, The Accent Series games are additional side games that add lore to the world & characters, but also the Accent Series has been retconed to hell & back so the canon stuff you have to pick & choose. Then finally the Spin-Offs are mostly very disconnected side games, but are there if you want more Jam lore or something, soooo ultimately they dont really matter, EXCEPT THE PACHINKO MACHINE Guilty Gear XT Vastedge which is a prequel to Xrd Sign (XT was the pre-release name for Xrd, both being shortenings of "X Third"). Speaking of Xrd, if you want to make sense of the name the X part comes from the gameplay being an evolution of The Accent Series, but the story is a sequel to the story of GG2 so GG3. Dont ask why the story is split into 2 different games that both form the 3rd chapter of the story, Daisuke got funky with that game. They were not cooking with these, plz just use numbers ArcSys. Also lets not even get into the books, manga, audio dramas or FUCKING CALENDARS (not joking, a Strive calender has unique lore relating to the stages)

A pachinko machine having GG lore seems very on brand to the series to me 😂 For some reason GG having three tiers of cannon intrests me even more to finally deep dive this lore
