If the staff are not in the office we can presume that no young people are being trained to do these jobs in the future, no ? How can we help the youngsters if there is nobody in the office ? If office desks are empty the boss should assume they have left and promptly put their p45s in the post.

The civil service needs a complete overhaul. Way back in Blair’s government the then home secretary John Reid said the Home Office was not fit for purpose yet here we are 30plus years later and nothing has changed they just got worse! All the other departments are just as bad. The wage bill is out of control and the productivity is down the pan.

Are these “civil service” jobs even required? Lets face it, if they have time to walk their dog, do shopping, do housework etc and work from home at the same time then they’re not doing their jobs properly, and they clearly aren’t productive.

Some jobs are suited for working from home, some not, others will benefit by increased productivity, some not. Overall figures increase as that balance changes. No one is going to return to the office when the Tories put up train fares and the labour wants to put them up even further...a complete disaster when they should be reduced by 30% How are local authorities and hospitals going to get blind severely disabled persons to hospital and services when disability benefits have not been put up to reflect this tax on passengers? The law requires a equivalent benefits rise to pay for essential travel for severely disabled groups, which by law are required to travel paid for by government. Great efficiency savings are now required to be made as this is not an exclusive private transport system for the rich, its a mass transit system to create growth in the economy Clearly driverless trains should now be brought in and increases in disability for the blind and severely disabled UK citizens only of 25% as assessed in law..
@BP-of5cp2 сағат бұрын
Exactly! I'm perfectly happy going twice a week and still spend more money traveling those 2 days than what I spent 5 years ago going 5 days in the office. No thanks! It's cheaper to fly London-Dublin than to take a train from central London to the outskirts or surrounding towns.

I have worked for government and in the private sector and for myself at various times in my life. Currently I am back working for government again. Productivity has fallen for a fairly simple reason. There has been a big increase in numbers of civil servants but output has not. There is a complex set of reasons and only one of them is WFH. Part of it is poor management, increased bureacracy and far too many meeting which leads to wasted effort. Also very slow decision making by ministers and redoing work that has already been done.

There have always people that have WFH. Most private companies have brought people back to the office. Most of the civil service was not working before WFH? You are interviewing someone who left his job in the civil service 30 years ago to be full time employed by the union?
@PhilipHughes-wp3vm8 сағат бұрын
Well Mr General Secretary of the FDA Union, whatever that stands for ? Here's a little nugge t for you, if there wasn't a private sector who PAY taxes, there wouldn't be a Public one. BTW, I note your Scottish twang. How's dreamland in Scotland going right now? Down the pan is the answer.

Julia, did you just say, 'the home of common sense'? You all must have a jolly good laugh when the cameras are off. Let's also remember that it was Thatcher and the gang that told us that privatising things was good. The private sector ensures competition and innovation. Remember all that? If we nationalise things, Julia, we'll all be communists before we know it. I suspect the objective here isn't to make sense at all. It's just to keep bleating on about how awful everything is.
